Must say, as soon as you get fire slap and a +4 staff it's all good. Fire Ball is nice, it's a jlvl 10 spell that I was just able to get. There is another spell I have the ability to get, but I dont think I want it. Its called Dark Arrows and it has -45 m.atk, wtf? Maybe a typo, but I'm not sure. Also want to try Aqua staff, it's supposed to give MP for damage done while using physical attack on a mob with a staff. Sounds interesting.
Normall when I hunt I just use a soul chip and fire slap a mob to death. When I get low on HP I use a soul chip and then use life reach(think it's supposed to be life leech) I usually do about 500 damage with that, and get about 200hp back. Really nice, but it costs 84 or 93 mana, not sure which. Right now I'm just trying to get quests done, but it's going kind of slow.
Yes, it seems like for PvM Dark Magician is best. Not sure about the other race's mage class, but I simply own mobs.
Only thing I'm not too happy with is the lack of damage against players in PvP. The other day I was in Horaizen and a melee decided he wanted to try to pk me. While I ended up killing him, it was only after using hp pots and mp pots and running around. In the end I asked what level he was and he said he was level 12, and at the time I was level 19. Right now, at level 21, I have roughly 530hp and almost 1,000 mana. For right now I'm testing other class/races to see if there are any others I like. I'll probably try Deva mage and Gaia mage...see which I like best out of all the mage classes.
-edit- might as well give you guys my damage outputs against mobs.
So far I have fire slap lvl 3, Fire ball level 3, Life Reach lvl 3, and aqua staff level 4+1.
Using a soul chip rank 2:
Fire Slap avg 400-450, crit 850-900
Fire ball avg 560-600, crit 1000-1060
Life Reach avg 700'ish Hp 300-350 back, crit highest was 1400'ish
Using force chip rank 1:
Aqua Staff gives about 40-50mp each hit, would be higher if I used rank 2.
Lemme share my opinion, i'm lvl 27 DM and here is my jp distribution:
Fire Slap 3 = but i keep fire slap lvl 1 in my action slot (to save mp)
Fire Ball 8 = yep, its a fireball lvl 8 o.O, deal huge damage up to 1300 if u r using soul chip lvl 2, but very long casting time (4 sec ) >.>
Flame Burn 1 = damage over time, 40-70 each second and 400-500 initial damage on lvl 28ish monster. It is sux..
Life Reech 5 = this skill helps alot!! deal up to 1000 damage with lvl 2 chip and heal 450hp.
Aqua Staff 5 = well, u wont hit with stick will ya? >.>
Watery Sould 1 = it says that it reduce mp usage while u maintain this buff active. But i dun see the effect really
Darkness Saver 1 = reduce threat caused by ur attack spell, it should help alot, but lvl 1 of this spell only reduce 4 threat while ur fireball can cause up to 150 threat.
Nightmare 1 = u wont regret put 1 on this spell, it saved my life hundreds time ^ ^

I have to get fireball 1, aqua staff 1 and life leech up to level 3, then darkness arrow level 1. And all the passives up to level 3. I've got a lot of quests queued to do to gather enough jp for all this.
I am thinking that the way to go is to make a fire mage. The energy beat spells does huge damage, it is long range, but its casting time is just not worth the trouble. It probably lowers as much as 2s or even 1s and it would cause a huge damage by then, but it is gonna be hard as hell to level it and it doesn't seem to progress to any other spell, unlike the fire and shade spells do.
