We’re betting a rather large chunk of you haven’t played Fallout before. It did come out over a decade ago… and two generations of home consoles ago… and even then, only on the PC. Those of you who have played it are no doubt avid fans, as it was hard not to be impressed with this influential series. Either way, in the lead up to the long awaited third release in the series we thought a recap of Fallout’s hypothetical future would be in order.
Once you’re done, don’t forget to see our huge Episode 1 in Fallout week, where we talk to Tim Howard about how they have approached the series.
2051 - US Government places sanctions on Mexico, claiming pollution from the south is a danger to America. As Mexico is destabilised by the economic impact of these sanctions, the US military invades to protect the oil refineries and keep fuel heading north.
2052 - The Resource Wars begin as the European Commonwealth invades the Middle East over increased fuel costs. Many small nations go bankrupt. As the UN tries in vain to keep the peace, many nations begin to leave the organisation. The UN cannot take the strain and disbands before the summer is out.
2053 - The ‘New Plague’ sweeps America, leading to borders being closed in the first-ever national quarantine. A nuclear terrorist attack destroys Tel Aviv.
2054 - A limited nuclear conflict in the Middle East causes apprehension in the rest of the world. The United States, in light of the plague and nuclear conflict in the Middle East, sets in motion Project Safehouse, to build shelters for the population in the event of a nuclear attack on US soil. Construction of the vaults begins.
2055 - West Tek begins research into a virus that could kill the New Plague.
2059 - The Anchorage Front Line, intended to protect American oil interests in Alaska, causes tensions between the US and Canada. The first AI is born. Its memory is limited so that while it expands rapidly, it cannot usurp its creators.
2060 - Fuel becomes so precious that people stop using their cars. Electric and fusion alternatives are explored, but develop slowly. Resource Wars end as the oil wells run dry and the purpose of the war is lost, leaving both sides on the brink of destruction.
2062 - Paranoia spreads through the United States as the New Plague continues to flourish.
2063 - Most of the vaults are completed, leading to a regular campaign of vault drills. However, their frequency creates apathy and drill turnouts begin to drop. Vault 13 finally starts construction.
2065 - Due to energy demands, a nuclear reactor in New York nearly goes critical, leading to energy rationing in the United States. US military begins development of Power Armour as the need for highly mobile units becomes more apparent to the US Government.
2066 - Chinese dependence on fossil fuels and growing instability of its economy leads it to look to America for trade, but with the US blocking the export of oil, tensions mount. The first fusion cell is perfected, but roll-out of this new source of energy is slow. Its creation does nothing to improve relations with China.
That winter, China invades Alaska and the Anchorage Front Line is drawn into combat. Canada initially blocks the movement of American troops through its land and airspace, but
backs down.
2067 - The first Power Armour suit is deployed in Canada against the Chinese and proves highly effective against tanks and heavy artillery, with little risk to the soldier.
2069 - Vault 13 is completed and begins drills but, thanks to its late completion, adherence to the drills is positive and doesn’t succumb to drill fatigue as in other areas.
2070 - The first fusion-powered cars produced by Chryslus sell out despite a heavy price tag, but the needs of the war prevent many from being made as Chryslus is drafted into the war effort.
2072 - US use of Canadian resources for the war leads to violent protests and an attempt to sabotage the Alaskan pipeline. America takes this as a cue to annex Canada.
2073 - The use of biological weapons by the Chinese military leads to the US investing in a Pan-Immunity Virion Project (PVP), led by West Tek.
2074 - American Power Armour units are sent to the Chinese mainland, but get bogged down in the conflict there, making little progress.
2075 - The PVP shows some signs of success and is renamed the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). FEV experiments escalate from single-celled organisms to small mammals
2076 - US annexation of Canada is completed, with protestors shot on sight. These atrocities are all beamed back to American homes where unrest builds. A new form of Power Armour is developed, which proves far more effective on the Chinese front and becomes the standard for the military. Food and energy riots break out in major cities across the United States. A state of emergency is declared and martial law introduced in many areas. Tests of FEV on chimpanzees prove very effective and drive plans for quarantined tests on towns in North America.
2077 - West Tek FEV researchers are moved to the Mariposa military base. Alaska is reclaimed. Power Armour is used against the American people for crowd control. Many soldiers desert as a result, and are imprisoned. FEV research is leaked to the world, leading to further protests and riots globally as fears grow as to the ultimate purpose of the research. Accusations abound that the New Plague was government-made. Captain Roger Maxson of Mariposa base discovers military prisoners are being used as test subjects and deserts. His loyal men join him as he takes control of the Mariposa base and gathers local families into the base, fearing the worst.
The Great War begins as nuclear weapons are launched and strike US soil. No one knows who fired first or indeed who fired at what. Sirens ring, but many believe it is just another drill. The Vaults close, regardless of the numbers who enter.
A nuclear weapon hits the West Tek research facility, releasing FEV into the atmosphere and mutating any and all life forms it touches. Checking that radiation levels were not too high,
Captain Maxson leads the people within Mariposa to the Lost Hills bunker, where they will be better protected against future attacks.
2080 - The first effect of the mutated FEV begins to show as those creatures that survive are changed and new species begin to emerge.
2083 - Necropolis is founded by the deformed ‘survivors’ of Vault 12, later known as the ghouls.
2091 - Vault 8 opens and, using a Garden of Eden Creation Kit (GECK), begins the creation of Vault City.
2103 - The first super mutants are born as the man previously known as Richard Grey perfects the use of FEV. Now calling himself the Master, he begins the creation of his army.
2126 - The Great Merchant War begins around The Hub as traders attempt to establish dominance of the region.
2128 - Peace is settled in The Hub with a new ruling Council set up to settle disputes and maintain the rule of law.
2131 - At the behest of the Master, super mutants begin to attack caravans for further test subjects.
2157 - The Master discovers and orders an attack on Vault 12, but finding only ghouls instead of humans he bargains for their support in the future.
2161 - A dweller from Vault 13 is sent out in search of a water chip to save his home.
2162 - The Vault Dweller finds the water chip in Necropolis and, discovering the Master, sets about destroying him. Despite successfully saving Vault 13, the vault’s Overseer denies him entry. On hearing this news, some other members of the vault leave, too.
2165 - The village of Arroyo is founded by the Vault Dweller and his followers.
2185 - The mutant Marcus and Paladin Jacob establish Broken Hills, where human, mutant and ghoul live in harmony.
2186 - The New California Republic
is founded.
2220 - The Enclave elect a new president in the form of a Congressman named Richardson. Enclave scientists develop the Mark II Power Armour.
2221 - The Chosen One is born.
2236 - The Enclave discovers the Mariposa base and the FEV. Research into its effects begins in earnest. Mutations begin among those who first reached the base.
2237 - A second generation of super mutants is born through exposure to Mariposa FEV.
2242 - The Chosen One leaves Arroyo in search of a GECK. The Enclave send an ‘all clear’ signal to Vault 13 and, when the doors open, kidnap the inhabitants, using deathclaws to mop up anyone who attempts to escape. The Chosen One destroys the Enclave’s oil- rig base, killing the President of the United States in the process.
