PS Vita “not powerful enough” for Metal Gear Rising, says creative producer

Vita-Rising-Not-Powerful.jpg

Because PS3, 360 versions "pushing consoles to their limits."

Kojima Productions has been pretty on about its Transfarring system, lately. It enables PlayStation 3 and PS Vita to work together using cross-platform saves, allowing you to continue your game at home or on the go. So why isn’t the company’s latest game, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, coming to the handheld? Creative producer Yuji Korekado has your answer.

“Of course, we would like to [create a PlayStation Vita version of the game],” said Korekado to Gamers.de at Gamescom, “but unfortunately Metal Gear Rising is already pushing the consoles to their limits and the PlayStation Vita simply is not powerful enough for this game.”

Metal Gear Rising is due for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013.

Little Big Planet doesnt just work on the Vita Hardware, it's improved by it

lbpvita.jpg

[spoil]Welcome home, Sackboy: LittleBigPlanet is improved by the Vita hardware

I wrote that portable hardware acts as a frame in my 3DS XL review, and that frame provides the context for the software we play. I didn’t realize how true that was until I began experimenting with the LittleBIgPlanet beta on the PlayStation Vita. To my surprise, the hardware provides the perfect frame for that particular title. Both the hardware and the software are improved when they fit together this seamlessly, and that relationship becomes clear once you begin experimenting with the content creation tools, using all the advantages of the Vita hardware. LittleBigPlanet has long offered handheld world building, but it has been improved tremendously since the PlayStation Portable version of the game

I love the future.
Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, Sackboys gotta sit and wonder why, why, why

LittleBigPlanet was always an attractive game, but the graphics themselves weren’t hardware intensive; you’d be hard-pressed to point out differences between the console LittleBigPlanet titles and this latest portable version. In fact, the Vita LittleBigPlanet features three planes of depth to each level, matching the console versions and improving on the PSP’s two planes.

LittleBigPlanet has always enjoyed experimenting with the accessories available for the PlayStation 3. You could take pictures of yourself or real-world objects with the PlayStation Eye camera and use them to create new stickers or decorate your levels, and a level pack added support for the PlayStation Move, but all of these fun distractions required expensive and unevenly supported peripherals. How many LittleBigPlanet fans out there had the Eye and a Move controller? This content would always be an afterthought, as there would only be a slight percentage of players who could take advantage of all these neat additions.

The Vita is a self-contained piece of hardware with a wealth of tools: touch, movement, and even camera support are all a given. Better yet, the Vita features both front and rear touchscreens, which conceptually mimic the three-plane design of LittleBigPlanet levels. You touch the rear of the system to move objects towards the camera, you touch the front screen to push objects back, and your Sackboy can manipulate objects in the middle plane. These interactions are a wonderful fusion of game design and hardware capabilities, and they work flawlessly. You know what you have to do without being told, although the Stephen Fry-voiced tutorials in the early levels are helpful.

The ability to use pictures you take as textures for stickers and objects is also here, and the front and rear-facing cameras on the Vita make this simple. You needed to get things close to the Eye camera that was attached to your system to take advantage of this feature on the PlayStation 3 LittleBigPlanet titles, and that was hardly optimal. The Vita is a portable system; it’s simple to turn on the front-facing camera, take a quick picture of your own silly face, and use it on a level. If your children are making a level designed to look like your back yard they can take the entire system outside to snap pictures of grass, your house, or even bugs to make the level look authentic. Your Vita is now a portable texture generator.

The same holds true for audio; you can use the Vita’s built-in microphone to record your own voice or sound effects to be used during level creation. Touch controls also make the level creation tools easier, although anyone who would like to create anything serious will either need to have learned their skills in previous games or sit through a seemingly never-ending line of tutorials. While the content creation tools in LittleBigPlanet may be simple in that anyone can use them, there is no method for creating levels that is easy. Creating something of worth is always going to take hard work and time, the tools on the Vita will get you to the design stages of content creation relatively quickly.

The game may only be in beta, but there is already a wonderful supply of user-created levels and games to experiment with, some of which bend the original platforming action and rules of LittleBigPlanet until they’re unrecognizable. The content creation tools included here don’t just allow you to make new levels, they also allow you to make entirely new games. With a little patience and focus, anyone who is old enough to read the text will be able to get to work creating their own levels to play and share. If you’re an adult and simply want to experiment with game or level design, this is a solid way to start. While accomplishing each individual step may be simple, creating something of real worth is hard, and after the first few hours you’ll gain a new respect for people who do this for a living, and do it well.
The hardware is an extension of the software

None of this is news if you’ve played any of the previous LittleBigPlanet games, but sitting in front of your display with a PlayStation 3 and a controller designing a new level could almost feel like work. The Vita version frees you from that feeling. Being able to take out your Vita on a plane, in a doctor’s office, or on a long bus ride and chip away at your new level is magical. The idea that you can create a new world anywhere in your own world is borderline fantastical, and using the touch screen to edit and add items in your level creates a deeper connection between you and the game. That level of interaction wasn’t possible in the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet, as the Vita is packed with tools and hardware that can be used to create instead of just consume, and those abilities fit in perfectly with the whimsical theme of the game. The hardware allows you to feel lyrical, not mechanical.

Players no longer have to block out long chunks of time to create a level. Now you can use the Vita as a virtual scratch pad, an object that allows you to be creative wherever you find yourself. The hardware aids the software tools and allows you to create sounds, images, and interactions fluidly. While many Vita games seem to force touch controls on the player just because they can, LittleBigPlanet comes alive on the Vita hardware, and is improved by it.

Combined with the already launched Sound Shapes, LittleBigPlanet is proving that a portable game console can aid your creativity in a way that makes sense, and is helped along by its hardware. It’s not often you get to carry a creator of worlds in your pocket.

LittleBigPlanet will be released on the PlayStation Vita on September 25. [/spoil]

Dust 514 Neocom Vita App Promises “MMO on the go”

7823505578_950ea67a04_z.jpg

Looking for a little more depth from your FPS? Hugely ambitious free-to-play sci-fi shooter Dust 514 might be just the ticket. CCP‘s PlayStation 3 exclusive sits alongside its enormously popular PC space MMO Eve Online, with players’ actions in one game directly affecting the environment in the other. See our recent post from the Icelandic developer for more on exactly how this plays out.

7823505710_65c0a607bf_z.jpg

The third string to the whole intriguing project is Dust 514 Neocom – a companion PS Vita app that lets you interact with various systems from the PlayStation 3 game directly from your handheld. In search of a little more information on exactly how it works, we collared CCP Creative Director Atli Mars Sveinsson and Marketing Director Cameron Payne at last week’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany.

“It’s a companion app to the PS3 game,” explains Payne. “It brings all the customisation, community and commerce features onto the Vita. There’s no direct gameplay but you can use pretty much all the features that the Neocom user interface offers in the main game.

“You can interact with battles, purchase items on the market, play around with your dropsuit or vehicle and then save it so you can use it on PS3.”

A quick hands-on session with the app demostrated just how much functionality CCP has managed to squeeze in. Players will have access to the complete Fittings system – allowing you to tinker with your weapon load-outs, armour and various vehicle configurations. And as Eve afficionados will likely be well aware, this is almost a game unto itself, with thousands and thousands of different combinations available.

On top of that, the game’s store is fully accessible from the Vita app, complete with daily deals and special offers, while the in-game mail and social features are also present and correct. Not only that, but you can also navigate around the Eve universe’s enormous galaxy map – a feature which CCP plans to build upon further down the road.

7823505412_8b121100d1_z.jpg

“There’s the galaxy of Eve in real time on your Vita,” says Sveinsson proudly, zooming in and out by pinching the Vita’s touch screen. “700 solar systems and you can drill down and look at the individual planets. Over time we’d like you to be able to tinker with those planets and manage their surface infrastructure.”

Those who don’t own a Vita won’t be missing out on anything – all these features exist in the PS3 game – but, for a game as potentially as absorbing as Dust, it should offer a compelling way to stay connected to the game when you’re out and about.

“There are so many parts of Dust 514 that you can take with you and don’t need a PS3 to enjoy, and this was the perfect way to exploit those features,” adds Sveinsson. “The whole PlayStation ecosystem works really well, allowing these systems to connect and be a nice cohesive experience. It’s MMO on the go.”

Stay tuned to PlayStation Blog for more on Dust 514 ahead of the game’s launch later this year.

10 things you need to know about Tearaway

screenshot-01.png

[spoil]
Discover some vital details about the exclusive PS Vita game on everybody's lips at gamescom 2012.

LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule surprised everyone at gamescom 2012 with the announcement of Tearaway on PlayStation Vita. We sat down with the team behind this special looking game to find out more.

  • Bringing paper to life

The world of Tearaway isn't flat - it's a 3D universe made entirely out of paper and brought to life. "It's sometimes fragile and always magical," explains Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule. "And it has all sorts of surprises. Paper is amazing - you can tell stories with it, fold it, draw on it... and it's perfect for PlayStation Vita."

  • Only on PS Vita

Media Molecule wanted to create a game which would be unique in both the way it played and how it made use of the PS Vita system's features. So the team gathered into a room and pitched ideas to each other, keeping the ones which were the best and felt most natural to the system. The result is something you won't be able to play anywhere else. "We wanted to create a game that only works on PS Vita," says Mark Healey, creative director and co-founder. "So we took the features of the system and aimed to make great use of them."

  • Unfolding Tearaway

Media Molecule's amazing looking action adventure is about a messenger from another dimension called Iota - and he's got a message specifically for you. Trapped in the craft-like world of Tearaway, you have to guide him from there to the real world to deliver his message. "We've taken the traditional adventure platformer and given it a Media Molecule twist," says Dave Smith, co-founder and technical director. "When Iota is too weak to deal with something, we give you - the player - the connection with this fragile paper style world."

  • Bringing worlds together

An important message behind Tearaway is merging and crossing over the real world with the game world, with the PS Vita system's unique features such as the touchscreen and rear touch pad acting as the connection. So blowing or shouting into the microphone affects the world in Tearaway, turning the PS Vita system upside down will make things fall in the game world and so on.

"When you play games you sometimes tilt the controller unconsciously to dodge out of the way of things," says Dave. "So we wanted to take those physical movements and make them into gameplay. You're not just tapping at the screen to have a subtle effect on it - you're literally shaking the world and shouting at it and your fingers are grasping in there and destroying it."

screenshot-05.png

"We wanted to find ways to use these features that felt natural and made sense," says Mark. "So things like drumming your fingers on the rear touch pad can help Iota bounce up to places. And I really love poking your fingers into the world of Tearaway. There are a lot of gameplay elements that come from that which we didn't really show in the trailer; for example, the zoom of the camera on the screen affects the size of your finger, so it could be the size of a mountain or a tiny tree stump. "

  • Reality bends at your fingertips

As you progress through Tearaway, you unlock physical paper trophies that are emailed to you, which you can then print out and use in the real world. This creates unique possibilities rarely seen in video games. "These little items are things you've customised in the game," says Mark. "So you can create something in Tearaway, have it printed out in the real world, draw on it, then recapture it using the PS Vita camera and put it back into the game."

  • Iota and you

Tearaway isn't so much about you being Iota - even though you control the cute messenger, you're acting as a partner to his adventure, helping him along the way and interacting with the world around him. "We like to think of it as a buddy game, between you - the player - and Iota," says Alex.

screenshot-03.jpg

  • The best postman ever

Wondering how unique Iota's message to you is? "It's tailored to how you play the game," says Mark. "So if there will be as many unique messages out there as there are people playing the game!"

  • Smile with Media Molecule

Like LittleBigPlanet, there will be moments of wackiness and humour throughout Tearaway. From little paper cyclops to multi-coloured elks, Media Molecule likes to have a laugh. "We're not afraid to get a little silly," smiles Mark. "We're making games, after all!" agrees Dave.

screenshot-04.png

  • What's in a name?

Tearaway is an incredibly fitting name for the action adventure, although it was only chosen a week or so before gamescom 2012. "When we were putting the game together, we named it after the room, which was The Treehouse," explains Mark. "Then we named it after the team working on it, which was Sandpit. After that it was called Uncovery. We also had some hilarious names suggested for it, like Pokey World."

Tearaway's hero, Iota, also went through a few different names. "We can't say what they were though," says Dave. "We may want to use those for other projects!"

  • Size doesn't matter

The team on Tearaway currently consists of 15 people. To give you a sense of scale, some development studios have departments that are bigger than Tearaway's whole team, and true to Media Molecule's style, they've created a game which has charmed virtually anyone who has seen it.

"We're really proud we can create the sort of games that fit this lean company and I think that's what makes for a very distinctive flavour of games," says Dave.

Additional Street Fighter X Tekken Vita features

4687135870d09e8ffc0c48a14884353a.jpg

I'm sure you've all seen the GamesCom SFxT Vita information video... we've got more info for ya! Also, the aforementioned video can be found right here.

Check out below some of the new features, such as Ghost Tag and Swap Switch!

1579bda6196878f13baf58a4b0fa9c75.jpg

See the icon next to the name? That's the Ghost Tag indicator

Burst Kumite (Ghost Tag)

So you're tired of Arcade mode, but you're out of wi-fi range or 3G data to go online. Here's the next best thing: you can go on Ghost Tag and fight CPU teams based on opponents you've encountered online! Of course, this is not an offline-only mode - you can still activate your Fight Request and jump right into a real online battle when an opponent is found.

7778b4e8a85602e0e77ef3b17a0277bf.jpg

Swap Switch

This is quite an interesting feature... You know when you go to a clothing store and you try out that shirt before you buy it. Sometimes you don't even buy it. Well, this is almost like that. You see someone online with an awesome outfit - it could be an alternate DLC costume, a cool color scheme or even a Gem load out; then you go to Ghost Tag and when you fight that opponent (and lose) you can switch to their team. That's right, you get to control their team and try it out all their awesome customized goodies!

cf5617fd328c45fd4caf2b8c5e716621.jpg

Custom Data Sharing

This is straight-forward, but still very useful: if you use the same PSN account on both your PS3 and PS Vita, things like DLC, gems, quick combos and other personalized content will be synced between the two systems.

07c0f76c9a14e48e61c47d552aaa83fa.jpg

Gallery

Another simple, yet essential feature: here you can view in-game movies, listen to the game's music, sound effects, voice recordings and even play around with AR renders of the characters.

881b956dbd5ad292a5f6677feff44651.jpg

Activity
Want to keep track of your in-game progress and activity? Want to show that off to your rivals? That's what the Activity feature is for. You can share things like your game play history, progress, store purchases and status information, and have your friends comment on it through the PS Vita.

9e3172bac3d55f07c4bad1f889443046.jpg

K.O. Monument

We've talked about this before, so it's more of a recap here. When you win battles online, you can collect these "trophy"-esque statues of your opponent, displaying whatever outfit they (not the person... the character, obviously) were wearing at that time.

So that's it for now. Like I said before, there's more info in the video. I'll be making more use out of the first two (Ghost Tag and Swap Switch); but I know some of you are into showing off your victories and costumes, so we've got those features just for you.

Kadokawa's Project Discovery For PlayStation Vita Resurfaces

2461x.jpg

One of the more mysterious announcements from Sony's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven "event" was Project Discovery, a PlayStation Vita title from Kadokawa Games. The project resurfaced in Famitsu this week, with a few hints at what we can expect.

Project Discovery will gather scenarios, character designs, voice, music and other areas of content from users. It will assemble all these materials into visual novels and distribute the results via PlayStation Store.

The resulting games will make use of a new PlayStation Vita visual novel engine called the "Discovery Engine." This is being developed by Sony Computer Entertainment and Kadokawa. Discovery Engine's goal is to allow for the creation of a "smart novel" which is somewhere between a game and a book.

In the future, Sony and Kadokawa hope to give users a development environment so that they can make their own visual novels, but for now Project Discovery involves users submitting their content to be professionally assembled into a final product and released through PSN.

An official site for Project Discovery will open later this month and will begin taking submissions from users. Submissions will be accepted through early December. Selected items will be announced in Spring 2013. A "pilot" episode will be released to PSN in Summer 2013.

Ys Celceta Sea of Trees: Magic Tools and Touch-based Camera Controls

This week's Ys Celceta Sea of Trees screenshot update has a look at the game's "magic tool" system.

Magic tools are special items that you'll find during your travels. Here are some examples:

The Dwarf Ring, which makes you small, allowing you to enter passages that would normally be inaccessible:

The Gale Boots, which let you dash by pressing X, allowing you to traverse special slopes and walls:

The Seima Collar, which turns you into a beast, allowing you to speak to the "residents" of the Sea of Trees:

Falcom also revealed that the game will have touch-based camera controls. Using pinch in and pinch out, you can zoom in and out of the action.

There have been hints that a title on the Wii U would make use of CryEngine 3, but nobody was really sure which title that would be.
Now, we may finally have an answer… as well as another FPS coming to the Vita.
The ESRB has updated its page on Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 to include the Wii U and the Vita as release platforms.

This is intriguing in two ways. First of all, it explains the game's ongoing delays; porting a game to more platforms is going to add development time, especially for quality assurance. Secondly, it explains which CryEngine 3 game would be coming to the Wii U. Although it certainly leaves the door open for other projects.
Our Take: Personally, we find this game arriving on the Vita to be a bit more relevant than the Wii U arrival. It's fairly clear the Wii U can handle pretty much any current-gen game coming out; it doesn't make sense for publishers to leave money on the table.

The Vita port, though, is what we think is the real story. As we've noted before, the Vita has a dearth of first-person shooters that Sony is only now acting to redress. As far as we can tell, this is the first game for the Vita to use CryEngine 3, although we know it can run on mobile platforms.
If this port goes smoothly, it may pave the way for more console games to be ported to the Vita. We'll be looking with interest to see how it compares to the other versions of the game.

Ayano: "Converting PS3 games to PS Vita is a very smooth process"

Street Fighter X Tekken PS Vita producer Tomoaki Ayano reveals his thoughts on PS Vita development, and claims that PS Vita is a ver powerful machine, more details inside........

In an interview when asked about porting Street Fighter X Tekken from PS3 to PS Vita Tomoaki Ayano replied with:
Converting Street Fighter X Tekken from the PS3 to the PS Vita was a very smooth process actually.
The PS Vita is an extremely powerful piece of hardware, so it wasn't all that difficult. However, maximising the power of the system was something that really took some effort.
Ultimately, though, we were able to achieve a stable 60 frames per second, making it a true fighting game experience. Japanese people are really good at taking big things and shrinking them down.
I can promise you that the PS Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken will satisfy everyone out there.

PlayStation Vita update locks memory cards to PSN accounts

There's a bonus feature for PlayStation Vita owners who have updated to the system's new firmware: Sony has locked memory cards to specific PlayStation Network accounts.

Gamers were previously able to switch PSN accounts via the slightly cumbersome process of "restoring" the system.

Now, those with content from multiple accounts or multiple regions will have to buy another memory card or lose their data.

One way to separate your content onto several memory cards is to copy it back to a PlayStation 3, NeoGAF users reported. But those with only one Vita memory card handy will need to go shopping first.

It's a problem that will hit users who have accounts on multiple PlayStation Stores - useful as not all content is released in all regions.

The move comes at an especially bad time - Sony has just enabled PSone game support for the Vita. Those who bought titles using a different PSN account to their handheld's will also need to juggle memory cards.
