This is (Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely)’s first time also writing Iron Man’s character, and I’m a huge fan of the Iron Man films but here I believe we get a whole new and deeper glimpse into Tony Stark. The result is Robert Downey Jr.’s best performance so far in the role (and, alongside the underrated emotional gut-punch The Judge, among his very best of the past decade), bringing everything we already know and love about the character while adding far more drama and desperation to the mix.

Even better is Robert Downey Jr, who shows a different side to Tony Stark. “You’re being surprisingly non-hyper-verbal,” Black Widow quips. It’s a wittier riposte than anything Tony musters in the entire film. He’s less the swaggering snark merchant of movies past here and more the elder statesman, reflecting on the consequences of his actions and looking to make amends. “I’m trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart,” he pleads. The brilliance of Downey Jr’s sympathetic performance is that even if you’re staunchly Team Cap you still feel for him.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. have never been better in their respective roles as Captain America and Iron Man. Evans performance is a little more subtle as he’s truly conflicted about the decision he’s making and the inevitable fight he will have to endure against his friends. Meanwhile, Downey has never been so reserved in his performance as Stark, who finally takes into account the weight of being a hero and the loss of life that can occur from his actions. While the funny quips are there every now and then, Stark has never been given such emotional complexity as he truly regrets having to beat the hell out of Steve Rogers, and faces the fruits of his superhero labor in more ways than one.

I think Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Iron Man is one of the greatest pieces of superhero casting of all time. There is no doubt in my mind that Marvel owes an eternal debt to Downey for what he did to bring the character to life, and that Downey owes them equally for betting big on him after his earlier public turbulence. The work he does here is refined and honest and more emotional than he’s been in earlier films. This has all taken a huge toll on Tony. If there’s ever been a perfect moment for Demon In A Bottle to really work, this is it … After all, Iron Man 3 was essentially a film about a superhero dealing with the PTSD that comes with saving the world from an alien invasion. Since that moment, Tony’s been trying to get out of the Iron Man suit for good. It’s the impulse that led to the disastrous events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and this time, Tony’s ready to hand over the responsibility for his actions and for all the people they couldn’t save to anyone else. He can’t take any more blood on his hands. He can’t take failing his friends again. And when Captain America refuses to go along with the Sokovia Accords, refuses to register as a superpowered being who will only act on the sanctioned word of the US government, it is shocking to him … Tony has become what he thought Steve would want him to be, and it’s upsetting to him to be left holding this particular bag.

Also, Captain America: Civil War could also feature one of the best performances from Robert Downey Jr. in the series yet. He’s solid throughout, but the film’s final few scenes show off the talent of this supremely gifted actor, a performance that harks back to the stunning work that he put out in the early 1990s (we’re thinking Chaplin, Short Cuts etc). He’s fantastic in this.

Downey has been accused of mugging in the past, but here he’s energetically on point as a master of the universe who’s been brought down a peg since the last episode. It’s Tony who features in the film’s best scenes, including a clever, CGI-enhanced flashback that’s staged not just with technical skill, but mournfully authentic emotion.
