I finally received a Beta invite to Diablo III however tonight's server maintenance for Battle.net means I can't play tonight so instead I thought I'd share how to extract the music from MPQ files for Diablo III. My initial interest is of course listening to the awesome music composed by Russell Brower who has from what I've heard thus far has been able to really honor some of the Wagnerian style music Diablo II fans are familiar with from Act V. While I'll have a copy of the soundtrack when I purchase the Diablo III Collector's Edition generally the problem with scores (which are very commonly incorrectly referred to as soundtracks) is that they are incomplete if they are even released.
To extract the music from Diablo III Beta you first obviously need a copy of the Diablo III beta and secondly you need a copy of WinMPQ by ShadowFlare. When you have WinMPQ the quickest way to find the music is to use the filter *ogg or *.ogg which then removes all the other file types. Keep in mind that these files range in the several hundred megabyte range and seem to contain a few hundred if not a couple thousand files each; my Phenom II processor opened the largest files in a little less than half a minute. There are two MPQ files that the music can be found in at the time of this blog post. The first is the more obvious, Diablo III Beta\Data_D3\PC\MPQs\Sound.mpq with an internal path of SoundBank\Music\ and other secondary directories with names that start with music. The second and much less obvious file is Diablo III Beta\Data_D3\PC\MPQs\base\d3-update-base-7728.MPQ with an internal path of \SoundBank\Music_Actx_TitleCredits and again there are other secondary directories with names that start with music.
Again I haven't been able to play the game much though what I have played thus far really impresses me save for the limited number of skills that you can use at any given time however it does increase as you initially level. There is a lot of opportunity for Blizzard to either execute Diablo just right or to goof stuff up; I'd prefer to wait a couple extra months for Blizzard to polish things up as The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim's main quest line can't be finished without cheating in example even if you have the first two patches installed. There are a lot of placeholder sounds inside of the MPQ files and it's clear that with such a huge number of asset files just for Act I alone that I seriously think Diablo III will dwarf Diablo II in regards to the amount of content. The graphics are absolutely gorgeous adhering to the dark fantasy and Gothic themes while not feeling very cartoony. I'm excited about the initial release of Diablo III and I'll try to update this blog entry when it does.
