Tak Hirai was the main programmer on Shenmue and also worked on such classics as Space Channel 5 and Meteos. In September of 2010, he formed his own development outfit, Neilo.
The first major release from Neilo has been revealed in this week's Famitsu. Hirai will be trying out rhythm gaming again through a PlayStation Vita game called "Orgarhythm." The game will be released this summer through Acquire.
Orgarhythm is actually a new type of game that blends strategy and music. What that means isn't clear at present. According to Sinobi, which gets Famitsu in advance, Hirai explained to Famitsu that it's rare nowadays to see a game that's so difficult to understand. The game is so different that there were a variety of reactions even internally at Neilo.
We have just one gameplay bit: the game will have cooperative and competitive multiplayer play.

Here are a bunch of event scene videos from Persona 4 The Golden. The game's official site was updated with the clips today.
Famitsu.com has shared our first screens of Orgarhythm, the first major game release from Neilo, a new studio formed by Shenmue main programmer Tak Hirai.
Orgarhythm blends strategy and rhythm gameplay. You play as a god and defeat enemies by issuing well-timed commands, to fire people, water people and earth people. The game starts off with a bass track, but as you issue commands, more and more tracks are added, until you reach a total of five tracks.
You'll have access to over 100 skills (what these are used for isn't clear at present). Other mysterious elements include "Influence Map" and "Heat Map." These appear to involve the enemy AI remembering how you defeated them, and selecting a different attack route the next time you play.
The game will have a multiplayer component, with 1 to 2 player co-op and competitive support via ad-hoc.
Orgarhythm will be released in the summer, priced ¥3,990 at retail. Pricing for the game's download version is TBA.
Visit the newly opened Orgarhythm official site for some music samples from Neilo and Acquire's new PlayStation Vita rhythm strategy game. Be sure and click on the lady's parts for some interesting effects.
It may be early early Sunday, but somebody is working at Sony Computer Entertainment. The PlayStation official site was updated with a bunch of new product announcements.
New Hot Shots games are on the way. Here's first artwork for Everbody's Kabaddi, Everbody's Gateball and Everybody's Sumo.
While we're still waiting for the Gravity Rush maid outfit, Sony has released two previously unannounced outfits. See Kat in an Onion Dress and Meat Dress here:
Finally, the long awaited Reality Fighters movie conversion. The movie will have a moving story focusing on high school student Kitaon, who meets a karate master and gains strength through training. The entire movie is presented in Augmented Reality.
The Vita version of Mortal Kombat, complete with 150 new Vita-centric Challenge Tower missions, touchscreen fatalities and the console version's DLC characters, will be available in North American on May 1.
Seeing as Mortal Kombat is part of the official EVO 2012 tournament selection, this may be a good way to squeeze in every possible second of combo practice during your daily routine. It's also a much cleaner, less illegal way to murder people while on crowded public transportation.
Sony is sweetening the deal on its ¥2,000 PlayStation Vita discount campaign. A retailer is reporting that the campaign, which was originally scheduled to end at the end of March has been extended. Additionally, Sony will be throwing in a free 4 gigabyte memory card.
The fine print remains the same. The deal applies only to those who buy a 3G model and at least one game. Meet these conditions, and you'll get ¥2,000 off and a free 4 Gig card at point of sale.
Sony never made official announcement of the original ¥2,000 promotion, but it was put in place at numerous retailers large and small.
It looks like the Gravity Rush Meat and Onion download costumes that Sony announced yesterday were just cruel April Fools' Day jokes.
But the real Gravity Rush download content is almost as sexy as Kat covered in steaks.
Sony today provided a first look at the game's previously announced Maid outfit.
Free-to-play gaming on PlayStation Vita is off to somewhat of a bumpy start. Sega announced today that it will be temporarily halting service on Samurai & Dragons in order to address network issues.
Samurai & Dragons was released for PlayStation Vita on March 29. The game uses a free-to-play model, meaning the client download and basic play are free.
Since release, the game has been having network issues, with users unable to login and connect for play sessions. Today, Sega said that addressing these issues and adding new servers to the game will take time, so they have decided to block service until April 17. The game's client will also be unavailable for download until then.
PlayStation Vita's firmware was updated to version 1.65 today. As detailed at the Vita official site, the update adds the following:
*Toggle notifications on and off from the sound and display settings menu. If on, the system will alert you when new stuff arrives.
*You can set Auto Standby to 10 minutes
*When you have new activities, the game's Live Arena area will show this via an orange arrow.
*Bug fixes for Unit 13 and Dynasty Warriors Next
*Depending on the language, you can double tap shift to set the input to caps lock. To cancel caps lock, press shift once more.
PlayStation Vita got a bit more social today with the release of apps for two major social networks. Vita owners in Japan can download Facebook and Foursquare apps via PlayStation Store. Like other Vita apps, these two are free.
The apps make use of the PlayStation Vita's special capabilities. The Facebook app lets you scroll the screen via the rear touch pad, meaning you won't have to obstruct your view to scroll. The app can also post pics from your camera and screenshots that you've taken of games. The Foursquare app makes use of Vita's positional capabilities.
Here's a higher resolution version of the Orgarhythm concept video that we posted earlier in the day.
Konami won't be offering a special Metal Gear Solid themed PlayStation Vita to commemorate the release of Metal Gear Solid HD on the system. But early buyers will get the next best thing.
The Vita version will include a Raiden and Snake protection skin. The skin covers both the system's screen and body. It also includes a matching wallpaper.
Buy the game at Konami Style, and you'll get another bonus: a matching cleaning cloth.
Sony’s pushed out yet another PS Vita firmware update following yesterday’s removal of the bug-ridden 1.65, which prevented adhoc functionality from working properly in emulated PSP titles.
The update is now available worldwide via Network Update.
Sony has quickly yanked PS Vita firmware 1.65, deployed last night on Network Update, over an undisclosed ‘technical fault.’ An update issued through the PS Blog indicates users that already downloaded and installed the update can continue to use their Vita – so be rest assured that it’s not going to explode.
“PS Vita system software update 1.65 has been taken down temporarily due to a technical fault. For any customers who may have already downloaded the firmware, they can continue as normal. We will notify you once the latest system software update is available to download again,” reads the statement.
Given its large size for a minor update, there has been speculation that 1.65 contained some hidden security patches. Perhaps something was botched in that regard, who knows? At least there hasn’t been any reports of bricked Vita units over this mishap.
Famitsu.com has a new batch of screenshots from Persona 4 The Golden. The screens show:
*The "Programming Schedule," which gets additional content as you advance in the game. From here, you can enjoy the game's BGM, anime sequences and illustrations.
*Cards that you trade with other players when using the game's wireless features. You can create your own card in the Velvet Room.
*Evolved forms of Personas Kuma and Naoto.
Sega is bringing Hatsune Miku to the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3. Sinobi, which has early access to Weekly Famitsu, has first details from the magazine.
Currently operating under the placeholder name of Next Hatsune Miku Project Diva, the new game will retain the basic gameplay systems from the previous Miku games. However, there will be some new elements, including touch controls (apparently referred to as "scratch") and a new technical element where you receive bonuses by connecting combos in a specified time limit. The game will have four difficulty settings.
Vocaloids shown in Famitsu include Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin, Kagamine Len, Megurine Luka, Kaito and Meiko. Songs include World's End Dance Hall (wowaka), Pieretta (nezuki) and Cat Food (Doriko). Modules (these are sort of like costumes) include Hatsune Miku Emerald and Megurine Luka Ruby.
The game is being developed by the staff that worked on the PSP and arcade Hatsune Miku games. A release is planned for Vita this summer and PS3 in 2013. Sinobi's report isn't clear on if the two games will have any differences.
We should be getting lots of details shortly. Sega will open an official site for the game tomorrow. The Vita version will be going playable at Nico Nico's "Chokaigi" event on the 28th and 29th at Makuhari Messe. Details on the playable showing will be posted at this special PlayStation.com site that opens tomorrow.
