The test was made on 01-21 June 2008, using Windows XP Professional SP2 on a P4 3200 Mhz, 2048MB DDRAM.
All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.
The default settings of each program were not used, in order for each program to achieve its maximum detection rate. Because of this, there is a possibility for the tested programs to detect a few false positives.
All programs were updated on 31 May 2008, between 09.00AM and 12.00PM GMT.
The 246705 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, Nod32, Dr.Web, BitDefender and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.
MS-DOS based virus samples were not used.
ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).
The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.
Most "fake" virus samples were removed, as well as "garbage" files.
The program PER was not tested because there was no english demo version available.
The programs Command and Extendia AVK were not tested because there was no demo version available.
Thorough mode was not used in VBA32 due to extremely slow scan process.
The program A-Squared Anti-Malware is anti-trojan/anti-spyware program, not antivirus program.
The program F-Prot was tested using its command line scanner (options fpscan j:\avtest\trobo /adware /applications /output=fpscan_report.log /streams /maxdepth=4 /heurlevel=4) because its GUI kept crashing.
The programs Kingsoft and ZondexGuard were not tested because they could not be updated.
The programs Windows Live OneCare , BKAV and MoonSecureAV kept crashing while scanning the samples.
The program AntiVir is now called Avira AntiVir.
The program Fire uses the exact same engine as Solo.
The program Vexira uses the exact same engine as VirusBuster.
The program BullGuard uses the exact same engine as BitDefender free edition.
The program Avast Professional uses the exact same engine as Avast free edition.
The program AVG Pro uses the exact same engine as AVG Antivirus free edition PLUS the rootkit detection.
The program A-squared Anti-Malware Professional uses the exact same engine as A-squared free edition.
InVircible did not include a "typical" scanner-function and could not be tested.
V-Catch checks only mail accounts and could not be tested.
DOS-Based scanners were not tested.
The following file types were used.
SH, ELF, COM, EXE, PL, BAT, PRC, DOC, XLS, BIN, MDB, IMG, PPT, VBS, MSG, VBA, OLE, HTM, INI, SMM, TD0, REG, CLASS, HTA, JS, VI_, URL, PHP, WMF, HLP, XML, SCR, PIF, SHS, WBT, CSC, MAC, DAT, CLS, STI, INF, HQX, XMI, SIT.
The virus samples were divided into these categories, according to the type of the virus :
File = BeOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Mac, Palm, OS2, Unix, BinaryImage, BAS viruses, MenuetOS.
Windows = Win.*.* viruses.
Macro = Macro, Multi and Formula viruses.
Malware = Adware, DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Nukers, Sniffers, SpamTools, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Droppers, PolyEngines, Rootkits, Packed.
Script = ABAP, BAT, Corel, HTML, Java, Scripts, MSH, VBS, WBS, Worms, PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, WHS, TSQL, ASP, SAP, QNX, Matlab viruses.
Trojans-Backdoors = Trojan and Backdoor viruses.

Việc thử nghiệm được tiến hành vào từ ngày 1 đến 21 tháng 6 năm 2008 với cấu hình máy thử nghiệm là Win XP Pro SP2, P4 3200 GHZ và 2GB RAM.
Tất cả các chươgn trình thử nghiệm ở đây đều là phiên bản mới nhất. Nhữn chươgn trình thử nghiệm được chạy với chức năng quét đầy đủ tất cả các file
Để đạt được sự tối ưu hóa của các chuong trình thử nghiệm, nhóm thử nghiệm tùy biến các chương trình này và ko dùng tùy chọn mặc định của các chương trình thử nghiệm. Lý do của sự tùy biến các chuogn trình thử nghiệm là nhằm cho các chương trình này có thể phát huy hết các cả năng của mình trong việc tìm ra các chuong trình có khả năng có virus tiềm ẩn.
Tất cả các chươgn trình đều được cập nhật bản mới nhất ngày 31/5/2008, từ khoảng 9AM đến 12PM giờ GMT
246,705 mẫu virus đựợc dùng trong việc thử nghiệm này. Những mẫu này được chọn ra bằng cách dùng VS2000 và theo mẫu của các chương trình như Kaspersky, F-Prot, Nod32, Dr.Web, BitDefender và McAfee. Mỗi mẫu virus được mang 1 tên duy nhất, điều đó có nghĩa là có ít nhất 1 chương trình chống virus sẽ phát hiện ra virus mới trong quá trình thử nghiệm này
Các mẫu virus trên MS-DOS ko được dùng đến trong thử nghiệm này.
Tất cả các mẫu virus được giải nén bằng chươgn trình giải nén chạy trên DOS (WinZip, WinRAR, WinACE, v.v đều ko dùng trong thử nghiệm này)
Các mẫu virus đều có tên file và phần đuôi cụ thể, hợp lệ bằng các dùng chươgn trình đặc biệt là Renexts và checksum32
Hầu hết các mẫu virus giả và các file rác đều ko có trong máy tính thử nghiệm.
Chươgn trình PER ko được thử nghiệm vì nó ko có phiên bản Tiếng Anh cho bản demo.
Chương trình Command và Extendia AVK cũng ko được thử nghiệm bỡi vì chúng chưa phải là phiên bản demo.
Chương trình VBA32 không dùng chức năng quét toàn bộ vì lý do chạy quá chậm.
Chương trình A-Squared Anti-Malware là chương trình anti-trojan/anti-spyware không phải là chống virus.
Chương trình F-Prot được thử nghiệm ở chế độ dòng lệnh (fpscan j:\avtest\trobo /adware /applications /output=fpscan_report.log /streams /maxdepth=4 /heurlevel=4) vì giao diện đồ họa làm treo máy tính thử nghiệm.
Hai chương trình Kingsoft và ZondexGuard không bao gồm trong đợt thử nghiệm này vì chúng không có bản cập nhật mới nhất.
Các chương trình như Windows Live OneCare , BKAV và MoonSecureAV làm treo hệ thống khi tiến hành quét các mẫu virus.
Chương trình AntiVir được đổi tên thành Avira AntiVir.
Chương trình Fire sử dụng cớ chế y chang nhu của chươgn trình chống víu Solo.
Tươgn tự thế chương trình chống virus Vexira cũng sử dụng cùng một cơ chế với chương trình VirusBuster.
Và BullGuard cũng dùng chung một cơ chế với BitDefender bản miễn phí.
Chuong trình Avast Professional có cùng cơ chế hoạt động với Avast bản miễn phí.
Chương trình AVG Pro và AVG Antivirus bản miễn phí cùng dùng chung 1 cơ chế, tuy nhiên AVG Pro có thêm chức năng phát hiện rootkit.
Chương trình A-squared Anti-Malware Professional và A-squared bản miễn phí cùng chung 1 cơ chế hoạt động.
Chương trình InVircible không được thử nghiệm trong đợt này.
Chương trình V-Catch chỉ kiểm tra mail nên cũng ko có mặt trong đợt thử nghiệm này.
Các chương trình chống virus chạy trên nền DOS cũng ko có trong kỳ thử nghiệm này.
