1) Basic information.
Awaken is a mod for FT:BoS. It uses its engine but includes completely new storyline. It is based on Fallout 1 and offers about 30 hours of play in Fallout world. It is done by fans and for fans (didn't I heard that somewhere?) and it is freeware. At the beginning there was only Polish version planed, but we are working on English one.
a) Minimum requirements:
Installed FT:BoS (version 1.27 or higher).
Generally speaking if FT works on your machine Awaken mod will also do. But to be exact you need at least::
- Pentium II 300 Mhz processor (or similar)
- 128 RAM
- Windows 9x/2000/Me with DirectX 7.0 or higher (8.0a recommended)
- Minimum 2MB Video RAM (recommended
- DirectX compatible sound card
HDD - 1MB on drive C: and about 150 on FT:BoS drive
b) Installation:
Unpack fileAwaken.rar to directory where you have FT:BoS installed (default is: C:\Program files\14 Degrees East\Fallout Tactics\). Unpack file atxt.rar directly on your C:\ drive (C:\atxt).
2) Story line.
War, war, never changes...
Great news about Masters army defeat and mutants base destruction reach far north. People rise up in arms to fight and finally burn out the evil and all freaks from their land. Well, that was almost 30 years ago and nowadays nobody remembers slaughter of those warriors. Without help from Brotherhood they were mostly killed or imprisoned by mutant armies. Life goes on... Now new evil appears. Endangered ghouls decided to build up their own army that leaded by unknown leader would set a new order, new world where humans will become ghoul's slaves. People do not remain passive. Besides the Brotherhood of Steel new organization arise: Soldiers of Hope.
Story: Game starts on 1st of January 2191. You are an inhabitant of the underground vault - Vault 32. Every thing goes ok until now. Few days ago the central computer informs the vault overseer that time has come and the vault door will now open. Residents of vault were now obliged to leave it. But Overseer doesn't tell anybody about that (except of a few trustworthy) and from time to time he sends out a scouts: "volunteers" randomly chosen by a computer. They were supposed to find a save place where they could use a G.E.C.K. and start settlement. Unfortunately no one of those "volunteers" returns. And even worse: you are the next one.
3) Game, hero & innovation.
To start the mod you have to make a new shortcut to your BOS.exe file. When you do this right-click on it and select "Properties." Under the "Shortcut" tab add -path Awaken to the end of text in the Target textbox.
To play Awaken after launching the game select: Single Player -> Awaken -> Awaken Campaign. Next you must go through standard procedure of your character creation. Of course you can select one of the prefabs or make your own unique hero.
It is recommended to play a tutorial before. This lets you acquaint with all those innovations (i.e. "speeches", multi-solution quests, etc.). Training mission is in :Single Player -> Training -> Awaken.
You start the game inside of vault 32. There you will have a chance to complete a few simple quests. Your equipment is standard 10mm pistol and Vault Suit (armor). Of course your inventory depends on your character profile. After speaking with the vault Overseer the main door will open and you will leave the vault.
As the vault location will be not visible on the map there will be no way back to the vault. Speaking about the map and locations. World map is a well-known north US territory. Game takes place mostly in its southeast regions.
There are three types of locations (strictly technical issue as there is no visible difference for player): 1) cities/villages, 2) special locations (like ghost farm or SAD in F2) and 3) bases (vaults, BoS camps, etc). We assume that in full version there will be about 15-20 locations. Random encounters - they allow you to meet old F1/F2 enemies (not as rare as in F1 however not as often as in F2).
Special random encounters - a.k.a. Easter Eggs - there is about 10-15 SRE planned. A few of the will be known to you (a beer truck or car seller) and some of them completely new (these are kept in secret :->).
Innovations - understood as fundamental difference from FT:BoS. These are:
a) Speeches
- the texts that are told to you by a NPC depends on your character CHarisma and INTelligence. Additionally when you talk for example to an engineer game will perform checks on your INT and repair skill. Only if NPC consider you skilled enough to help him he will ask you to do some work or so. Also when you talk to some evil character game will check your CH and e.g. melee. Only if he/she will consider you formidable you will manage to scare or convince him (her?).
b) Quests
- these are the quest from wide range of types of tasks you know from F1/F2 or any other cRPG/RPG. There are no kill-them-all quests as they were in FT:BoS. There is (always?) more then one way to solve the quest. Sometimes it's deferent for good and deferent for evil PC (e.g. you can chose sides of conflict: riders or villagers). And sometimes there is more then one solution even for the same type of character.
c) Multiplayer
- we have plans to add multiplayer support in later stage (to specify: two players cooperative).
4) Technical stuff.
As you can read from FT:BoS manual game will work in 32bit color with full antialiasing in up to 1024/768 resolution. There will be just a few new sprites and tiles; mostly we used standard ones.
While designing we try to base on F1/F2 settings but to add a bit of realism we increase weapon damage to 200% of base value and inventory weight to 300% of base value (Forget about running with Vindicators and 2000 ammo. Sorry, but no!
Bottle caps are valid currency in game. Of course money have they own weight, so you will not carry a lot. However prices are rather low - for 400 bottle caps you can buy 10mm pistol.
Most important things (and most valuable) are: fuel, uranium, ammo, medicines (especially Rad-X and RadAway) and books.
Game has three difficulty levels: easy, normal (recommended), hard and insane. There is no Tough Guy mode as there is no special place to save game (like BoS base was in standard FT).
Of course you can play in both: real time and turn based mode. But if you prefer real time you must remember that the game was not designed for that - we recommend TB mode (as it was in F1 or F2).
5) Enemies.

The Mod isn't any form of Fallout 3, or any kind of competition for Polish Wasteland, it isn't an Data disk to F1/2. It's just a mod for FT:BoS, which is made by fans of the Fallout series, disappointed by the lack of Fallout 3. Awaken is a single player Mod with it's own storyline and locations.
