From her constant mana-suppression, we know that Frieren is at least partially keeps her guard up at all times. It's therefore not surprising that she sees right through Voll's facade of senility at the start of the chapter.
Yet when Voll plays the same trick on page 15, Frieren is legit spooked for a moment. She allowed herself to become emotionally vulnerable while she and Voll reminisced. In that moment, Frieren received a grim reminder. Even Voll would eventually fade and die, taking with him Frieren's connection to her old party.
Even more distressingly, Voll gave Frieren a glimpse into her own future, when her own memory will grow feeble and faded. On page 13, Frieren dodged Voll's question of whether she still remembered Himmel's voice. She insists that "I remember everything. Himmel was my reason for getting to know humans. It is equally as important as the reason why Grandfather Voll wanted to protect the village."
Voll's connection to the village and his wife are intertwined, just as Frieren's connection to humans and Himmel are intertwined. This equivalence is more evidence that Frieren has unrealized romantic feelings for Himmel. Frieren secretly fears that she will end up like Voll; fulfilling a promise for a lost love, lacking even the comfort of remembering her lover's face and voice.
For Frieren, the suffering will be even worse, because she will live much longer and know many more humans before her journey ends. Frieren's love for Himmel has exposed her to grieving for all the humans that will come after him. Frieren is at the funeral, grieving. She will continue for eternity.
On page 16, Frieren does not admonish Voll for tricking her into this moment of existential dread. Instead, she promises to carry Voll's memory with her into the future. She has internalized the duty Himmel gave her in the flashback: "She shall carry our memory to the future."
At the time, Frieren dismissed Himmel's comment, carelessly replying "I don't really mind." That adventure and its lesson are in the past. Frieren's growth and learning are in the now. (Sidenote: I love how this series bucks conventional thematic structure. Normally, Himmel's thematic thesis statement would be at the end of the chapter; perhaps accompanied by a dramatic monologue by Frieren during a climactic battle. Instead, Himmel's statement is slipped into the middle of the chapter as the setup for a joke. Frieren learns, and then just keeps on walking.)
When Frieren's village died, she expressed her grief through constant-suppressed, genocidally-scaled, everlasting anger. It was a subtle murderous rage, but it was there. In the aftermath of Himmel's death, we are watching Frieren reach an equally subtle sense of acceptance for her grief. In this chapter, we see Frieren learn from Voll that accepting grief can galvanize more than the pain the of grief can paralyze.
Voll's wife is dead, but she is not gone. Her face, her voice, even her name are forgotten. But her impact on the world endure while Voll protects the village. His guardianship immortalizes her desire for peace, and even his faded recollection resurrects her in his dreams before the end.
Likewise, Frieren's village is dead but not gone. They endure through Frieren's quest to rip and tear until it is done.
The great mage Flamme is dead but not gone. She endures through Frieren's constant use of her mana-suppression technique.
The hero Himmel is dead but not gone. He endures through the world he saved, and the elf who loves him. Every time Frieren befriends a human, watches them die, and grieves for them, she resurrects Himmel as much as the magic of Ende. She shall carry his memory into the future. She's got to carry that weight, and in doing so, she makes them both immortal.

Mới đọc mấy chap đầu hành trình đi với Fern thấy feel quá. Một bộ manga truyền tải thông điệp rất nhẹ mà lắng đọng, ko cần phải lên gân lên cốt hay phải nói huỵch toẹt ra như vài bộ shounen phổ biến hơn (looking at you narutard).
