"The People Who Made OZ Truly Are Wizards (JP Version)"
Konami has once again been able to come up with yet another powerfully additive game. Unlike your standard hack n' slash, OZ offers air-borne fighting juggling to an insane degree. Those who decide to check this game out, prepared to be amazed!
Graphics - 9 / 10
The game had to suffer just a little bit here due to the graphics. This game ain't exactly Zone of the Enders 2 if you catch my drift, but despite the slight down-grade in the graphics department, the weapon effects, super-attacks, and movie scenes are bound to offer the player a nice treat with a huge array of colours that appear in a variety of ways from beams to sword attacks. Character models aren't the best, however the sharp special effects along with the lightning quick attacks and animations more than make up for it. Just be sure not to go into the game expecting too much out of the graphics.
Gameplay - 10 / 10
No words to describe. You'd have to see it to believe it. When it comes to combo racking hack n' slashers, OZ takes it to an extraordinary level. If you're looking for a hardcore hack n' slash where you run around slaughtering you enemies mindlessly with your blade, then you might want to try something else. Despite the amount of hack and slashing OZ provides the player, there is in fact a huge learning curve as well as strategy when it comes to the gameplay. In every mission, your sole task is to keep you enemies in the air for as long as possible. You can start the combo yourself or tell your CPU allies to start one for you. Once that happens, an extremely fun but hard to master combo chain occurs where you essentially volley the airborne enemy back and forth with your allies to rack up your combo. The longer you can keep it going, the more your power bar fills up which gives you access to mind-blowing super attacks that lets you send more enemies flying through the air to make chain combos that go up to 40 continuous juggles and more. Each boss fight also offers more depth into the gameplay as you and your allies have to discover a way to use the chain combo system to your advantage by finding something that can build up your power bar and expose the boss' weakness. Although later on through the game the fighting gets a little repetitive, the combos you are able to do will be more than enough to keep you busy for quite awhile. Absolutely amazing.
Sound - 10 / 10
What can I say. The second I popped the disc into my PS2, I was already amazed at the music in which this game offers. The intro music offers classical music lovers an unavoidable sense of nostalgia as an enchanting, vocalized version of Mozart's "Polovtsian Dances" begins to play on the title screen. This classical song was originally composed by Mozart as a dance for Prince Igor. Konami was able to take it can completely transform it into something equally as beautiful by adding a vocalist into the music. Fans of Konami's works may detect a hint of sound that is quite similar to that of Zone of the Enders in some of the music. And this is just the title screen. As far as the rest of the game goes, there is seemingly no end to the variety of music you'll hear. Polovtsian Dances is also offered in a trance version, while the in-game BGM varies from a mix of rock, orchestrated, as well as trance as you progress more and more.
Controls - 8 / 10
Despite the complex combo system that OZ gives to the player, the controls are in fact quite simple and easy to learn with your standard jump, attack, super attack, lock-on and block buttons. Unfortunately certain attacks in the game have a ridiculously long delay which leaves your character vulnerable. The circle button acts as a nifty ally controller which allows you to order your allies to either follow you or attack an enemy which is quite convenient if you are low on health and want to avoid a direct confrontation. The only reason the controls in this game didn't get a 10 was because of two things. Camera angles occasionally and the targeting system. In order to lock on to the enemy, the game requires you to be holding down R1 for long periods of time so that you don't lose sight of you airborne victim in the middle of a fray (And believe me, some of the frays get pretty hectic) This is somewhat of a nuisance especially during long periods of time as it puts a strain on your index finger. Next to targeting is the camera angles. The camera adjusting option comes in handy, but becomes rather useless when your victim is across the room while you are surround by five other people with your back facing a wall. Often times you'll find yourself in situations where you are given very little visibility because there is just so much happening around you. Enemies will make it a habit to come and poke you in the back countless times from angles in which you are unable to see. Both the targeting system and camera adjustment requires the player to sacrifice a bit of their control in order to tamper with it, which can often times
get your character beat up if you aren't fast.
Replay Value - 10 / 10
OZ offers a very good replay value for a straight-forward game. In between missions, you are given the option to upgrade you characters as well as purchase costumes, elemental upgrades for weapons, extra item slots, as well as accessories which help give you an edge in battle. EX-Mode allows you to replay previous levels to collect secrets that help unlock even more secrets. You are given the option to play as different characters including ones that you have to unlock. Also featured are galleries, movies galleries, as well as sound tests. The extra features offered in OZ are more than enough to keep you busy if the gameplay alone does not.
Overall - 9 / 10
OZ is truly a masterpiece. They have once again succeeded in creating an absolutely captivating musical score with a seemingly endless and unsurpassed combo system. There are plenty of things for you to do even after you beat the game and the graphics alone are just as nice. The controls are easy to learn, but may require getting used to as it does get tiring. I highly recommend people to play this game. At the present time, OZ is only out in Japan and release information regarding its debut in North America are unknown. Nevertheless I suggest that all those who are able to play Japanese copies on their PS2's to get one now in case it doesn't get released in NA. OZ is without a doubt an incredible game that should not be missed!
