ps-vita-unit-13.png

The release of Unit 13 is just a few weeks away now, officially launching on March 6th, but you don’t have to wait that long to get your hands on the game! On Monday, February 20th, Unit 13 is going to take over all eight Vita Hill Social Clubs, giving you the chance to dig in to the full Unit 13 experience and find out what it’s like to play a console-caliber shooter in the palm of your hands. The top scoring players at each location will be eligible for some pretty awesome prizes, so play as much as you can during the limited-time event and try to get your name to the top of the leaderboards. For locations and times, check out the official Vita Hill Social Club page.

If you can’t make it to one of the club dates you might miss out on the prize opportunities but you can still get an early taste of Unit 13 by checking out the downloadable demo via the PlayStation Store on Tuesday, February 21st. The demo gives you access to one of the game’s Direct Action missions and includes all six operatives and online leaderboard support. Perhaps best of all is that your scores and level progress earned in the demo will carry over to the full game once it’s released on March 6th!

As we get closer to Unit 13′s launch day we’ll be bringing you a lot more on the game, including a co-op multiplayer video walkthrough next week right here on the PlayStation Blog that you won’t want to miss. We’re also nearly finished putting the final touches on the official Unit 13 website which will provide in-depth character bios, scoring tips and breakdowns, level progression information and much more that you won’t find anywhere else, so stay tuned for news on that.

Everyone here at Zipper Interactive is really excited that PlayStation Vita fans everywhere will soon be able to get their hands on Unit 13, and we’d love to hear what you think of the demo next week.

Report: Call of Duty franchise coming to Vita this fall.

This year, Activision once again plans to release an annual sequel to its popular Call of Duty franchise. In addition to the traditional console platforms, Sony claims that Activision's major shooter franchise will also debut for PlayStation Vita this fall.

Speaking to GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley in a recent video interview, Sony's new SVP of PlayStation brand marketing, Guy Longworth said, "In the Autumn, [my kids] are really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and that's going to be an absolute game changer for the platform."

Longworth did not specify whether this Call of Duty title would be specially-designed for the PlayStation Vita, or whether it will borrow content from its console-based counterparts.

Gamasutra has contacted Activision for comment, but has not heard back as of press time.

Retailers Report Official Sony Cash Back Campaign For PlayStation Vita

67714370772791c74739z.jpg

Buy a 3G model and game, and get a cool 2000 back.

Earlier this week, Amazon Japan started a campaign which gave a ¥2000 discount to those who bought a PlayStation Vita 3G model along with at least one game. The campaign started on February 15 and will run through March 31.

While Amazon and other retailers often run such bundle campaigns, it turns out that this may actually be an official Sony campaign. Multiple smaller retailers have reported that Sony has given them instructions to begin the same campaign on the 23rd (yes, there seems to be some annoyance that Amazon gets to start it earlier).

It's unclear if Sony will give publicity to the campaign, with an official name and campaign website, or if the campaign will be handled by retailers themselves. We should find out next week when the campaign expands to all retailers.

It's worth noting that the campaign only applies to the 3G model. Amazon is still offering this as the first run limited edition, which includes a pre-paid 3G usage card. The system's MSRP is ¥29,980, but Amazon discounts it to ¥26,707. (Amazon offers similar discounts on most systems, although the percentage varies.)

Set in contemporary and stylish pool bars, the Hustle Kings game allows players to hone in on their billiards skills in one of the most realistic looking billiards settings ever realized.

A completely new Katamari gameplay feature allows players to use the rear touch panel of the PlayStation Vita system to stretch the ball either horizontally or vertically to pick up more objects at once or squeeze through a narrow gap. With many more details yet to be revealed, the Prince is already limbering up in the wings to bring a dose of irresistible Katamari oddness to the PS Vita.

Ben 10 Galactic Racing – The first kart racing game set in the popular BEN 10 universe and based on the hit Cartoon Network TV series features Ben and his alien friends competing in an over-the-top, galactic grand prix race through a variety of tracks on five different planets! Compete for the best times in the high-speed grand prix modes or engage in four-player multiplayer mayhem!

Army Corps of Hell (PSN/Game Card) – A bloodmoon shall rise over battlefields of endless warfare and ritualistic sacrifice when this hellish action game of regimented slaughter invades the PS Vita!

Dynasty Warriors Next (PSN/Game Card)
– Tecmo KOEI’s massive battle franchise Dynasty Warriors comes to the Playstation Vita.

Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack – In Mutant Blobs Attack players take on the role of a twisted mutant blob with a bit of an attitude problem. Players explore, puzzle and platform their way through a world that takes them from the size of a quarter to that of a giant city – devouring everything around them all the while.

Using a range of inputs including touch-based Blob movement and world manipulation controls as well as good old fashioned thumbstick platforming, players will explore a unique gaming experience never before possible.

6891650753_0188bcbdb2_z.jpg

True gaming is reborn on the PlayStation Vita with the launch of A-Men, a riddle within a retro game that will satisfy your cravings for tactical play. With more than a hint of the old school style of logic, platforms and creatures, we think our new, highly addictive title is an unexpected launch in a market dominated by pump-action big titles. Created by Bloober Team and honourably inspired by retro-cult classics Lemmings and Lost Vikings, the game gives you control of up to five army characters, each with their own personalities, skills and tools, whose mission is to round up their equally endearing enemies across a series of worlds and puzzles. Highly tactical and completely addictive, the game is immediately easy to play and yet, like many classic games, it is hard to truly master. You’ll definitely need a brain for this one, folks.

6891650479_bd5225416a_z.jpg

The gameplay takes the player on a journey through a series of different worlds and themes including Forest World, Seacoast World, Winterland World and Factory World. A-Men players use all of their five classes of characters to go up against two types of enemies. The first is a dumb lemming-like character and the second is very smart with the ability to avoid your clever traps. The characters are Spy, Muscleman, Commando, Engineer and Private, but beware of being fooled by their military-sounding names. Each one has their own very distinct personality and unique abilities that more skilled players will delve into to find that they can be combined across characters to ‘power up’ their individual capabilities.

6891649463_91d55f47b0_z.jpg

If you want to change the look of your characters you can even visit clothing stores within the game to change outfits into something you prefer. As you might expect for a brand new game on a new platform, we have made use of the Vita’s astounding technical features, including the possibility to use proximity play with other gamers to exchange items won in the many levels throughout the different Worlds.

6891649781_873cc73ab5_z.jpg

We have also made best use of the OLED screen, action buttons and touch controls of the PS Vita, the only platform with this combination that makes for truly enjoyable, old-school style gameplay. It really shows off the advantage of the PlayStation system over app-based gaming. There’s enough involved to keep you up all night and the cute, well-delivered style makes it worth it. Throw in Trophies available for hardcore enthusiasts and there is something in this game for everyone, and just one of the many reasons why A-Men is going to dominate the forums with players looking for walkthroughs. Like the Rubik’s cube or Tetris, it’s one of those games you get utterly absorbed in but not everyone can master. A-Men has cult classic written all over it.

A-Men will be available from PlayStation Store for PS Vita on 22 February.

Retro City Rampage is Coming to PS Vita and PS3

6908645523_af5f7d5305.jpg

Let’s get right to it — Retro City Rampage is coming to PS3 and PS Vita! I couldn’t be more excited to finally share the news. For those not familiar with RCR, it’s an over-the-top open-world crime game that combines everything you loved in classic games and mashes them up into a “toon town” of nostalgia and parody. Steal cars, and then jump on pedestrians for big shiny coins. Collect power-ups and outrun the law while rampaging the city, shooting a light gun or swinging your bionic arm.

Fans of Grand Theft Auto will feel right at home with RCR, but the missions extend far beyond driving and shooting. They fuse classic gaming and modern mechanics to span virtually every genre, from stealth to platforming, adventure, rhythm and more—there are even underwater levels. What I’m most proud of is that everything flows together using the same mechanics and visuals. Even missions inspired by ’80s coin-op games seamlessly take place in the open-world.

6908644961_1018d84391_z.jpg

It really is a massive game with something for everyone. It boasts a full story mode with over 50 missions, taking place in extensive city with stores, buildings and activities to interact with. For those of you who just want to jump right into the action and rampage the town, there’s also an Arcade Mode. It’s packed with over 30 fast-paced, score-based challenges where you’ll use the 25+ weapons and power-ups available to rack up points. You’ll be able to share replays as you try to dethrone your friends!

wallpaper03_1600x1200-206x300.jpg

Bringing RCR to PlayStation has been a fantastic experience. Sony’s been so supportive and great to work with, since the beginning. This will mark the seventh year since I began developing games for the PlayStation platforms, and I look forward to many more to come. With the ability to bring RCR to both the PS3 and PS Vita, you’ll be able to play the full game anywhere you go with the best possible visuals. The PS Vita is an incredible system, one look at the screen and you’ll be hooked too. It takes RCR’s colorful art direction to the next level.

The PS Vita has been a dream to develop for as well. I’ve developed for every console and handheld from the past decade, and the PS Vita’s development system is the best I’ve ever used. Sony’s simply gotten everything right, from the hardware to the tools and support. With such a great development system, teams are able to focus entirely on making the best possible game, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come from other developers in the future.

6908645259_c95ec575c3_z.jpg

Remember when you were on the playground with your friends as a child, talking about your dream video game? The one that had EVERYTHING in it? Where you could go anywhere and do anything? Well, as you can see, this is my dream game. It’s taken a long time to build, but thanks to the amazing team including myself, Brian Provinciano, artist Maxime Trépanier and the composers Virt, Freaky DNA and Norrin Radd, it’s finally been fully realized and it’s even bigger and better than I first imagined.

So are you rad enough to outrun the law and carjack the ’80s? Then lock and load your LIGHTGUN and power up your POWER-UPS, because you’re about to go on a RETRO CITY RAMPAGE!

Sony confirms Call of Duty for PlayStation Vita this autumn

This autumn's Call of Duty game will also be released on PlayStation Vita, Sony has revealed.
"And of course, in the autumn, [my two teenage sons are] really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and we think that's going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform," Guy Longsworth, senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing, told GameTrailers TV.
The game's full name wasn't revealed, nor was the developer - presumably Treyarch for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. But will the Vita version be the same?
Longsworth went on to commit Sony's top studios to Vita development. This included Naughty Dog, which isn't making Uncharted: Golden Abyss for Vita - Sony Bend is.

"We see this as a five to 10-year platform."
"Absolutely you will [see Naughty Dog on Vita]," confirmed Longsworth. "You'll see a number of games coming out from all of our studios."
And good games are what make Vita stand apart, pitched Longsworth, who's "absolutely" bullish about Vita's potential for global success.
But Vita has struggled to convince Japanese shoppers, and weak weekly sales are dipping.
"If you listen to gamers, and you listen to the response people have had, who've actually got their hands on this thing, it's been just a tremendous response - way ahead of our expectations actually," enthused the ever-grinning Longsworth.
"We see this as a five to 10 year platform, so we'll judge the success of this in 12, 24, 36 months.
"We expect to have a great launch, but it's really in 12 or 24 months we'll know how successful it's been."
PlayStation Vita launches this Wednesday across the UK.

Rumor: Tales of Innocence R headed stateside

Ruca DLC spotted on U.S. PlayStation Store.

Tales fans are on a roll, if a new rumor means anything. GameFAQs user Sora_Hold (via Abyssal Chronicles) discovered an interesting piece of download content available on the U.S. PlayStation Store.

Ruca-Costume-PSStore-600x340.jpg

A “Ruca Previous life Costume,” by publisher “NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc.,” is up on the store, for some reason. Ruca is the main character in PlayStation Vita’s Tales of Innocence R, which came out in Japan late last month. A western localization has yet to be announced.

If anyone has a PS Vita and can check and confirm the item’s availability, let us know in the comments. We’ll contact Namco Bandai for comment.

According to andriasang, the Vita uses Samsung's AMOLED technology. If it was Super AMOLED, it would have the pentile pixel arrangement, and if it was Super AMOLED Plus, it would not have it. According to the picture below of the Vita magnified (not my picture), it shows that it has a traditional RGB pixel arrangement, which means it's likely to be Super AMOLED Plus.

The PlayStation Vita version of Street Fighter x Tekken won't make it out alongside the PS3 and Xbox 360 version on March 8. Capcom said today that Vita owners will have to wait until Fall.

But Vita owners can look forward to some big bonuses. The Vita version will have twelve additional characters. The Street Fighter cast will be updated with Elena, Guy, Cody, Sakura, Dudley and Blanka. The Tekken side will be updated with Alisa, Christie, Jack, Bryan, Lars and Lei.

Unfortunate, Capcom did not share screens of the new cast members today.

Plants vs Zombies for PS Vita Shambles to PSN Today

6917518521_03784f767d_z.jpg

Hello again, PlayStation.Blog fans! I know it’s been over a year since we last spoke, and I am sorry about that. I’ve just been really busy and haven’t had time to write, and I swear I have not been cheating on you with the Xbox blog or anything.
Anyway, now that the awkwardness is out of the way and we’re friends again, I am here to tell you that I have another exciting announcement for you! Plants Vs Zombies is coming to your brand-spankin’ new PS Vita today! Yay! If you have never played our action-puzzler — that pits a horde of horticultural heroes against a mob of fetid, undead, brain-eating zombies – there is no better time than now. The PS Vita version is darn near the most perfect version of Plants Vs Zombies yet, taking advantage of the handheld console’s touchscreen and internal motion sensors. And if you have played it before, well, why not play it again? Think of it as training for the real zombie apocalypse, which, not to be too much of a bummer here, could be coming any day now. Why be one of the unfortunate ones who end up in some undead guy’s brain sandwich? Do the responsible thing and prepare now with our game! Your loved ones will thank you later.

6917518267_9f4f6e4d18_z.jpg

If you want to know what you’re actually getting in this version, which I guess is a reasonable enough question, I can tell you that the PS Vita version includes all of these positively wonderful features:

The complete, classic 50-level adventure game
+ The Zen Garden
+ 20 mini-games
+ 18 puzzle games
+ 10 survival games
+ 43 Trophies, including one Platinum trophy
+ The Zombatar zombie-creation tool
+ Online leaderboards

All for a paltry $14.99!
That’s less than you’d pay at the movie theater for the latest rom-com movie and a bag of popcorn, and you’ll feel less bad afterward! Or, heck, if you must see the new rom-com movie, you can bring the PS Vita with you and then boot up Plants Vs Zombies once you realize the mistake you made! Either way, it seems like you should get the game, if you ask me.

6917518197_6c4d63a141_z.jpg

So download Plants Vs Zombies from the PlayStation Network today! Do it for humanity! And the plants! And for those of us at PopCap who have kids going to college! Don’t make us beg! Because we will if we have to! Enjoy the game! Bye!
