#1 Meulel [17.11.2011]
Today I embarked on my 1000 Strangers project. It is my very first experiment doing some kind of photo project, so i was really excited about this.
But turned out, asking a complete stranger to take their picture is not easy as i though all along.
I was on the downtown walking street and waiting to be struck by a special face.
At first I saw a girl standing with her boyfriend right in front of ZARA store. I told her about the 1000 strangers project and asked if I might take her picture but her boyfriend said "No" immediately. The very first attempt was rejected!
Then came a 20-something young mother with a baby carriage. Took a deep breath, walked to her and began to speak in slow more-like-whispering-than-speaking voice. Rejected... again!
These rejections made me feel anxious, frustrated and really lost. After about 10 Minutes i finally got myself together and kept looking for the next one but it was getting dark and dark outside so i decided to walk down the street, heading to Mayerscher Bookstore.
I approached one shopgirl with the thought "Third is the charm" but i was totally wrong and got another rejection! She was so shy and didn't want to do it.
This time i almost gave up but then i saw this old man. Meulel is 70 years old but he just likes hanging around here, relaxing and reading some books or newspaper.
He were nice to me and let me take some photos. A big thanks to you, Meulel!

#2 Vanessa [02.12.2011]
I've just been so busy lately so this project hasn't had any progress for weeks. It was cold today in Aachen, just like a regular december day in this city. And i was way too lazy to go outside in this weather. But if you somehow manage to float above it, you suddenly feel lucky in a strange way. I'd like to always trust my intuition so i quickly grabbed my camera and put on my coat and shoes.
As usual, my intuition has not failed me. The quick run has been a success, ergo i've got 3 photos and Vanessa is one of them.
Vanessa is 18 years old and currently she is doing her abitur. Meanwhile, she works at the Christmas market. When i first told her about my project and asked for permission to take some photos, she started laughing out loud but then she said yes immediately. She was a little bit shy, that's why 3 first photos didn't look so good so i told her not to look directly at the camera and i've got this one.
After that I had two more strangers captured within half an hour but just save it for another day. Have a nice evening, folks!

#3 Medet [02.12.2011]
There're so many people out there think most people that are playing instruments on the street are drug addicts, homeless or alcoholic etc....
Then if they get one who just does it to sing, because they like singing, they always think because they aren't good enough to get into the music industry.
It's not even halfway true and i always have big respect for street artist.
Don't rush your life.
Don't rush to finish your To-do list. Enjoy every minute and seize every day.
Sitting there and listening to street musicians every once in a while makes me feel very chill and relaxed.
The other day, i was strolling through downtown when i saw him. His eyes full of sorrow, pain and despair caught me off guard and i thought this photo captured his soul!
Thank you and wish you the very best of luck, Medet.

#4 Daniel [02.12.2011]
So today i'm gonna continue with my story the other day. As I mentioned before, the quick run has been a success and i had three strangers captured within an hour.
I saw Daniel when he was working at the street. Daniel is 25 years old and he is a street promoter for a discotheque. When i first saw him, i found this very interesting.
Why?
Because what are the keys to success this strangers project and how to be a good street promoter - these two questions have the same exact answer.
You gotta like the venue. Determine what target audience you want to attract and where will you find them before you hit the streets. Get people excited about it. Have to catch their attention and no matter what happens, keep going.

#5 Enrico [23.12.2011]
Christmas time is in the air, yay yay yay!
I have been going to visit my aunt in Magdeburg and i am gonna stay here for over a week. And because Deutsche Bahn sucks (and expensive, of course) that's why "Mitfahren" always come up first in my mind.
I just called Enrico last week but meeting him yesterday gave me full of surprises.
One: guess what is he doing for living?
Yes, "photography"-related it is but he is not a photographer. He is a cameraman who is living currently in Köln.
And two: he is 41 years old! Man, he looks so young that i thought he is late 20s or something.
Btw, i had one nice ride with him. Thanks to you, Enrico.
So that is for today. I wish you guys (and girls) a merry christmas and have a nice time with your family and friends. See ya!

#6 The man who i forgot to ask his name [04.01.2012]
i just heard someone say that, "Winter without snow is stupid and a waste of cold!"
Though i am not a fan of snow but i have to admit its true. The warm weather is nice at the beginning but then i'm starting to say "What the heck is going on??"
Man man, just try to stop whining and start thinking positive right now.
OK, back to topic, i don't remember if i have said that before but i myself am definitely attracted to intelligence. And he is one of them. I saw him standing with two friends near the city hall. I walked to them and told him about the 1000 Strangers Project and he said yes immediately. It didn't surprised me that he is a journalist and the other friends are photographers (LOL). They are familiar with this and always open and easygoing to this kind of things.
Had a nice conversation that i forgot to ask his name (unbelievable right?). I also forgot to get the model release signed (Am i getting old?)But what the hell...

[1000 Strangers] #6 The man who i forgot to ask his name by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
#7 Marc [11.01.2012]
I was bored out of my mind so i got myself into some shopping sessions to break this boredom.
And of course, my babydoll is always within call. Strangers here i come! LOL
Glad that i carried out both missions successfully. Got a new red sweater and some very nice photos.
I once pointed out that we shouldn't bother the hasty people cause even if they are really nice to have a polite talk with you, they always end up refusing your offer or i have to cut corners to make some photos on such a very short time.
And i've learned something new today. Maybe it's just my way of thinking, but i shouldn't ask someone in uniform for a photo. Because of the job they don't want to get involved.
I asked a post office employee but she just cut me dead. Nah.
Anyhow, it didn't bother me much. Just got Marc's permission to take some photo of him.
Born in Mönchengladbach and he is now a freshman at RWTH Aachen University.
So, that's it. Catch you later!

[1000 Strangers] #7 Marc by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
#8 The man God only knows [04.01.2012]
He was really in a hurry but he still let me take one photo of him.
Then he left.
One photo, no more.
I didn't even know his name.
Didn't know his profession.
Didn't get the model release signed either.
Turned out he is a bishop. That's all i know. It was nowhere near my expectation but sometimes we just have to put up with the inconvenience. Still, i am now very satisfied with this photo.
Cause it usually takes me 3 to 4 shots to choose the best one that allows me to demonstrate exactly what i see inside him/her.
And last but not least, this time it reminds me of my first ground rule: If you want to be a photojournalist, never go out without your Gear, ever!
Kind of annoying, isn't it? Or it is just me?
Wish you guys a great Weekend!

#9 The man with the Broken Smile [11.01.2012]
Everytime i looked at him, he came across as a very depressed and broken man.
Tried to avoid looking up towards the camera.
I don't know why but maybe he's been through the worst time of his life and he wants to block it out but he just can't get himself together.
Or this song called forth some sad memories? A torch for an old sweetheart?
Nevertheless, it doesn't matter whether it's right or wrong. At this very moment, i assume keeping the wolf from the door is his first priority.
So i have a question for you guys. Which story would you like to hear? The boring truth or something more colorful?

[1000 Strangers] #9 The man with the Broken Smile by Dr ‧ House (Nguyen Anh Tu), on Flickr
#10 Simon [11.01.2012]
First Milestone Reached!
And for the record, I will not celebrate some meaningless milestones.
It's been 2 months exactly today since i began this project and i've got 10 photos so far.
I just thought about what do people normally do when they reach some milestones?
1. Look back on what they've done and lament the "coulda-woulda-shoulda" things =)
2. Alternative option: Find & fill in what you missed.
I'm gonna fall for the latter, by all means.
I think I've done a quite good job managing my project so far. Just a little bit slow. Nah, aside from this project and photography, there are tons of things for me to do and improve. So it didn't bother me much.
But after exams i would love to try pushing my own limits a little. We see.
PS: Some infos about him: named Simon, born in München and now studying Engineering management at the RWTH Aachen

The Exams are over!! Whoop whoop! And i'm back to this Project!
Well, to be honest, it is just partly true because i still have one exam left in one months from today but whatever. Still counts!
These past two weeks have been really busy but it was worth it and it's time to unwinddddddddddd. NOW.

[1000 Strangers] #11 Wieders by Dr ‧ House (Nguyen Anh Tu), on Flickr
#12 Kirsten [16.02.2012]
It was the first run with my new grip. And i must confess: i need to break it in a few more times before i get used to it. But i so love this. It felt more solid and easier to hold in some positions.
It was a carnival out there and there was a lot of people dressed in interesting/weird costumes on Market Square. But somehow i didn't feel like capturing them so i looked for someone with "normal look". And Tada, Kirsten is a Dutch who is 30 years old.
She couldn't even understand not a word what i said (in German of course) and her girlfriend had to translate for me.
So i guess that's it for today. See ya and have a rockin' weekend!

#13 Karl, Beatrice & Mara [20.02.2012]
Today is Rose Monday, the day the annual carnival in Germany get climaxed, with its big street parade and parties where people dress up in different costumes. So i told myself why not go grab some fun?
You definetely think that i was using this event as a good opportunity to boost my project with a hell lot of strangers' photos. But i didn't do it and i won't do it. I brought exactly 3 model releases and no more. Why?
- The crucial point of this project: never taking photo of someone without talking to them. And do it 10 times in a row to what point?
- I won't let anything make me doing this project in a lazy way. Like i said, this whole thing is kind of once in a life time experience. Do you want to experience your life in a lazy way?
Anyhow, the street was so messy, that everyone seemed to get impatient and indifference hearing my hello-i-am-a-photographer-blah-blah-blah story.
But i managed it somehow and got what i want.
A big applause for Karl, Beatrice and their little daughter Mara.

Another shot of today.
I saw a lot of photographers today doing on-the-spot photo shoots. Mostly are Canonians, some guys used Pentax... but i didn't see any Nikonian.
Where were you hiding, Nikonians???
Back to him, Sebastian is a pro photographer who currently lives and works in Aachen. He is a pretty cool guy. Check out his Website: www.damon-pix.de

The last shot of rosen monday's quick run.
These junior high school kids are so young and have the long life that is waiting for them.
They are energetic, open-minded, ebullient and maybe superficial but well, we all have been there.
Mistakes have been made but it's normal to be screwed up because following your heart is easy, following your brain is tough.
AND THIS IS WHAT MAKES US HUMAN BEINGS.
Have a great and fulfilling life, Carlo & Jessica!

#16 (19) Giulia [27.02.2012]
Giulia is soooooo cute!
And that smile. Deep inside and beautiful.
It makes you feel like bathing in the sun, feel the warmth spread over your body, radiating through your arms and hands, down through your legs and feet.
Thank you for making my day, Giulia.

#17 (20) Florence [27.02.2012]
Florence and Giulia were doing some surveys for the 100'5 radio station when i saw them.
They seemed to be kinda busy so i waited, waited some more and then waited a little bit longer.
This work calls for patience, right?
Eventually i had a chance to talk to Giulia and told her about this stranger project. We talked about a bunch of stuff and such. Then came a few shots. After all i got off their back and let them finish their job.
Twenty so far and nine hundred eighty to go LOL!

I have a notebook named The Idea Book. Everytime i come up with an interesting idea for just anything (songs, photographic concepts, movies' review and such stuffs), i just start listing everything i can think of, even if it seems like crazy or most unthinkable.
And it does me some good, indeed.
Three weeks ago i came up with something new for the 1000 strangers project. Why on earth don't i start asking them some more questions? About love, life, death, people, meanings and goals of life... etc
Just want you guys know that i'm gonna do this next time. See ya.

#19 (23) Stefan & Mats [01.03.2012]
The other day i went climbing the Drachenfels - the 321 metres mountain in the Siebengebirge mountain range between Königswinter and Bad Honnef together with a friend of mine. It took us about 2 hours with the regional express train from Aachen to get here.
It was just a day off for us and i didn't plan on having any stranger's photo but have some fun laughing at each other!
I had no idea what to expect, but I was amazed. The view was amazing if you know what i mean. The feeling of being on top of everything else. The wind howled. The fog was everywhere below me.
And they even suggested me to take a photo of them. So why not?

#20 (24) Hugo [24.03.2012]
Spring has come back. The weather was so nice today so i went for a stroll round the town with some friends. And like always, i couldn't resist taking photos of some street artists. Life is just so simple, and simple is beautiful.
"Winter is over, the cold is gone,
Life is stirring anew
Instead of blowing drifting snow
There are diamonds in morning dew."

#21 (26) Melina & Markus [06.04.2012]
Photography can not be mass produced. And it should not be mass produced.
It is something unique in your heart which you then take out and share with others. Otherwise you'll end up doing something boring, cliché and uninspiring, let alone running out of idea.
Sometimes when I feel so uninspired, I just take a break away from photography and try not to think about it. Focus on some another hobbies for a while and don't force myself to return to it in a set time. The excitement of it typically gives me more energy and gets me more motivated.
It worked for me. Yesterday i was really in the mood for a quick photo stroll despite of the fact that all shops are closed or have restricted opening hours and people don't go out much on Good Friday.
Met Markus and Melina and they were far more friendly than i thought. Heard same old story: he lives in Aachen und she lives in Würzburg (Hell yeah, been there done that).

#22 (27) Sebastian [06.04.2012]
As i mentioned before, i've started asking the strangers some more questions about his/her personal life with the motto: "We share because we care". This is my first tryout, but i hope that it's gonna get better and more interesting. So let the show begin.
Were you born in Aachen?
- No, i was born in 1992 in Eifel. Do you know where it is? [Yeah, i know it, i've been there twice]
I assume that you like music right? [Yeah, thank you Captain Obvious and he chuckled]
So what are your favorite bands/artists?
- Hmm, definitely Red Hot Chili Peppers. The bassist is just awesome. I also have a RHCP pin on my cap.
Okay. Which guitar do you play? Wanna go pro or just play for fun?
[And yes, I know it was another silly question and he chuckled again]
- I play bass. And nah, it's just my hobby.
What are you doing at the moment?
- I'm currently doing my major in History and Philosophy at RWTH Aachen University. Second semester so far.
[Showed him my strangers' photos] Which one do you love at first sight?
- This one. [typical music lover lol]
Okay, i'm gonna get off your back. Thank you for your time and have a good life, Bastian.

It's been 4 months since the last photo came out. Man, i really miss this project.
Sometimes when people study so much for exams that we honestly don't know what to do afterwards. It is weird to get rid of that proactive, worky mood, right?
Or just rest up and get ready for the next batch?
However, it was the kind of semester that left me drained and exhausted. It really did me in. So i decided to come up for air and had a short trip to The Hague/Holland last week. A 3-Day trip with my girlfriend. It sounds just plain good, plus i felt that i will get a new piece for my project.
I met Peter in early afternoon at Grote Mark while working on a "Cupcake Mission". He came across as a very keen and enthusiastic man. And i simply love enthusiastic people!
Enthusiasm offers that special light coming from inside, the wonderful spark seen in their eyes and the glow on their face. See them and you dare to think everything is possible, you can do it, you can achieve your dream!

This is just the very beginning of a long journey. Everything is difficult at first. But you will learn to cope. You have to discover your true potential and when you realise the power you have, you will make a difference. At least you are trying your best.
The difficulties at the beginning are too great for some persons. They get stuck and never find their way out; they fold their hands and give up the struggle. You are not giving in. But you couldn't follow your nature instinct either, at least when we humans have our natural instincts modified by civilization and by culture. In short, if a man tries to hunt in a strange forest and has no guide, he loses his way.
When things get hard, i tend to not try to force advance but must pause and take thought. However, nothing should put me off my course; i have to persevere and constantly keep the
goal in sight. Step by step.
By the way, i had a good stroll today. Took me a good solid 2 hours.

They are the silent heroes.
All the volunteers, engineers, photographers, journalists, doctors, environmentalist, humanitarians and so on, who make the world a better place.
Felix has been working for the SOS Children's Villages for 3 years.
SOS Children's Villages is an independent, non-governmental international development organisation which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949. It was founded by Dr. Hermann Gmeiner in Imst, Austria.
The organization's work focuses on abandoned, destitute and orphaned children requiring family-based child care. Millions of children worldwide are living without their biological families for a variety of reasons including: parental separation, domestic violence and neglect, they have lost their parents due to war or natural catastrophes, disease - including, increasingly, AIDS.
Since April 2009, the SOS Children's Villages has started the information booths in various German cities. Take a look at their website: http://www.sos-kinderdoerfer.de/informationen/aktuelles/aktionen/pages/starke-freunde.aspx and give a hand! Even little things can help a lot.
A tribute to the real human beings and true heroes. Thank you Felix, thank you guys.

Getting a "Yes" from a young girl is not hard as you think. Indeed it's quite easy and it makes a lot of fun. They are young. They are open-minded. They are energetic. They are not shy and they are confident. They really like to get involved and active when presented with challenges.
Lorena is 19 years old and what can you say about some 18,19 years old girls with one sentence? It's just pure beauty at its best.
At least now i understand why are so many photographers into senior photography. You gonna love to capture the essence of youth, the delicacy beauty and the delightful spirit. Your eyes is being filled with energy, strength and enthusiasm.
You gotta get inspired and very excited. Young people can bring inspiration and some new, fresh ideas, energy and creativity to make the world a better place. They will change the world.

[1000 Strangers] #27 (32) Sarah by Dr ‧ House (Nguyen Anh Tu), on Flickr
I told her about the 1000 strangers project and asked if I might take her picture. She was nice, friendly and gave me permission to shoot some shots. Then all of a sudden her bus came. She was really in a hurry so i just could take only one photo. I just know her name is Sarah and she's 16 years old!
But it's not that i am complaining. This is what i love about street photography and this project. Walking home, the air is filled with the summer scent and you suddenly saw an attractive face. The true feeling of the moment come out in true colors, the joy when you had only one chance and you did it good.
The best photos are sometimes the ones you don’t plan for. Be ready, and you can get some amazing shots.
Alexandra Sophie, a self taught photographer said once, “Before a shooting, I never meet the models, because I like to keep this freshness and innocence. They rarely even posed for a photographer before me, and I rarely now the place where we are going to shoot, the models making me discover wonderful places that they found oneday or another. I love this situation where I have to adapt myself immediately to what I see.”

When you tend to stick to the same daily boring routine for days and weeks, life becomes so mechanical. So does this project.
There's comfort in familiarity. It's easy. There's less stress when you know what's going to happen and when it's going to happen. And it's when you lost your sense of creativity or originality.
Even when there's no roadblock on your regular route, try a different way to work or for errands just to see what you can see. Turn life on its head. That's what i am thinking right now. I need some little changes!
'Cause this boredom/routine is no more than a state of mind. And you can trick your own mind!

The other day i rented a Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 for an engagement session. For the record, prime lenses are always my favorite and it was my first time using a 17-55 so i was a little bit excited and nervous.
Anyways, i've rented from Audiophil several times and had good experiences. With the daily deal they let you pick your lens earliest at 10 a.m and drop off the next day whenever it is more convenient for you.
The shooting was okay but somehow i was not so very satisfied with the 17-55. I've read many reviews about this lens and i expected more from a best DX zoom in the 17-50 range than this. All in all you can say that it is a great event lens. It has great build, great IQ, good contrast, bokeh is also good. Sharpness is okay. But it is way too expensive and when it comes to price/performance ratio then i prefer to my 35f1.8, let alone 85f1.8!
This long shooting did me in so after some shots with Frederick, i called it a day.

As you guys may have noticed, i tend to shoot my strangers project in landscape mode. My girlfriend has asked my why but i couldn't give her any reasonable explanation. Just some sort of "I don't know why. I just like landscape orientated photos. Just like why i love you lol."
Anyway, i did some research about "landscape mode vs. portrait mode" and found some "interesting" informations.
Rules, trending, marketing strategies and so on... But when all is said and done, rules are meant to be broken.
"Some kinds of photos are just suited for landscape mode while others are perfect for portrait mode." Such thing is just a relative thing. Photography is about choices. Your choices. So make your own choice and screw everything else.
But once in a while, a little change could help refreshing yourself.

[1000 Strangers] #31 (36) The beggar by Dr ‧ House (Nguyen Anh Tu), on Flickr
Aachen is packed with historic sights that remind of those days, including medieval buildings, city gates and beautiful fountains. Strolling through the pedestrian streets you gonna enjoy the pleasant mix of historic grandeur and modern innovation.
But not everything is beautiful. The streets of Aachen are filled with beggars. Every coin has two sides. So do beggars. The truly needy type and those ones who are just going to use your money for booze or drug. You may once wondered that firstly do you help a person in apparent need? And the second is your beneficiary uses that help properly?
It's not an ideal world and we can't help them all. But i am talking about the truly needy ones.
Who can we blame? There are a lot of healthy, lazy and capable of working people who screw the system over and get welfare and i don't think they deserve it. But this poor old man seems need it and what is he doing here?

So new semester is here. Students have been back on campus for three days already. Freshmen getting started on their first semester at RWTH.
Like every year, the orientation week for first-year students started on Monday, 01.10 and it's gonna last for one week. They'll get the schedule and learn all the bsics including information and a few tips to get started this semester on the right foot. Getting to know the city and some main compus buildings. And of course, getting involved by participating in the student community.
Streets around the campus quarter and old town are filled with so many students that i didn't have to bust any hump to get some photos of Stefan. Born in Cologne in 1991 and now he is looking for a pathway focussed on mechanical engineering. Good luck!

Music has always been something very special to me. Because music has the power to influence my heart, mind, and soul in ways in which no other thing can. Sometimes it calls forth memories like feelings or thoughts or even events and people from the past. What else can be both exciting and sobering, sad, scary and enlightening at the same time?
My life does not revolve around music, but it has become a huge, positive influence in my life. And of course nothing is as enjoyable to a man as actually playing his own music. So i've started learning guitar a few months ago and I'm loving it more and more. Sure there are days I want to throw it out the window, but frustration is part of learning! It's not too late if you want to bad enough!
This photo was taken the day we (me, my girlfriend and my friend Peter) went to Music Store. While we was playing some songs, she started sing along and her friends too! Had some fun moments. No language has such a power to connect people like music!

IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE I STARTED THIS PROJECT. So i wanna say something different than usual.
When i was a little kid, i had always wanted to draw. Admired those who could draw and create so many wonderful art. Imagined myself being a painter. But i knew i am not talented at painting.
Besides, my parents have very high academic and career expectations for me. Back then i didn't know who do i wanna be so i just followed the goal they already set up for me.
And i was lost, until i found PHOTOGRAPHY. Yesterday my life was heading in one direction and today in another.
Photography has taken me on a journey of self discovery. It changed my life forever.
Now I’m jut not looking at but seeing the world. Not just a whole big picture, but also every details: up, down, left, right, different angles, different sides, different light...
Photography has taught me so many things and yet i can't still get enough of it.
It has helped me to appreciate this wonderful, precious world more than ever. Capturing memories in a creative and beautiful way that would move people, communicate a message and evoke emotions make me feel fulfilled.
And my camera is not just a gear or a machine. It's the extension of myself. I am now COMPLETED.

ell, the most favorite time of the year (?) is here. The clock is ticking faster and we have 18 days to go before Christmas.
The Christmas market places on the town square and spreads out all around and particularly in the street between there and the pedestrian streets. Today i went for a stroll around the town and the christmas market is already crowded with stalls selling sausages, handicrafts, spices, Christmas decorations, embroidery, leather goods....
I did wonder myself why on earth have i taken only one stranger photo last christmas (Stranger #2 Vanessa). Because talking with Katrina was really fun. She's 25 years old and have studied graphic design in Aachen. She herself has done some photographic projects over the last few years so it was not a big deal for me. Come and see her at the glogg counter!

It couldn't be done without help from my friend, Will ND. Thank you so much for your tireless work on this :)
- Have met and been falling in love with my sweetheart. You are always such a dear and a true inspiration for me. I am so happy with you, babe
- About to write my thesis in 3 more months.

- My child "Phụ Đề Việt" has grown so fast, with or without me. Now i can leave it in trustworthy and capable hands.
- Change of the look. The change doesn't matter. The look doesn't matter. What matter is how to feel confident about yourself. Don't let anyone take away your Self-Esteem!
A BIG thanks to everyone who has been supporting me over the last year. This is the last stranger of 2012.
Wish you guys a happy new year. May this upcoming year bring you guys happiness, love and luck :)

So today - the 8th of March is the International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day. In this day, we show our love and gratefulness to our women in many ways: gifts, quotes, flowers or sending messages and beautiful images for the women we love.
A woman is an emblem of beauty, an enigma that harbors a myriad thoughts and emotions within the crucible of privacy. She drives you crazy, and yet one cannot fathom how insipid the world would be without her.
And you can get her love in the form of Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Friend, Beloved, Wife… So please respect HER and treat her well… Happy Women’s Day!
Big thanks to Michael for helping me carrying this message of love for all women i care about.
#41 (51) Alex

[1000 Strangers] #41 (51) Alex by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
I met Alex on a sunny day and i was struck by her face right away. Look at her. That's what i am talking about this project. Non-professional models. Total strangers. But she acted so naturally on camera. Of course not the professional posing kind of face. But she was total comfortable and relax. And i didn't have to do anything. It's all her credit.
Sometimes it could be way more difficult. Some people just don't have a camera pointed at them so often, especially by a total stranger like me. So they don't know how where to look or what to do with their hands. Or just camera shyness.
So what would we do?
I think we should definitely do something to break the ice a little bit and put them at ease. That's being said, better shots are taken towards the end of the shoot.
But when it comes to a portrait shoot like this kind of project, we don't have so much time on the clock like other normal shoots so it could be a real challenge.
However, i will come up with some more specific tips on another occasion. Have a nice weekend, folks!
#42 (52) Prince

[1000 Strangers] #42 (52) Prince by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
He is 19 years old. I am 24 years old.
He is a germany born ghanaian. I am vietnamese.
It seems like we don't have anything in common. But yes, there is one thing: we both have often weird poses in front of camera.
While being photogenic just comes naturally to some people, maybe there are a few things that we can do to look better on photos.
It is important to understand that being beautiful doen not necessarily translate to being photogenic in photos. Being photogenic is about awareness of how to put your best self forward on camera. Learn so that they become your own nature and you cease to be conscious of using them and just do it.
But when it comes to this strangers project, the model don't have the opportunities and time to practice in front of your camera. It's gonna be tricky.
The more comfortable and relaxed thay appear, the better the photos will turn out. Here comes the trick: i would tell their friend acquaintance company talking to them, telling a joke, making them laugh a bit. But don't be too relaxed so that they appear distracted. The point is having them focused on emotions, not a machanical smile.
And meanwhile, i am just no there. I am somewhere else. I am a silent assassin.
And look at the result. He looks fantastic.
But after all beind said and done, i still can't change anything about me. Still, i would rather behind my camera than in front of it. Yeah, it sucks.

I got a day off work so my girlfriend and i took a short spontaneous trip to Maastricht. Planning is much fun as going but sometimes spontaneous travel is not bad as you thought.
It takes you approx 1.5 hours with bus to reach Maastricht from Aachen. Maastricht is located on both sides of the Meuse river in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg.
Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in Holland. While strolling through the inner city, you can see beautiful historic little districts, welcoming and good restaurants and coffee shops and plenty of other attractions.
I don't know if it is just me but i always feel pleasant when visiting any city in the Netherlands. No offense, but it seems like the people here are way more friendly than German.
So nice to meet you Cleo!

[1000 Strangers] #44 (54) Pedro by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
The unusually long winter in Europe this year has really done me in. The cold has held and still has the country in its grip and things do not warm up before middle of April.
Most areas remain just below freezing for most of the week and the dry cold air make it seem much colder.
In the depths of winter, maybe you and i find ourself wanting to sleep more and eat more. We packed our bodies close in our shelter and sleep tight. For the record i don't want to go out in this weather but as a human being, we can't and we don't hibernate. We have to work against that cycle.
So what's i do. I always change the subject and the way i approach media each season. In summer i can spend my whole day outside "hunting and shooting". In winter, i work with my warm computer at my room, thinking, planning, retouching, getting some ideas... Somehow more inward and reflective. And i wait till spring beckons my door...
But once in a while, when you get out of your shelter, you will see something nice, meet someone sparkling. Pedro is such a enthusiastic guy. It seems like he's full of energy and all. I hope that your dream being a football player would come true!
#45 (55) Alexis

[1000 Strangers] #45 (55) Alexis by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
What if we find ourselves beneath the snow?
Our warmest words all frozen in our throats?
And all we feel is left out in the cold?
You and I?
Well, even the winter won't last forever
We'll see the morning and we'll feel the sun
We'll wake up in April, ready and able
Holding the seeds and soil of our love
What if the spring comes soon
and we're surprised?
What if the seasons help us realize,
some things are only proven over time?
I can tell spring is near. I feel the spirit, the freshnes in the air. Just like you wake up and spring is already here.
The weather is not too hot and not too cold. It always is just right. The gentle wind caresses your face and the breeze murmurs in your ears that it's the change of season. It seems like the weather makes people happy.
I met Alexis on a April Monday like this. He is a super cool dude. Nice, friendly, openmind, talkative, charming and charismatic. Kind of dude you can talk about everything with when you first met. He even gave me some advice about the model release. That i don't have to write it too long and too complicated like that. That it's a model release, not a novel. Though i didn't write it! But thank you Alexis. Been such an honor to meet you.
#46 (56) Serhan

[1000 Strangers] #46 (56) Serhan by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
Aachen is not a big city but as a multicultural city with thousand faces, it has surprises in store at every street corner. It seems like diversity has become the new orthodoxy of city planning. You do it wrong, the city ends up being a mixed-up chamaleon. But if you do it right, you will love where you are.
Serhan is one of thousands faces of Aachen. I see him a countless times at the pedestrian street into Elisenbrunnen, right in front of the Foot Locker store. But i didn't have a chance to talk to him until yesterday. It was a rainy day and i almost decied to called off the quick photographic run because of the weather. But it was a blessing in disguise. The currywurst lover were busy hiding from the rain so i went towards him with thought that i don't have to cut the talking with him down to size without interrupting his business.
His name is Serhan, born in 1975 in Aachen but i always call him "The Bratwurst Guy". He amazed me by telling me that he has been doing this 9 to 5 job for eleven years. Everyday except Sunday in eleven years means 3444 Days or 27552 hours standing still and carrying the currywust counter. Though he uses the supporting pole for the counter but it is still pretty awesome. But how did he come up with this idea? He saw it once in Berlin and he has been doing this in Aachen ever since.
We talked lots of other stuffs and he is so interested in Vietnam's street food. He hopes he will fly there one day to see it by his own eyes. Good luck, The Bratwurst Guy!
#47 (57) Dr. Horst Kluttig

[1000 Strangers] #47 (57) Dr. Horst Kluttig by Anh Tu Nguyen Photography, on Flickr
So the past weekend, my girlfriend and i visited the NEA wind turbine. This plant is located in the Euro Wind Park between the districts of Aachen Laurensberg Vetschau and Orsbach in Ochsenstock.
The wind turbine Visitor centre of the NEA was established in 1999 and they named it Windfang (english translation: Wind catcher). Since then more than 10,000 visitors have already experienced the generation of electricity from wind from up close in small groups. A spiral staircase in the tower leads to a viewing platform at 63m height, just below the nacelle. I am a little bit surprised that worldwide, fewer than a dozen wind turbines are so equipped and there is only two or three wind turbines with the observation deck in Germany. From this observation deck, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Aachen region.
But there is one thing, one person that worths more than magnificent: the tour guide – Herr Doctor Horst Kluttig: the mastermind behind of all this. He amazed me with his plain lifestyle.
He is the manage of NEA (New Energy Agency – he has been working for NEA more than 25 years) but every sunday, he is here. Whatever weather, cold or warm. Winter or Summer. At this wind farm. In the past 11 years. Introducing and informing people about the benefits and the future of wind powered energy. He has put so much energy into this project and he talked about this with such enthusiasm. Since everything were only in the blueprint till now. The effort took years, with many people coming and going, but Herr Horst Kluttig remained at the center of the effort along with a core group.
And he doesn't even have an agenda. He just wants to spend time working for the community, to carry a message: Wind energy delivers a multitude of benefits to communities. It is sustainable and creates local jobs, wealth and economic revival, it helps fight climate change and improves our energy security...
Today, Herr Horst Kluttig must have to feel pride and proud of his self when this master plan is cited. I take my hat off for what you've been done!

- So you go to the Japan Day in Düsseldorf every year?
- Not every year. Every weekend. With my wife.
- How long have you been married by the way?
- 32 years. And still counts.
- Wow. Congratulations. Would you describe the Japanese in three words?
- I really like japanese people. They are neat, culture-bound and reticent.
