Starting March 3, gamers in Vietnam might be forced to get a bit more sleep -- a government ministry has asked internet service providers to block access to all online games between the hours of 10 PM and 8 AM.
According to a report in Viet Nam News, the Ministry of Information and Communication is concerned about the impact of online activity on the nation, particularly when it comes to young people and online games.
The government group will be monitoring online game activities during the prohibited hours and could cancel services that allow people to play, according to the ministry's Deputy Minister, Le Nam Thang.
Service providers argue that the access block is unfair to their customers who've paid for access to entertainment, and also have argued that it makes the maintenance of online games more difficult for the region's operators.
The report pegs Vietnam's number of internet users at about 23 million, or 23 percent of the total population. Southeast Asia in general is a hotbed for MMO growth; Pearl Research has projected that the Vietnamese and Indian online gaming populations together will reach 25 million by 2014.
Research firm Niko Partners also recently forecast that Southeast Asia's online games market revenues could more than double from an estimated $405.7 million in 2010 to $833.7 million by 2014.

Guido Franco nói:Sorry, I wanted to make a serious comment about this but all I can think of are bad jokes about the vietnamese government investing in the porn industry, how labor force will be reduced by 50% for all the MMO gamers changing schedule, and so on.
But seriously though: I could understand in a socialist country if it where from 08:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs but the opposite doesn't make much sense. Then again we don't have all the statistics and data they gather from their ISP's.
John Nate nói:vietnam is a communist country..
the opinions of the people is nothing....
not sure if you know.. but facebook is blocked in vietnam (or i was told).. apparently. they afraid the spread of democracy via facebook...
it's been 10 yrs since i last visited the country.. and eh.. it didn't change much... except now it's more cram up
if it started to rained?? get to high ground!! because you will be standing in your own crap as the escape drains can't handle all the water....
Chris OKeefe nói:Does nobody in Vietnam work a night shift?
Man I'd be pissed if I was a nightshift worker in Vietnam that liked to play online on my off days. What, the only time you're allowed to play is during the same period you normally sleep?
It's up to the parents to provide structure for their kids. And it's up to the individual adult to decide what is an appropriate time to stop playing. Not everyone keeps the same schedule. This should be a no brainer.
Zachary Hoefler nói:Interesting. While I understand the sentiment, 10PM seems... pretty early. Likewise, 8am can be kind of late - I know a few people who like to log on and check their auctions/etc. before work.
In my opinion, midnight to 6am would've been more reasonable if they really insisted on this policy
Samuel Batista nói:A responsible government? What madness is this?
Seriously though, I'm all for freedom of doing whatever you want to do, but I support this radical action. Young kids and teens are the ones likely to be most affected by this sanction, and if parents cannot be trusted to moderate and control how their kids spend their time, especially into the wee hours of the morning, then I'm not one bit opposed to the government stepping in and imposing this kind of regulation. If anything, I congratulate them for doing something unthinkable from a western governments point of view: "targeted" restrictions of internet access to the overall improvement of the health of the nation's youth.
I think this has the potential to evolve and become something very positive especially from the perspective of parents, but I'm curious to see how the Vietnamese will receive the news... I'm pretty sure it'll anger plenty of young adults that have nothing better to do, but the solution for that isn't complicated. Just demand all MMO companies to introduce comprehensive parental controls on account creation.
Cody Scott nói:The problem is though that it doesnt seem the government has asked the parents if this is a problem or not. They are just doing it. also how many children can really afford to play a mmo, especially children in a country like Vietnam. I think this is their government grabbing control of something because its a mean of communication that i dont think they can easily watch.
Unique VN nói:It seem you think that this new law will help parents in raising their kids. From my experience a lot of parents will think it's better to have their kid playing games instead of doing other things. When their kids playing game, they don't need to spend a lot of time with them. I think those parents worry more about the game's content then the time(that's why they have that funny skeleton-with-muscle in Chinesse WOW). Remind you that VN goverments did try to discourage people from playing MMO before: http://playnoevil.com/serendipity/index.php?/archives/476-Vietnam-joins-C hina-an

I also think the period 10pm-8am is really wrong. For a kid, normally he will need to finish his homework before he can play game. With this new law, should he play the game and then start working on the homework at 10pm? For the people with job, they can only play a little of time instead of playing until 12pm.
Also it's not easy to implement a parental controls on account creation in those MMO. A major part of MMO games in VN are free-to-play games (with exception of 1 or 2 subscribed games). You don't need to provide bank account info or something like that in order to play.
IMO the goverment should not try to force the ban like this. I think people will spend less time in the game if there're other interesting things to do which are lacking in VN.
