Nội dung của Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece chủ yếu xoay quanh những cuộc chiến tranh đẫm máu để bảo vệ tổ quốc và tranh giành lãnh thổ của người Macedonia, người Athen và người Sparta. Mỗi dân tộc đều có ưu nhược điểm khác nhau mà bạn sẽ dần khám phá trong quá trình chơi game.

Âm nhạc trong game được nhà sản xuất đầu tư khá kĩ lưỡng. Còn về đồ họa, dễ nhận thấy Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece không được hoa mĩ như người họ hàng xa Total War, bạn cũng sẽ không được chiêm ngưỡng bất kì đoạn video cắt cảnh cũng như những cuộc chiến hoành tráng nào cả, thay vào đó là các bức tranh kèm theo lời dẫn lịch sử bên dưới. Đây là chuyện dễ hiểu khi mà dung lượng game chỉ gói gọn trong 600 MB.

Một điểm độc đáo trong Hegemony Gold là game cho phép bạn dịch chuyển con lăn chuột để phóng to, thu nhỏ bản đồ, điều này hết sức tiện lợi khi mà chiến trường của game quá lớn. Bạn có thể kiểm lại những thành phố của mình, xem ở khu vực nào đang xảy ra tranh chấp, và điều quân đi lại một cách thuận lợi nhất.

Điều đáng nhắc tới nữa trong game là hệ thống AI vô cùng khôn khéo. Khi chơi những cấp độ càng cao, bạn sẽ càng thấy máy chơi cực kì khó chịu. Chúng luôn chờ khi bạn đem quân đi xa mà đánh úp thành bạn, luôn thoắt ẩn thoắt hiện, và tìm đủ mọi cách cắt đứt đường vận chuyển lương thảo của bạn. Tuy nhiên, để giúp người chơi dễ dàng đối phó với AI hơn, game cho phép pause để suy nghĩ và ra lệnh cho quân. Pause thường xuyên cũng có thể giúp bạn khắc phục kĩ năng phản xạ chưa tốt.

Nhìn chung, Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece đem đến một gameplay hết sức sáng tạo chỉ vẻn vẹn trong 600 MB. Đây sẽ là tựa game không thể bỏ qua dành cho người hâm mộ dòng Real-time Strategy nói chung và Total War nói riêng.
