First Love is the official debut album by Hikaru Utada, released on March 10, 1999.

First Love is the best-selling CD album in Japanese music history. It sold over 7.65 million (estimated by Oricon),[1][2][3] or 8.53 million (estimated by RIAJ[4]) copies in Japan alone.

It is also the only CD certified 8x Million (32x Platinum) by RIAJ.[5]

It sold over 2 million in its debut week,[6] and topped the Oricon Weekly Album chart 6 times.

Distance is the second album released by Japanese pop singer Hikaru Utada, released on March 28, 2001 in direct "competition" with A Best by Ayumi Hamasaki.(see 2001 in music).

Distance is the 4th best-selling album in Japan of all time with over 4.46 million copies sold. [1] , and sold over 3 million copies in its debut week, setting Japan's one-week album sales record to date.

Deep River[spoil]

Deep River is the third Japanese studio album (fourth overall) released by Japanese pop star Hikaru Utada, released in 2002. It sold just over 2.35 million copies in its first week of release [1] (much like the 2,026,870 units by First Love and 3,002,720 by Distance in their debut sales week), easily debuting at #1 on the weekly, monthly and eventually yearly charts of the Oricon Albums chart.

The final track, "Hikari," would be her first single to reach #1 on the Oricon Weekly Singles chart three times, and would be the Japanese version of the theme song for Square Enix's smash hit RPG video game, Kingdom Hearts. The song has an English version, "Simple and Clean," that would accompany promotion of "Kingdom Hearts" in the Western Hemisphere and elsewhere. That song would give Utada's voice and music its first major mark of international recognition. The album was Utada's most acclaimed work to date by fans and critics alike, and earned her the Triple Crown at the 17th Golden Disc Awards [2]. DEEP RIVER is the 8th highest selling album in Japan of all time [3].

Ultra Blue[spoil]

Ultra Blue is the fourth studio album by Hikaru Utada, released in 2006 (see 2006 in music). It debuted at #1 on the Oricon daily, weekly and monthly charts and sold 500,317 copies in its first six days of sales. Ultra Blue had sold more than one million copies worldwide and almost four million digital single tracks and ringtones as of July 13, 2006 according to EMI.[1]

Ultra Blue was also a strong online digital seller. After two months of digital downloads, Ultra Blue remained in the top ten album downloads in Japan's largest online music store, iTunes Japan. This album also became the fourth most downloaded album on iTunes Japan of the year and won an "Album of the Year" title at the 2007 Nihon Golden Disk Awards.[2] On July 30, 2007, EMI Group released its Annual Report for 2007, and in it reported that Utada%u2019s album %u201CULTRA BLUE%u201D had sold 1.3 million units worldwide, making it EMI Music%u2019s 10th-best selling album of the past year.

Heart Station[spoil]

Heart Station[1] is the fifth Japanese studio album (seventh overall) by Hikaru Utada, which was released on March 19, 2008.

Heart Station's first week sales was 480,081 copies, collecting the lowest first week sales in Utada's career. However, it was still certified million by the RIAJ for shipments of 1 million copies in Japan, and stayed in the Oricon top 10 for 11 consecutive weeks, becoming her most successful studio album in terms of worldwide sales since the 2002 Deep River. It also managed to outsell her previous album, Ultra Blue, by nearly 100,000 copies.

On May 13, 2008, nearly two months after its release, Barks.jp reported that the digital sales of all songs on the album had surpassed 15 million downloads,[2] and is the most downloaded album in Japan during 2008.[3] The album also ranked as the 5th best-selling album of 2008, and best-selling studio album, as all the other albums topping the charts were compilation albums.[4]

Heart Station was an extremely strong digital seller, becoming the #1 album of 2008 on iTunes Japan with 4 singles in the Top 100 songs.

Exodus[spoil]

Exodus is an English language album by Utada, released in 2004. It was released on September 9, 2004, in Japan, with a special booklet and housed in a cardboard slipcase. All of the Japanese translations were done by Hiroko Shintani (%u65B0%u8C37%u6D0B%u5B50, Shintani Hir%u014Dko?), except for the song "Animato" which was translated by Utada herself. Utada stated that it had a certain feel to it that she wanted to bring across to her Japanese audience.

Exodus was released in North America nearly a month after it was released in Japan, on October 5, 2004 and the UK version was released about a year after on September 26, 2005. Although it was released in three different areas, Utada's Exodus album failed to make a mainstream effect in the United States and European Territories. The album reached #160 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

The tracks "Opening" and "Crossover Interlude" contain the exact same lyrics, but are mixed differently. Even though "Opening" has vocals in the song, the lyrics aren't provided in the lyric booklet. The Hong Kong and Taiwan versions of the album contains lyrics for "Opening" in Chinese.

Only two Japanese words have been used for the whole album. The words "Konnichiwa" (%u4ECA%u65E5%u306F?) and "Say%u014Dnara" (%u3055%u3088%u3046%u306A%u3089?) are found in "Easy Breezy". Additionally, the words "Thank you for praying for my success" (%u6210%u529F%u7948%u3063%u3066%u304F%u308C%u3066%u3042%u308A%u304C%u3068%u3046, Seikou inotte kurete arigatou?)" are written in the lyric booklet.

Exodus was re-released[1] on September 20, 2006 in Japan, under Universal International, parent company of Island Def Jam. This limited reissue retailed at ¥1470.

"Devil Inside", "Exodus '04", "You Make Me Want to Be a Man" and "Easy Breezy" debuted on American radio in April 2004, while on Japanese radio in June 2005 and on British radio in May 2006.

Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol. 1 is the only compilation album by Hikaru Utada, released on March 31, 2004. It features all A-side of her hit singles to that date, including 11 #1 hits and all the 15 tracks reached Top 5. The album version was remastered by Ted Jensen. The album was released worldwide in April 2004 on iTunes

It sold over 1.4 million copies in its debut week[1], and became the #1 selling album of the year in Japan[2] (her fourth consecutive time accomplishing this particular milestone, a record for a group or solo artist in that particular territory).
