Fan of The Hunger Games series know that it is near impossible to read this series of books and not fall in love with them. Most people get hooked within a couple of chapters an then spend a few sleepless nights steamrolling through the remaining books before succumbing to Post-Panem withdrawal an self medicating with frequent trips to tumblr or their favorite Hunger Games fansite.

Today the New York Times explains how book sales of Hunger Games are a good indication of box office success for the up-coming film adaptation:

About 9.6 million books in Suzanne Collins’s “Hunger Games” trilogy were in circulation in the United States when Lionsgate started production on its adaptation of the first novel in the summer, according to figures from Scholastic, which published the works.

Tim Palen, the studio’s chief marketing officer, started adding kindling soon after, slowly doling out images of the characters — including Jennifer Lawrence as the young heroine, Katniss Everdeen — and sneak-peek film footage to MTV.

By early November, after a heavy online marketing push, 16 million books from the trilogy were in print in the United States. The first full-length trailer made its debut on Nov. 18 (with “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1”), igniting Facebook and the blogosphere. There are now 23.5 million books in print in the domestic market.

In the course of less than a year, the number of Hunger Games books in print has more than doubled, and if each book belongs to a new (rabid) fan who will not only get MORE people to read the series, but also buy a ticket to see the film in March, then all signs point to a very good box office draw for Lionsgate. (Heck, if even half of that 23.5 million buys a movie ticket, we’d hit that 100 million dollar goal EASILY.)

[video=youtube;21VZTC3zGd0]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21VZTC3zGd0&feature=player_embedded[/video]
I saw some stills of you in the film and you have a very distinctive look. Is that just the style in the future?

Everything that we did in the movie is based very specifically on the book. We are very faithful to the book. So Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games, came up with all this crazy, kinky stuff for what she wanted everybody to look like, and we put it into the movie. So don’t blame me.

Oh, I’m not complaining. I think it’s hot.

We all sort of collaborated […] Everybody who reads the book has their own image in their mind and interprets it in their own way. So our version of Effie is, it’s like six different people’s interpretations, mixed together and put into this.

I’m really looking forward to seeing it. I keep looking at this book and thinking, “Oh, I should read that, but I’m so busy…”

It will take you five hours to read the whole thing. You will not be able to put it down.

Were you a fan before you signed on to the movie?

Yes, I’m actually a proud fan. I was an early adopter of the books. I read the books long before they were bestsellers. It was given to me by a publishing friend, and so I had checked them out forever ago.

Elizabeth Banks: ‘Cần 2,5 tiếng trang điểm cho vai Effie mỗi lần quay’
It’s about 2 and a half hours to go full effie. When I get to wear gloves, it’s 45 minutes less. I really I tried to wear gloves as much as possible because once I had the nails on, I couldn’t barely pick up this picture, send texts, dial a phone, go to the bathroom, zip, button. Very much put me in the mindset of the character, because I bet Effie has someone who does all that for her.”

“I was a fan (of the book series) long before. I read the books years ago. Right when they came out. A publishing friend recommended it. I got on the Amazon wait list for Mockingjay.”

The Hunger Games Running Time: 2 Hours and 15 Minutes?
While there hasn’t been any official announcement from Lionsgate about the rating or running time for The Hunger Games movie, the site wildaboutmovies.com has both pieces of information listed.

According to the site, The Hunger Games will be rated PG-13 (which is in line with what Gary Ross and the studio have previously said the film would be rated) and have a running time of 2 hours and 15 minutes.

We haven’t been able to verify this information anywhere else, and we don’t know much about wildaboutmovies.com, so please consider this very much a rumor at this point.

However, it leads to a fun discussion point – how long would you like The Hunger Games movie to be? While many of us would likely be happy to sit through a 5 hour movie adaptation of The Hunger Games (any takers?), a long running time can potentially turn off movie viewers who aren’t already fans of The Hunger Games. Most movies nowadays seem to be around 90-120 minutes long, making this a bit longer than your average movie. So, too long? Too short? Just right? Let us know what you think!

Thanks to our reader Tucker for the tip!

Josh Hutcherson Says ‘The Cornucopia Stuff Looks Amazing’
TeenHollywood: Have you seen any more finished shots for the film? How are you reacting so far?

Josh: I can’t wait for it to come out. I’ve seen some of the footage and the cornucopia stuff looks amazing; the countdowns when we all rush in, the way Gary [Ross, the director] edited it, it looks incredible.

TeenHollywood: Why did you connect so much with the Peeta character?

Josh: For me, Peeta has a very strong belief that no matter what circumstance you’re in, you have to maintain who you are as a person and stay true to yourself and that’s my biggest moral as a human being. As well as he has a very self-deprecating sense of humor and he’s good at communicating with people. I felt like his voice and his overall existence was very much who I was.

Next up is The Hunger Games. How gruelling was the audition process?
Mentally it was tough because I’d never connected with a character more than I did with Peeta. I felt he was so much like who I am as a person that I was like, “If I dont get it, I won’t understand.” It drove me crazy.

if it becomes the new Twilight, are you prepared?
I’m terrified of what my life could become. As an actor, everyone hopes one day to be that well known but at the same time to be thrust into it instantaneously is overwhelming. If it does happen, I’ll be grateful and terrified at the same time.

“How Can I Not Play Myself?”
I said out loud that if I didn’t get that role, I didn’t know what I was gonna do. I had no idea. I was gonna keep acting but I never read a role that I connected with as much and that I felt like I was more right for in my life, so if I didn’t get it then I was like “Well, am I just a bad actor then?” Because Peeta is so much who I am how can I not play myself?

The Hunger Games Cast and Crew Oscar Acclaimations
But instead of looking at the future, Next Movie suggests we should be looking into the past of the cast and crew of The Hunger Games who, altogether, have amassed an incredible 30 past nominations and quite a few wins (which span acting, direction, and special effects categories) with Katniss leading the charge:

Jennifer Lawrence: 1

Katniss herself, Jennifer Lawrence, was one of 2010′s Best Actress nominees for her work as Ree in “Winter’s Bone,” and while she didn’t win, she sure turned some heads and clenched her spot on the list of must-watch young actresses early in her career thanks to it.

Self proclaimed Hunger Gamesi fanboy and director Gary Ross adds to the count:
Gary Ross: 4

One of the most-nominated members of the “Hunger Games” team is director Gary Ross, who’s scored a total of four. His screenplay for “Big” earned him a 1989 Best Original Screenplay nomination, as did his script for “Dave” in 1994. He went on to get Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture nominations for “Seabiscuit” in 2004.

Not to mention T Bone Burnett who is helming the music department:
T-Bone Burnett: 2

When it comes to the soundtrack and score, “The Hunger Games” is in very capable hands. T-Bone Burnett was nominated for Best Original Song in 2004 for “Scarlet Tide” from “Cold Mountain,” and in 2010 he won the Best Original Song prize for “The Weary Kid” from “Crazy Heart.” We’re sure he’s gonna knock our socks off again this year.

And in the Special Effects division (and providing almost a third of the total nominations herself), Ve Neill:
Ve Neill: 7

Makeup is of utmost importance to “The Hunger Games,” so who better to hire in as the department head and designer than Ve Neill herself, three-time Oscar winner and seven-time nominee? Ve Neill won Best Makeup Oscars in 1989 for “Beetlejuice,” in 1994 for “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and again in 1995 for “Ed Wood.” She was also nominated for the same category in 1991 for “Edward Scissorhands,” twice again in 1993 for “Batman Returns” and “Hoffa,” then in 2004 for “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” and once more for “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” in 2008. Needless to say, Neill’s resume speaks for itself.

Elizabeth Banks on Her Chances of Survival in the Hunger Games: “I Would Fight Extremely Dirty”
The film adaptation of The Hunger Games comes out on March 23, and it’s hotly anticipated by fans of the book trilogy. How did you prepare for your role as Effie, a handler from the dystopian Capitol?
A decent amount was the physical transformation. [In the film,] we live in an oppressed society. I’m one of the privileged citizens, so I wanted to be reminded constantly that I’m restricted in everything I do. All of my clothes were very tight and corseted. The other thing I really loved [about my outfits] was any aspect that would really antagonize [District 12’s heroine] Katniss.

How so?
Katniss is very dependent on nature: She loves the woods and relies on them for sustenance. She’s very respectful of the animals and plants. I loved the idea that Effie uses those things for adornments—she just doesn’t care.

The Hunger Games are a fight to the death. If you had to do Effie’s job and supervise a competitor, which costar—past or present—would you pick?
I think Mark Wahlberg would kick a lot of butt, but Josh Brolin would fight dirty, because he’d want to win. Mark would be super physical, but Josh would be very cunning.

What if you were the one battling 23 other people?
I would fight extremely dirty, ’cause I’m a very small person! I would do a lot of hiding, a lot of running away, with as little hand-to-hand combat and as little interaction as possible.

Do you think you’d win?
I think I could get pretty far! I would definitely be smart about it. I wouldn’t make any alliances. I’d trust no one.

Is ‘The Hunger Games’ Building Too Much Buzz For Its Own Good?
NPR asks the question: Is the Hunger Games building too much buzz? Honestly, we don’t think so. Right now, the anticipation for the Hunger Games is so high, fans will take whatever Lionsgate gives them. The recent launch of the CapitolCouture.PN seems to have ignited the fandom once more, so contrary to what media sites have to say…something is working to keep the excitement going.

It seems like every time you turn around, there’s another teaser of some sort of The Hunger Games, which comes out March 23. There are cast shots, posters, trailers, exclusive magazine features, product tie-ins … not even The Dark Knight Rises pops up in my RSS feed quite so often, offering a new something-or-other. (“Another day, another still” said IFC on January 17.) With two months to go, the marketing is already at a fever pitch, which already has fans of Suzanne Collins’ book series talking about how they cannot wait for the movie, because they’re just so excited.

And the frustrated worrywart in me believes it might all be too much.

The desire to build a genuine frenzy is an understandable one. How can it not seem like a good idea to get everybody talking, to keep the buzz — an unfortunate word that can apply equally to genuine substantive anticipation as well as ginned-up hot air — as high as possible? If one teaser poster gets people cranked up to a 10, surely it’s a good idea to release ten teaser posters to crank them up to 100, right? How else do you become the next Harry Potter, able to make a gazillion dollars with a single blink?

James Newton Howard Talks Composing and Hunger Games
James Newton Howard, who was tapped after Danny Elfman withdrew to score The Hunger Games, recently sat down with Go See Talk to speak about his long career in composing:

What is your criteria for taking a project and what are your first steps in getting started?

JNH: I take a project based on a couple things. At this stage in my career, there are a lot of relationships involved. A handful of directors, when they do a movie, it’s a no brainer. It’s an automatic. Just do it. You know, it’s like a marriage- you’re in there for better or worse. And sometimes it’s better, and sometimes it’s worse, but friendships are established and creative relationships are established and it becomes very meaningful in that regard. Other things can have to do with a new director who I’m really dying to work with who perhaps has made a film that I truly admire, and I’ll seek them out and say you know if there’s ever an opportunity to work with you, I’d love to do it. Sometimes it’s just a great script with no money, and I just love the script.

The first thing I do inevitably is just start writing music. I generally will write a suite- like an eight or a ten minute suite just based on my impressions of the script and my conversations with the director. I really started that process when I started working with Night (M. Night Shyamalan), and I’ve been doing it that way ever since. Night was really the first director I had ever worked with who wanted a lot of music before he started shooting. That really turned out to be a valuable experience. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve written a suite before they started shooting and then derived significant material out of those suites and the theme in the final version of the score.

He also speaks about how long he takes to compose for film, including our first glimpse at the actual running time of the score:

Talk to me about your time frame. You score quite a few movies in a year. It’s getting quite a lot-

JNH: Too many.

Really?

JNH: It depends. I mean I just did The Hunger Games and finishied it. Well, I’m still not finished with it. I still have to mix it. But, I did that- about eighty some minutes in [inaudible]. That I don’t recommend., but sometimes.. I’ve gotten the reputation that I’m fast which I suppose is good… Normally I would like to have three months.

And on whether or not he approaches films differently based on their fanbase:

You said that usually you’d like about three to four months to compose something, but sometimes you end up getting about four to five weeks. Now let’s say you take a project. How do approach composing an original story like The Village versus composing something with an existing fanbase like The Hunger Games or the novel Water for Elephants?

JNH: Well, I don’t really think about it any differently, quite frankly. Maybe that’s a weakness. But I know there was some- some of the fanbase criticized my approach to The Last Airbender because I didn’t acknowledge or pay homage to the score that was in, I guess it was an animated series. Quite frankly, I never even watched the animated series. I watched one episode, and I’m sure the music was great in that, but my first feeling is that I’m there to serve what the film is, and if that connects somehow with people’s expectations of a pre-existing idea then that’s great. If it doesn’t, well you can’t make everybody happy all the time.

I think in the case of Hunger Games, you know that was a situation where it’s obviously a sense of place with the main character. So that kind of defines a certain vocabulary to some extent.

Holyyyy Shitttttttttt :((

Lionsgate has confirmed to us that the spot is actually a trailer and it will air during the pre-game show and not the game itself.
