Like its predecessor, Ragnarok is filled with scenes that manage to say so much, while our stoic protagonist says barely anything at all. It’s tempting to complain that the sequel isn’t more of an evolution, but just managing to live up to God of War 2018 might end up being enough.

Whether it’s a consequence of the much-improved performance or the larger pool of moves, combat feels much better than the first game, especially when you compare what combat options you had at your disposal at this point in each journey

What can we say, then? Well, the first few hours are good – really good. While the previous God of War was a revelation for the franchise, this is clearly building from the same blueprint. That means you should expect more of the same: Kratos is short-tempered, but nuanced now, with an older Atreus making for an evolved father-and-son relationship that has advanced from the previous game. Rather than opt for a long, drawn-out introduction, Santa Monica Studio very quickly layers in all of the mechanics from the previous game, giving you more than enough time to find firm footing, without the kind of protracted build-up that many sequels adopt.

However, what I personally feel is the biggest improvement is the gore and dismemberment in Ragnarok. I felt that God of War 2018 made the idea of blood be a bit sacred, saving it for some key moments in the game. It made sense given that Kratos was trying to put his violent history behind him and raise his son, but I still missed it. Ragnarok see's a big return to carnage, as Kratos once again finds himself drenched in the blood of his enemies. There is a pretty gruesome scene early on I won't spoil, but they really don't hold back. And there are a large number of finishers you can pull off that all end in a pool of blood

God of War made dozens of GOTY lists four years ago (including WellPlayed’s) for a reason, and its successor was always going to have big vambraces to fill. From what I’ve experienced so far, I’d say things are well and truly on track, and Sony Santa Monica’s expansion of this incredible world looks like it’s reaching for the heavens (no doubt to kill whatever god resides there). Stay tuned for our full review coming November 4.

Beyond that though, one thing I've yet to really find is novelty. Perhaps that's down to it being built to work on the PS4, and the limitations that implies - I've squeezed through lots of narrow cracks already, for such a short time - but then, the last one was hardly unpopular. One of the only major complaints from the wider public was about enemy variety, and that's been seen to in my experience so far, with several mini-boss fights already against entirely different foes (good riddance, trolls).

The short answer is yes, you absolutely should be excited. Ragnarök picks up almost literally where the last game left off and in a tradition established as far back as the very first God of War game in 2005, the adventure starts strong. The opening quickly showcases huge production values from expert animators and artists with multiple sequences that remind me why it takes years to craft these epic experiences. Characters both new and old appear, and the performances continue to be some of the best video games have to offer.

God of War Ragnarok addresses criticisms of the original by layering depth and nuance to its core strengths. Kratos and Atreus’s relationship is at the heart of the story, while the refined combat demands your full attention and tests your skill at every turn. I don’t know how it will end as of yet, but the chemistry of its leads and refinement of its action resembles a classic action sequel in the making.

God of War Ragnarök – Hands-on gameplay report
If you loved the bombastic Baldur encounter at the start of God of War (2018), look forward to clashing axe and hammer with Thor in a similarly spectacular battle. Thor unleashes a combo of grabs, lightning-infused Mjölnir blasts, area-of-effect volleys, and more. The two gods grapple and fly through the air as the battle rages across multiple frozen landscapes. Thor’s assault is nonstop, peppering in cutting insults against Kratos’ parenting skills when he’s not outright attacking. It’s a memorable encounter that left me eager for a rematch against the God of Thunder

!suong
