Goku to use new form against Golden Frieza in film opening on April 18
This year's 20th issue of
Shueisha's
Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is revealing on Monday that Goku will enter a new Super Saiyan God form in the upcoming
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'(Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F) film. The announcement also reveals that Goku will use the "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan" (Super Saiyan God SS) form to fight Frieza's new golden
form.
In the new form, Goku's hair stands on end just like with Super Saiyan 1 or 2, but his hair turns blue and looks like a blue flame.
Goku originally entered into the Super Sayan God form in the
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods film, but in that form his hair became red.
Additionally, the same issue of Weekly Shonen Jump is revealing that Goku's new form will beplayable in the
Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden
Nintendo 3DS game. Those who see the film or who use the a code with the June issue of
V Jump will get early access to a demo version of the game, and the demo will include Goku's new form. The game
ships in Japan on June 11.
In commemoration of the new film,
Fuji TV will screen the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods film on April 17 at 9:00 p.m. Additionally, theaters in 11 cities in Japan are rescreening the film until April 17.
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' will
premiere in both 2D and 3D in theaters across Japan on April 18, although advance screenings will be
held before then. The film will also be the first Japanese film to
open in 3D IMAX Digital Theaters.
Funimation will
host the North American premiere on April 11 in Los Angeles. The company then plans to release the film in more theaters with an English dub this summer.
Toriyama
said in an interview in November that the 'F' in the film's title stands for "Frieza," who will be revived in the film. Toriyama noted that he thought of the title while listening to "F" by rock band
Maximum The Hormone, whom he came to know personally through a friend. The song itself features Frieza as a motif, and will be used as a "battle song" during one of the battle scenes in the film. The band originally released the song as its eighth single in July 2008.
Toriyama is personally credited with the original concept, screenplay, and character designs of the new movie. Dragon Ball Z animation director
Tadayoshi Yamamuro is
directing the new movie. Pop idol group
Momoiro Clover Z (
Sailor Moon Crystal,
Bodacious Space Pirates) is
performing the film's theme song, as well as
voicing roles in the movie, playing "angels" of hell that reside where the protagonist Son Goku's enemy Frieza has been imprisoned.
