The different between nonverbal communications in different areas has become the focus of sustained research.
Culture and gesture
_There are some common gestures are impolite of offensive if you use them in certain areas such as:
_Folding arms over chest are disrespectful in Fiji.
_Waving hand is insulting in Nigeria and Greece.
_The “Thumb up” is rude in Australia.
_Tapping two index fingers together is an invitation to sleep together in Egypt.
_Pointing with index finger is impolite in Middle East countries.
_Bowing a lesser degree is a statement of superiority in Japan.
_Inserting thumb between index and middle finger in a clenched fist is a curse in some African countries
_Resting feet on a table or chair are insulting and disrespectful in some Middle East countries.
Culture and facial expression
People in different countries may understand the emotion shows on somebody’s face differently.
Culture and eye communication
Eye contacts can be interpreted differently by people from different cultures and genders.
Culture and touch
Touching in Korea, northern Europe some Middle East countries has a negative meaning while in southern Europe, America and some other countries has a friendly meaning.
Non-contact cultures will think that the contact cultures are rude. On the other hand, contact cultures will think about unfriendliness when communicating with non-contact cultures.
Culture and silence
Silence is considered polite in some countries but it is and negative action in other countries.
Nonverbal messages take an important role in communication and interpreted differently from culture to culture. They helps express emotion, impression and interaction.
