Special thanks to the following people, who helped make the Legend of Cao Cao English patch a reality:
- Curtis (GreatRedSpirit), who translated the unit/item descriptions and the critical hit/retreat lines from Engrish into real English. He also did a lot of thankless (but crucial) behind-the-scenes work such as dumping text and matching officers to their lines in the script. His attempt at an English hack of the executable file back in 2005 inspired me greatly in my current hack.
- Sun Gongli and expression, who translated the bulk of the officer biographies.
- Lulu, who designed the English-version opening logo.
- Taishi Ci 2.0, perhaps the best game-tester and proofreader I could ever hope for.
- James, who provided webspace and general moral support.
- Everyone above plus Terranigma Freak, Xiahou Mao, and Kong Wen, who pitched in with game-testing and/or translation suggestions
- van, who created the Legend of Cao Cao scenario editor and image editor, and ½–|Сӹ²Å, who created the Legend of Cao Cao multi-purpose editor. Without them, I would have been eating nothing but hexadecimal soup for months.
- The resourceful folks out at the
http://www.xycq.net/forum, whose research on hacking and modding this game made many of the technical aspects of creating this patch possible.

I. What this patch contains
-----------------------
This patch is not a stand-alone version of the game. You need to have your own copy of Legend of Cao Cao (Simplified Chinese no-CD version; other versions not supported).
This patch contains the following files:
- Ekd5-English_Beta.exe
- Imsg.e5 (contains officer biographies, unit/item/tactic descriptions, battle names, critical hit/retreat lines, and credits)
- Data.e5 (contains the names and system-related data of the officers/units/items/tactics, and data relating to the stages)
- mp3serv.dat (tells the program where to find the background music)
- R_00.eex to R_58.eex (data files for non-battle scenarios)
- S_00.eex to S_57.eex (data files for battle stages)
- Logo.e5 (contains the English version logo on the main screen)
----------------------
II. What to do with the files----------------------
1. Backup original files.
2. Unzip the new files into the original Legend of Cao Cao game directory.
3. Make sure that your PC defaults to Simplified Chinese for non-Unicode programs. To do this (in WinXP), go to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> Language for Non-Unicode Programs -> Chinese (PRC). You may have to reboot if you change this setting.
4. Run Ekd5-English_Beta.exe.

III. Known bugs and problems
-----------------------
- The names of the officers in the "Deployment" screen are garbled, as some of the officers' names are too long to display properly. You can still find out who's who by moving the cursor over the candidate and looking at their info in the panel on the right. I can't think of a possible fix for this bug, but if you can, please let me know!
- When you hover your mouse over a sprite in battle, a box with information about that character will show up. Some names are too long and run into the unit class name. Again, please let me know if you have an idea about how to fix it.
- In the original game, after collecting all 50 items in the Treasure Collection (which entails playing through the game at least twice), when you start a new game Xu Zijiang should offer to unlock all items for you during the tutorial. For some unknown reason, Xu Zijiang doesn't offer you the goods in the patched executable.

IV. Please give me feedback on...
-------------------------
- Translation errors, spelling/grammatical errors, or stylistic issues in the text.
- Text placement, line breaks, etc.
- Places where it seems I missed a line (say, in the middle of a conversation).
- Bugs affecting gameplay.

*Thanks for playing, and I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do!*
