Y2K was a panic that nearly-universal poor software design would fail to the point of causing a nuclear apocalypse. Some people adopted/renounced religions, made rash decisions about their worldly assets, and feared for the survival of modern society.

This is not that. This isn't even 2007 Recession levels of bad. This is maybe "GTX 970 has 3.5GB" level of bad; noticed only by enthusiasts, and likely to become nothing more than a meme in the long run. Maybe a class-action suit in the USA, but lawyers will probably make more money than any customer, and any payout from Intel even smaller than the perceived loss by the companies that are most-heavily impacted. Pretty sure Intel still hasn't settled all of their AMD antitrust-related suits, and they don't seem worse for wear from that.

Make no mistake, this is a rather embarrassing mistake on Intel's part, and having a wider impact than most vulnerabilities because Intel's core design has been rather stagnant for the past several generations. The fact that rough fixes are being worked out as soon as the issue came to light, before they have time to smooth over the worst of the performance hitches shows how seriously the experts are taking this issue. So there definitely is something serious to be fixed, but life/the economy/society/Intel/companies using Intel will go on just fine.

AMD will probably win over a few more enterprise customers with this slight to Intel's perceived reliability. But AMD is already in the middle of clawing back market share with their new product line, so the impact of one event like this will probably be lost in the bigger trend. Intel's stock will probably take a dip (because stocks always respond to panic), but odds are it will recover and then some as soon as they announce their next generation.

Except there are two attacks, Meltdown (Intel only) and Spectre (which also affects AMD and ARM), so basically, every single device manufactured in the last 20 or so years is fucked.

The kicker is that the first one is fixable via software patch, while there's no fix whatsoever for the other.

Có 2 lỗi.
1. Meltdown: đây là lỗi leak kernel, lỗi này làm cho bất kỳ 1 process nào chạy, ở bất kỳ privilege cũng có thể đọc/ghi vào kernel từ đó chiếm quyền hệ thống. Lỗi này ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến Intel, AMD khẳng định không bị ảnh hưởng. Bản patch bằng phần mềm sẽ làm giảm hiệu năng 30%->60% cho các ứng dụng sử dụng nhiều IO (db, vm, NVidia driver...)
2. Spectre: đây cũng là lỗi leak kernel, tuy nhiên, lỗi này ít nghiêm trọng hơn vì chỉ có thể đọc kernel. Lỗi này Intel cũng bị ảnh hưởng trực tiếp, AMD trừ phi cố tình tắt config default ở một số CPU cũ (Ryzen không bị ảnh hưởng) thì mới dính và khó khai thác hơn Intel rất nhiều.
