Past or present, Japan seems to attract the occult like nobody's business -- a problem that seems to have plagued the nation long before Godzilla was even born. Atlus is going to prove it anew this fall in Japan, when the demonic team of Kazuma Kaneko (producer/character designer) and Kazuyuki Yamai (director) team up once again to release a new and ponderously long-titled PlayStation 2 action-role-playing-game -- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The King of Abaddon.
Sequel to the equally long-titled Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army (released Stateside by Atlus in 2006), the new game returns us to a fictional version of 1930s-era Japan filled with romance, action, and a seemingly never-ending selection of monsters. The titular Raidou, 14th in a line of prestigious devil summoners, is a young man working for the Narumi Detective Agency in Tokyo, an outfit whose bizarre caseload provides ample chance for him to use his monster-capturing powers on a regular basis. Most of the old cast is back ?- including agency chief Narumi and Raidou's journalist friend Tae Asakura ?- but the setting has moved from the big city to a frigid little village up in the mountains, where the group has been sent by a mysterious client to investigate a kidnapping. The village looks like it's stepped right out of a medieval history book, however, and what's worse, Tokyo is about to face a dire threat in Raidou's absence....
As before, the new Devil Summoner is primarily an action-RPG, with Raidou using a combination of physical weapons (his sword and gun) and the demons he's made his allies to fight off monsters and investigate mysteries. Outside of battles, you'll be walking around town and talking to people adventure-style, bringing the demon ally of your choice along to help with more esoteric matters ?- reading an ancient tablet, for example, or looking into a villager's soul to see if he's hiding something. You'll also run into demons, of course, and a new conversation system (which replaces the previous Devil Summoner's Art of Confinement item) gives you a chance to recruit them for your party, convincing them with your words and even employing your demon allies to back you up.
When battle breaks out, Raidou summons up to two demons at once and begins combat. A new quirk to fighting this time around is a "MAG" system that simulates the magnetite that demons require to exist on Earth. MAG is the fuel that special attacks (both Raidou's and his monster gang's) run off of, and you earn it by striking an enemy at its weak point. This adds an extra element to many battles, since choosing your party's moves wisely enough will enable you to string a near-infinite set of attacks along, using the MAG earned on one strike to feed the next.
It's going to be a very trippy ride for Raidou and crew in this village, judging by its weird denizens and the squadron of masked, ninja-like fighters attacking them. Japanese fans get first crack at checking it out October 23, when the PS2 game is slated to hit stores. The first pressing of the 7,329-yen (around $68) Japanese edition comes with a free soundtrack disc, while a special edition (set to cost 10,479 yen ?- around $97) is slated to include Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax -- Chronicle Edition, a slightly remixed edition of the 2004 RPG hit that includes Raidou himself as an in-game character. No U.S. release has been announced yet.
