What awaits mankind in 9,000 AD? BorderZone is an action role-playing game that challenges players to assume the role of Olaf, one of the few remaining humans on the planet Terra. Centuries after the downfall of modern man, players find themselves in the world of Terra, an apocalyptic earth where the past and the future have blurred. Terran elders speak of a time when people possessed unprecedented power over Nature, an ancient and now forgotten witchcraft known as "Science".

Players create Olaf from several disciplines, including thief, magician or soldier. Characters are further developed in the game through group affiliations, moral classes and professions.

Each character is able to use several different types of weapons and is supplied with a quick access mode. There are more than 80 types of close combat weapons and 10 kinds of projectile weapons. Magicians will have access to binding, paralyzing, blinding, annihilating and various other types of offensive and defensive spells.

History
On the planet Terra the past and the future have blurred. By night, Selena and Deya gleam in the sky and by day, Sollar illuminates the arid planet - laid to waste by the effects of the great Collapse.

The tales of the great catastrophe, The Collapse, have been passed down for generations, although the details have faded. Most of the elders speak of a time, six or seven thousand years ago, when people possessed unprecedented power over Nature with an ancient, now forgotten, witchcraft known as "Science". They tell tales of when men could fly in the air, swim under water and even traveled to Selena, feats only the most rare magicians on Terra can still perform. The gods of ancient times grew angry and could no longer stand man's arrogance - and so came the Collapse - mankind's "Science" was turned against them and as a result 5 billion people perished. When the devastation subsided the few survivors huddled together, in isolated enclaves, dotted across the remains of the planet.

In time, however, the last of the humans ventured out again, only to discover that they were no longer alone. They found themselves sharing Terra with as many as 10 new races, all possessing "Mind". Though the landscape and its inhabitants had changed, human nature remained the same, and soon people began to compete with the new species. Evolution took on a new form as the people modified and under went "Modis".

People searched for resources, weapons and new forms of domination. They even researched the magicians' old ways of "Science" and began to learn how entire creatures could be grown from a drop of blood. The studied the clues of "Domain" or "Kin Memory", to see how witchcraft influences people, to understand how a man who is a strong soldier, more than likely had a father or grandfather who was a great warrior as well.

So now, in 9,000 AD the humans try to rise again, not only taking the lessons from their dilapidated past, but also facing the challenges of the planet Terra and its newest inhabitants.

Gameplay
The action begins in Taria, the northern province of Kammir, where the local system of chronology records the year as 3285. Players assume the role of Olaf, a 20 years old inhabitant of the farthest boundary post of Kammir, the Northern Fort.

Player can generate the type of character the hero is, choosing from a thief, a magician or a soldier. Five characters can be controlled simultaneously, but others, including mercenaries, can join a party, with teams of up to 10. The characters’ attributes can be divided into several categories: state, skills, degree of protection, and level of weaponry (cold steel weapons, magic, etc.).

The races in the game are divided into groups, classes and professions including various monsters, underdeveloped races, the undead and outer plane creatures.

Each player will be able to use several different types of weapons and will be supplied with a quick weapon access mode. There are more than 80 types of cold steel weapons and 10 kinds of darts. Magicians will have the ability to bind paralytic, blinding, electrocharge and various types of attack and defense spells.

The game is controlled with a mouse and reassignable function keyboard keys.

The quests commence and battles unfold as players develop teams with various skills, armament and magic.

Nếu đây là lần đầu tiên nghe đến "nhãn hiệu" Rogue Trooper, game thủ sẽ có cảm giác rất mới lạ bởi nội dung của trò chơi không hề đi theo các mô tuýp từ trước tới nay. Theo cuốn truyện tranh, Rogue Trooper là cuộc chiến không khoan nhượng giữa một nhóm những siêu chiến sỹ đã được biến đổi gen với thế lực thù địch Norts nhằm giành lại quyền kiểm soát tân thế giới Nu-Earth, nơi lẽ ra đã là mảnh đất để con người đặt chân tới sau khi hành tinh xanh trong hệ mặt trời biến mất.

Bạn sẽ vào vai Rogue, thành viên của một đội biệt kích 4 người. Mỗi chiến sỹ nửa người nửa máy của đội biệt kích này đã được cấy ghép một con chip điện tử vào hộp sọ để có những khả năng đặc biệt. Nhưng có vẻ như chính do những thiết bị tinh vi này mà 3 đồng đội của Rogue đã gặp nạn khi bị kẻ thù phát hiện ở phần cuối của trò chơi, buộc anh lúc này phải tự mình gỡ chíp ra khỏi "gáo dừa" và gắn nó vào một loại vũ khí chuyên dụng để nó chạy lon ton đánh lừa quân thù trong khi anh vẫn ôm khẩu súng đồ sộ trong tay (hơn cả người hùng Rambo của Hollywood) càn quét từng lớp từng lớp địch quân cả người lẫn máy.

Trong phần cuối của trận chiến, khi Rogue vẫn còn giữ nguyên dáng hình của một con người thì Gunnar đã tự lắp đặt lại các bộ phận máy trên cơ thể mình để tạo thành một thứ vũ khí đa năng rất lợi hại, Bagman trở thành bộ giáp trên lưng còn Helm được chuyên biệt hóa thành chiếc mũ bảo vệ với các chức năng xử lý thông tin rất tinh vi. Một chiến sỹ nhưng chiến đấu với 4 nhân cách khác nhau.

Trong trường hợp nguy hiểm, Gunnar sẽ tách mình ra khỏi Rogue để tự thực hiện nhiệm vụ tiêu diệt kẻ thù trong khi nhân vật chính vẫn rảnh tay xả súng. Helm có thể lập trình những phương án hành động cho Rogue và thậm chí còn có thể hack vào hệ thống an ninh để mở những cánh cửa mà bạn không thể vượt qua bằng sức vóc và hỏa lực.

Những khả năng đặc biệt như trên tưởng như đã "quá đã" đối với một game hành động thông thường, nhưng có vẻ như trí tưởng tượng của các chuyên gia thiết kế tại Rebellion không dừng lại ở đó. Với Bagman, cuộc chiến của Rogue còn trở nên hấp dẫn hơn nhiều. Mỗi lần có kẻ thù gục xuống dưới chân mình, anh đều có thể lục lọi thân xác chúng để kiếm lấy những thứ súng ống đạn dược còn sót lại. Sau đó, nhờ Bagman lúc này đã ráp thành bộ máy sau lưng Rogue, tất cả những thứ đồ kể trên sẽ được “chế biến” để trở thành những viên đạn dành riêng cho các loại vũ khí mà bạn sở hữu, hàng đống trái nổ đặc dụng, đồ sơ cứu…

Thực ra, ngoài cách “gia công máy móc” này, trong Rogue Trooper sẽ không có chỗ nào khác cho bạn nhặt nhạnh những đồ vật hữu dụng như trong phần lớn các game bắn súng thông thường. Tất cả đều được lôi ra từ chiếc máy đồ sộ trên lưng nhân vật chính.

Nhưng tất nhiên, càng vào sâu, càng tiêu diệt được nhiều địch thủ, Bagman sẽ càng kiếm được nhiều vũ khí mới, ví dụ như một khẩu shotgun khổng lồ giúp bạn làm biến mất cả một toán quân thù chỉ trong nháy mắt, những trái lựu chuyên biệt ưu ái dành tặng cho các thiết bị điện tử và chiến binh máy móc của lực lượng Norts gần đó . Ở mỗi phần chơi, game thủ sẽ lại có cơ hội sở hữu những thứ “đồ chơi” khá thú vị.

Nếu không muốn mạo hiểm, bạn cũng không cần quăng mình vào những trận giáp lá cà đẫm máu (thực ra thì cũng không rõ có phải máu hay không), Rogue Trooper còn cung cấp thêm rất nhiều phương án tiếp cận kẻ địch khác. Có được lối chơi đa dạng này chính là nhờ vào anh chàng Gunnar đa năng trên tay nhân vật chính. Thậm chí bên cạnh những phút oai hùng với chức năng của một khẩu shotgun công phá, Gunnar còn có lúc biến thân thành một khẩu bắn tỉa chính xác từng milimet qua chiếc thước ngắm cảm ứng trên đầu.

Trong game cũng còn có cả những màn đánh lén cần thiết của thể loại hành động bắn súng. Bạn có thể trườn bò tĩnh lặng dưới sàn và bất ngờ ập lên kết liễu đối thủ chỉ bằng một màn bẻ cổ thành thạo. Mỗi lần như vậy, bạn sẽ thu được nhiều "đạn dược" hơn bình thường. Có một điều khá hài hước trong Rogue Trooper là những tên người Norts có vẻ như không thể thích nghi kịp với không khí trên Nu-Earth nên chúng luôn phải đeo mặt nạ và bình dưỡng khí. Khi thuận lợi, Rogue chỉ cần bắn thủng những chiếc bình này và làm cho hơi ga trong đó rò rỉ ra ngoài để rồi nổ tung kèm theo thân xác kẻ thù.

Ánh sáng động, một trong những công nghệ đồ họa tiên tiến có trong Dreamfall

Đập vào mắt người chơi trước tiên sẽ là đồ họa của Dreamfall với những thay đổi vượt bậc so với TLJ. Thay đổi lớn nhất là môi trường của Dreamfall đã được chuyển hóa hoàn toàn sang môi trường 3D, cho phép bạn có cái nhìn tự do và thoải mái, bạn có thể xoay chuyển để xem xét mọi góc cạnh của thế giới mà người chơi đang trải qua. Nếu các bạn còn nhớ trong bài phân tích về TLJ ở số báo trước đây, tôi có đề cập rằng cả hai thế giới Stark và Arcadia đều mang những nét đặc trưng riêng như những rặng núi đá, phố thị sầm uất hay tòa cao ốc chọc trời..., thì với Dreamfall một lần nữa bạn sẽ thấy thích thú khi xem xét chúng bằng cách xoay chuyển camera, thay vì chỉ có thể "ngắm" cảnh thông qua những bức hình 2 chiều đơn giản. Tổng hợp những yếu tố trên, kết quả đạt được trong Dreamfall thật tuyệt vời. Có thể nêu ví dụ khi bạn cầm ngọn đuốc bước đi trong một ngôi đền, bóng của bạn sẽ lắc lư, in lên tường theo mức to nhỏ tùy thuộc vào khoảng cách giữa bạn với ngọn đuốc... Nhờ đó, hãng sản xuất có thể vẽ nên nhiều khung cảnh đa dạng, một con đường phủ đầy tuyết trắng hay một hang động lạnh lẽo mà ánh mặt trời xuyên qua yếu ớt được thể hiện bằng mức độ bóng của nhân vật trải trên đất...

Bên cạnh những cải tiến về đồ họa, gameplay của Dreamfall cũng có nhiều thay đổi đáng kể. Ấn tượng nhất và có lẽ gây ngạc nhiên nhất cho người hâm mộ là sự xuất hiện của một thể loại chơi mới pha trộn giữa phiêu lưu giải đố và một chút hành động. Để điều khiển nhân vật, thay cho thao tác "trỏ và nhấn" trong phiên bản cũ, người chơi có thể sử dụng thêm các nút bấm trên bàn phím để di chuyển nhân vật, xoay camera và nếu có trong tay một gamepad thì Dreamfall cũng sẽ hỗ trợ hoàn toàn (tương tự như trò Broken sword). Việc hỗ trợ này rất có ý nghĩa vì trên cuộc hành trình của các nhân vật sẽ xuất hiện nhiều loại quái vật cản đường, và nếu như bạn cũng là fan của game hành động thì bạn biết tiếp theo nên làm gì: chiến đấu, lén lút di chuyển trong bóng đêm, tránh né kẻ thù... Lúc đó, sử dụng tay cầm gamepad sẽ dễ dàng biết bao nhiêu. Nhà sản xuất không tiết lộ gì nhiều về hệ thống chiến đấu của các nhân vật, chỉ biết rằng ba nhân vật bạn điều khiển có ba kỹ năng khác nhau và họ sẽ vận dụng những kỹ năng này khi chiến đấu: sức mạnh, độ chính xác và tính lanh lợi. Bật mí nhỏ với các bạn là trong phiên bản Dreamfall lần này, nhân vật chính của chúng ta có thể sử dụng cả môn võ kung fu của Trung Hoa nữa! Nghe thú vị đấy chứ?





Một hang động lạnh lẽo ở vùng đất mới có tên là Winter

Hấp dẫn nhưng hành động sẽ chỉ đóng vai trò nhỏ trong toàn bộ gameplay, chắc chắn nhà sản xuất sẽ không bỏ qua thể loại phiêu lưu, điều đã tạo ra tiếng vang cho TLJ, thu hút phần lớn người hâm mộ thể loại này. Do đó, hiển nhiên là games sẽ có những câu đố mới và cách giải đố trong Dreamfall sẽ hay hơn so với phiên bản cũ. Cách làm như vậy rất hay, nhưng theo tôi có một hạn chế nhỏ là sẽ làm tăng mức độ khó của các câu đố lên chút ít, vì với số lượng đồ vật không hạn chế như vậy người chơi sẽ phải lựa chọn trong mớ bòng bong này thứ nào có thể giúp họ giải quyết được vấn đề phía trước, giống như khi bạn cần tìm một chiếc chìa khóa mà trong tay lại có hàng trăm chiếc chìa khóa khác nhau thì bạn sẽ làm thế nào?

Ngoài hạn chế này, tôi tin rằng Funcom đã đi đúng hướng và sẽ thu hút người chơi bởi gameplay mới lạ của Dreamfall. Nó phá vỡ lối mòn vốn có trong những trò chơi phiêu lưu hiện nay: gò bó người chơi trong một không gian chật hẹp, bắt buộc phải giải quyết các câu đố hóc búa bằng cách mà nhà thiết kế đã đặt ra...Với Dreamfall, không có gì vượt ngoài khả năng của bạn, bạn có thể giải quyết vấn đề theo cách mình muốn. Tuy nhiên (xin được nhấn mạnh điều này), Dreamfall vẫn cho phép bạn làm bất cứ điều gì bạn muốn để giải quyết vấn đề và cho dù bạn làm theo cách nào đi nữa thì bạn luôn đến đích, chỉ khác nhau ở chỗ nó sẽ thể hiện tính cách của bạn như thế nào mà thôi.

Theo thông tin ban đầu, người hâm mộ sẽ phải chờ đợi một thời gian khá dài cho đến mùa thu năm 2005 mới có thể tận tay chơi thử phiên bản mới toanh của TLJ - trò chơi phiêu lưu hay nhất năm 2000. Nếu quả thật Dreamfall đạt được những thay đổi mang tính cách mạng cho dòng game phiêu lưu như đã kể trên thì cũng rất đáng cho chúng ta chờ đợi. Fan hâm mộ đã chờ hơn 5 năm để được nghe thông tin ban đầu về Dreamfall, thêm một năm nữa cũng không có gì là quan trọng lắm.
