Let's me compile a list of reasons why Sonly has been losing ground in Japan lately for anons to understand the situation
>2016 SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) is established in the US
>Since 2017 rumors have been circling on forum in Japan that SIE has been interfering with small Japanese indie developer about censorship
>In 2018 all of this rumors are confirmed. There have been a development at Sony. Before the establishment of SIE, every year Sony would have a few showcase of indie games to put indie and small developer in the spotlight. After SIE establishment, the gajin Jim Ryan has said that he thinks it's not wise to show case these indie anymore as it doesn't fit the Sony brand.
>It's not just the showcase, it is support in general, indie devs come out in drove to speak up about their treatment
>Sony charges Indie devs for dev kit and putting games in the store, however devs do not have any function to decorate their game outside of the cover. They can't set sale without asking for the western SIE permission. They can't advertise because of Sony anti-indie policy. This causes NiS to go to Nintendo in 2018 despite their Sony loyalty
>Indie devs received no support and led to a lot of rumors ever since 2018. Even Japanese indie games on Steam and Xbox received support from the gajin Steam and Microsoft, Sony doesn't provide any support at all I you are indie. There are even rumors that an indie devs received a support email from Sony by a westerner who responded in English telling the devs to write in English if they want support. This causes a lot of outrage in small community and makes the round on various image board. Though this may be the actions of a rogue employee
>Tbc
>2018 continues, a devs revealed the internal Sony policy about censorship. A Japanese devs who wants to release a Japanese game in Japan has to first send a sample to western SIE for approval before being allowed to release a game. This causes some controversy about Japanese devs being western slave dog who need Western permission to release game in their own country even though Sony is a Japanese company
>Japanese devs organise a broadcast against Sony on Hachima revealing that most of the rumors are true, Sony told them to write in English only if they want support
>2019 rolls around the gajin Jim Ryan becomes CEO of SIE, in charge of all Sony games
>Lots of layoff, as well as contract that was not renewed from beloved devs of Gravity Rush, Bloodborne, Silent Hill etc
>Japan Studio faces massive lay off, employee told reporter that their team is now 1/3 of what they used to be. (It seems 2021 closing of Japan Studio is a long time coming)
>Facing criticism from ignoring Japanese, an American and an European respond that they were not ignoring Japanese people. However both of them are American and European and spoke in interview in English to English news source that was later translated back to Japanese
>June 2020, The Last of Us 2 released, causing a wave of "Sony Hypocrisy" hashtags to be flying in Asian and Japanese sphere of influence. This is due to the graphics nature of TLOU2 being released uncensored while Japanese devs are scrutinized more closely when releasing their game. This causes Sony to receive criticism about discriminating against Japanese
>However it was revealed that most of the hash tag came from South East Asia, Taiwan and West Taiwan so it settled somewhat in Japan
>PS5 was released
>It was extremely difficult to get a PS5 in Japan. Sony has supply issues, however the average Japanese don't care, they just know they can't get a PS5 without paying a high cost to scalper
>Sony changes the new controller scheme in Japan to fit western sensibility. In Japan, O is okay or Yes, while X is no. However it's completely different in the west. Sony now forces Japanese gamers to comply with the west by changing their familiar layout that has been used for nearly decades that could have been fixed with a simple change in setting
>Rumors about a Sony games trailer being released in Japan with English voice acting and English or Chinese subtitles. There are no Japanese subtitles for something released in Japan. The Chinese subtitles causes Japanese gamers to flip. However this was a small issue because they shortly add subtitles after the controversy. I don't even remember what game it was because of how short-lived the controversy is
>2021
>Sony censors DMC
>Sony censors a Dragonball game to remove all appearance of blood citing "different time", literally "it's the current time". There are talk of censoring blood from Naruto games too but I don't know what happened with that. However like the erotic censorship, the censors don't apply to Western game while Japanese game that was a Shounen adaptation can't even show blood
>Jim Ryan again has an English interview stating SIE isn't neglecting Japan.
>Continuous shortage of PS5
Did you know that lately Konami is taking up a niche that Sony has been ignoring in Japan ever since SIE establishment, publisher for indie games? Using the sentiment that Sony is ignoring indies game dev, Komoney made a lot of money as the handler for indie devs, providing them with support as well as contract negotiations power when they want to publish. For example, when an indie devs wants to publish a game on Nintendo switch or PS5 and is afraid of handling contract as well as setting advertisement and sales (as Sony almost banned advertisement of indie games and sale. Even then you have to do a lot of negotiations with westerner who hate you), they sent it to Konami, and Konami will deal with the contract negotiations with Nintendo, Sony or other. They have become third biggest indies publisher in Japan thank to that
