Age of Empires online lấy bối cảnh đất nước Hy Lạp cổ xưa trù phú, miền đất của lẽ phải, tình yêu và chiến tranh. Tham gia trò chơi, game thủ sẽ xây dựng và lãnh đạo Hy Lạp đấu tranh chống lại những kẻ xâm lược.

Là phiên bản online nên game sẽ có thời gian chiến đấu thực, một xã hội trực tuyến, nơi người chơi có thể trao đổi, mua bán, hỗ trợ và giao đấu với nhau.

Game có hai chế độ chơi PvP và Co-op. Game thủ sẽ nhận được điểm kinh nghiệm khi chiến thắng trong những trận đấu PvP hay khi hoàn thành nhiệm vụ. Có những nhiệm vụ đòi hỏi người chơi phải liên kết với đồng minh mới có thể hoàn thành.

Age of Empires Online có sự tham gia phát triển của hãng Robot Entertainment nên hình ảnh trong game mang một phong cách hoàn toàn mới mẻ. Chiến binh, nhà cửa, người dân... đều mang dáng dấp hoạt hình khá "dễ thương".

Game đòi hỏi cấu hình máy tính khá "bình dân", thấp nhất là: CPU 2 GHz, VGA 128 MB và RAM 1 GB. Game có thể chơi trên nền Windows XP (only SP3), Windows Vista hoặc Windows 7.
