CM2008 press release 30/08/2007
CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER™ 2008 SET FOR PRE-XMAS RELEASE
Eidos Interactive, one of the world’s leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, today announces that Championship Manager™ 2008 will be released on PC in the run-up to Christmas 2007.

Developed by London based Beautiful Game Studios (BGS), Championship Manager 2008 is fully updated for the 2007/2008 football season and has a completely different look with new skins, menu shortcuts and an improved user interface making it the most easily accessible title in the series to date.

The game also boasts a vastly improved match engine with improved realism, analysing each player and making them react on pitch to the action depending on what their ‘real-life’ tendencies are as a footballer. For example, a player who likes to overlap and send crosses in from the by-line will try and do so as much as possible during a game. This new system creates a realistic simulation of how footballers behave in real life match situations and managers can even train individual squad members to incorporate tendencies into their match skill set.

The match engine in 3-D, now shows players jostling for position with the opposition, sliding in for tackles as well as keepers diving for the ball, adding to the realistic depiction of the match on the pitch. Furthermore following on from its debut appearance in Championship Manager 2007, ProZone is back as a fully integrated Post Match Analysis tool which isolates the key factors that decided the result of your game and provides you with the knowledge to act on the match incidents and strengthen your team for the next fixture.

Championship Manager 2008 also still remains the fastest football management simulation on the market and has been streamlined to provide the player with a constant gameplay experience free of unnecessary delays. It also features the Australian leagues and now with a new Multiplayer mode, play with your friends and enjoy the game together on a single PC!

Championship Manager 2008 allows you to manage your football club to glory, handling everything from tactics and training to transfers. It’s the only way to experience the awesome highs and challenging lows of being a real-life football manager.

Feature 3: New training features 01/10/2007
Training

Having sat back and listened to what people wanted from training and the things they didn’t like from the CM2007 version we decided not to change too much but aim to make it:

+ Less Complicated
+ More Realistic
+ More Personal so you feel you have an influence over the way the player performs
+ And more user friendly
img_245.jpg

To make it less complicated we’ve taken away the ability to choose each drill for each one hour period and the training wizard and replaced it with the ability to choose from 9 types of training

+ Defensive
+ Midfield
+ Attack
+ Fitness
+ Tactical
+ Passing
+ Shooting
+ Pre-Season

Choosing one of these will mean that the Assistant Manager will create a detailed training diary for the week incorporating fixtures and correct warm up and warm down schedules as used by professional clubs the day before and after matches. This means that the diary at the top of the page is dynamic with the current day being the day furthest to the left.

Taking unnecessary complexity out of training meant that we could then spend time on making training more personal to players. When taking over a club all the players will be on team training, following the schedule that the Assistant Manager set up at the top of the screen, but this is easily changed if you want to delve a little deeper into the training. You have the option with each player to either:

+ Follow the team training
+ Individual training – so if you don’t want him to follow team training the Assistant will create a schedule especially for him
+ Retrain Position – This means that on top of the training with the team, the player will also be getting trained to become comfortable in the position chosen by you. The younger the player, the more adaptable he is. Furthermore the closer the likeness of the new position to the old position the quicker he’ll learn how to play there. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks basically. I’ve used this quite a bit with my youth players. If I see a lad who’s a central, creative player with high pace I’ll retrain him as a winger for example.
+ Mould Player – This, like the retraining of position, takes place on top of the team training and gives you the ability to change the player’s tendencies in certain situations. Theses situations are:

o Forward Positioning
+ Drop Deep
+ Push Up

o Full Back Attacking Mentality
+ Look for Overlaps
+ Sit Back

o Comfort On The Ball
+ Carry ball out of defence
+ Get rid of the Ball

o Positional Discipline
+ Hold Position
+ Bomb Around

o Distribution Preferences
+ Distribute to the Wings
+ Play Balls Through the Middle

o Passing Preference
+ Stretch Play
+ Look for Simple Pass

o Forward Mentality
+ Hold Up Ball
+ Head for Goal

o One v One Situations
+ Round the Keeper
+ Shoot

o Approach Play
+ Drift Out Wide
+ Stay Central

o Wide Dribbling Preferences
+ Cut Inside
+ Hug Touchline

o Creative Mentality
+ Run With Ball
+ Release Others

o Passing Direction Preferences
+ Pass Backwards
+ Pass Forwards

o Attacking End Product
+ Shoot from Distance
+ Work Openings

o Sportsmanship
+ Look to Stay on Feet
+ Look to Dive

These will also take time to train although not as long as retraining a player’s position. It does take time to change a players’ mindset when he gets into certain situations, but it is worth the wait.

The training really has become a lot simpler to use this time around but at the same time it gives you more control over your players and has become much more useful in general. I now find myself using it much more than previously and as I said in my tendency report: successfully teaching a player to round the keeper in one v one situations or retraining an average central player into a dangerous winger, makes you really feel proud that you had a hand in his development. Feature 4: Player Tendencies 02/10/2007
Player Tendencies

Player tendencies, what are they? This is something a few people have been asking recently, so I’m going to give you a report of what they are and what effect they have within the game. There are 16 tendencies that each are made of two opposites. This means that that a full back who will “look for overlaps” won’t also tend to “sit back”.

This is a list of all the tendencies in the game and a short explanation as to how they work:

For Goalkeepers

Stay Online – Rush Out
This will show how likely it is for the keeper to stay on his line or rush out to an on coming forward.

Punch Crosses - Catch Crosses
This is how likely it is for the keeper to punch or catch a cross.

For Outfield Players

Drop Deep – Push Up
This is used mainly for forwards/strikers and how likely they are to drop deep for the ball or play on the shoulder of the last defender.

Look for Overlaps – Sit Back
This is used mainly with Full Backs and Wing Backs. It’ll mean that a player is going to try and overlap the midfielder on his side of the pitch to try and get into the attacking 3rd or sit back and let the opposition attack him.

Carry Ball out of defence – Get Rid of ball
This is something mainly for defenders. It will determine whether a player is more likely to carry the ball out of defence and look for a pass to his midfielders or whether he wants to get rid of it as soon as possible no matter where it is.

Hold Position – Bomb Around
This is mainly for midfielders. This tendency determines how much a player is likely to close down the ball or hold his tactical position.

Distribute to wings – Play balls through the middle
This is mainly for central players, defenders, midfielders. It shows how likely it is that they pass the ball to the wings or try to keep it central.

Stretch Play – Look for simple pass
This is mainly for midfield players and full backs. It determines how likely it is that they will look to play long passes that will stretch the play or keep passes simple and short range.

Hold up the Ball – Head for Goal
This is mainly for attacking central players such as Forwards, Strikers, Attacking Midfielders. It determines whether when the player receives the ball in the attacking 3rd of the field he’ll hold it up for oncoming team mates or head for goal himself.

1v1 round the keeper – 1v1 Shoot
This is mainly for attacking players, strikers, forwards or wingers, and determines how likely they are to round the keeper or attempt to place it past the keeper in 1v1 situations.

Drift out wide – Stay Central
This is for central players and shows how likely it is, regardless of possession, that they will stay central or drift wide.

Cut Inside - Hug Touchline
This is for wide players and determines whether they are likely to cut inside or hug the touchline when in possession of the ball.

Run with the ball – Release others
This is mainly for attacking players and determines the likelihood of the player taking people on and progressing up the pitch when in possession or releasing others in front of them.

Pass Backwards – Pass Forwards
This is used mainly for defensive central players and determines the likelihood of the player passing it forward or back when receiving the ball.

Long Range Shooting – Work Openings
This is used mainly for attacking players that aren’t strikers and shows how likely they are to shoot from distance or to work an opening for a team mate.

Stay on feet – Look to Dive
This is for everyone and determines whether a player will look to go to ground or stay on his feet when challenged.

The above tendencies are there for two reasons:

1) To make players in the match engine play as much like their real life counter parts as possible, so Thierry Henry will have a tendency to drift wide and Frank Lampard will tend to shoot from long range. In other words: It makes the players in the game behave in a more realistic manner.
img_247.jpg

2) To mould players through their training, which is extremely useful. To give a personal example: In my recent Welling game I had a forward with pace who would quite often find himself in one on one situations with the keeper but would always shoot too soon, squandering his goal scoring opportunity because he just didn’t have the ability to place the ball accurately. I did notice that his dribbling was rather good though, so I trained him to round the keeper in one on one situations. Over a few months he gradually became more comfortable with this. It took a while but gradually over time every time he was in a one on one situation his first instinct was to round the keeper if it was a sensible option. I had successfully moulded him from a 10 goal a season player to a 18 goal a season player and every time I see him round the keeper it makes me proud I had a part in his development. :)

Tendencies are not something that intrude massively into your day to day playing of the game, but they add so much more flavour to the players you already know, as well as giving you the ability to mould players into what you want them to be, which gives you a real sense of achievement when the player and the team are more successful because of it.
