Kaz Yamauchi talks PS4 Gran Turismo
According to Yamauchi PS3 was, “a combination of a poor GPU with an SPU that’s really fast if you use it right”. Because of that, he describes the console as, “not a very well-balanced machine,” and said it was, “hard to use the hardware properly”. It’s these technical kinks he claims were, “one reason why it took us five years to develop GT5″.
At the same time though he does add that if you can use the SPUs properly then you can apparently work wonders. For example GT 6 uses Adaptive Tessellation, a form of rendering Yamauchi explains is, “the kind of technology that you normally wouldn’t be able to do unless you were on the PS4-generation of machines. When you optimize the use of the SPU properly, you can do that even on the PS3″. He also points out that, “Gran Turismo is one of the only games on the PS3 that does 1080p at 60 frames per second”.
Speaking about the future Yamauchi says, “once everyone has played out Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 we are thinking about a PS4 game”. In the same way Polyphony, “really pushed the limits of PS3 as far as it can go,” the next-gen GT will also, “be testing the limits of PS4″. According to the studio head, “The PS4 isn’t as off-balance as the PS3 was. On the PS4, the lowest common denominator is going to be boosted. Most games will be able to do 1080p at 60 frames per second. That’s the real good part about PS4″.
Managing Director at Guerrilla Games Hermen Hulst has revealed some interesting new details about the upcoming PlayStation 4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall. Besides featuring bigger maps and huge set pieces along with a “more tactical gameplay on top of that.”
He also stated that the game will make use of the DualShock 4 gamepad including the touch pad which lets you control an AI companion. “We have this robotic companion that helps you out and gives you an attack mode that lets you zip-line across the map, et cetera. So we’ll use the touchpad to control that.”
There will also be a use for the speaker on the DualShock 4, along with the headset jack. Perhaps a way to issue orders to your AI companion or listen in for additional info? We’ll soon find out.
Killzone: Shadow Fall will be heading to the PlayStation 4 this Holiday season along with DriveClub, Knack, PlanetSide 2 and Watch_Dogs among others.

PlayStation 4 exclusive character-action game Knack is ten hours long, director Mark Cerny has said.
“It’s not apparent from the E3 demo, but [Knack] is a very story driven adventure,” Cerny told IGN. “The first time through should take about ten hours, and then we have included a lot of features that make it interesting to play again.”
The game, which looks like a cross between Crash Bandicoot, God of War and Katamari Damcy, will feature “hundreds of secret rooms” full of treasure chests, and other secrets like gadgets and crystal relics designed to power up Knack. The team behind it has worked on games like Shadow of the Colossus, Ape Escape, and God of War III.
Knack will launch alongside PlayStation 4 this holiday.
Yesterday, Mark Cerny talked about the PS4’s creation and one of his focus points was “time-to-triangle”, the time it takes a developer to create the base for a game that matches the hardware’s graphical power. The PS1’s time-to-triangle was 1-2 months, the PS2 was 3-6 and the difficult-to-develop-for PS3 took 6-12.
The problems with the PS3 crippled its developer support, caused third parties to hate making games for it, titles to be visibly worse and costs to spiral. Worse, it constrained innovation.
The PS4’s time-to-triangle is, apparently, 1-2 months. Not only will that be great for dev costs, it will allow for experimentation with gameplay ideas at a far earlier stage, meaning that innovation can be a lot cheaper, and risks will be a lot less. This is important to the industry, and how it evolves. Talking about specs and games is not a mutually exclusive topic, one helps lead to the other.
