The summer isn’t quite over, as Annabelle: Creation and The Hitman’s Bodyguard still have work to do before we start calling game/set/match for the summer movie season of 2017. The good news is that there were quite a few good or great movies both in the wide release arena (Wonder Woman, War for the Planet of the Apes, Baby Driver, etc.) and arthouse/platform arena (The Big Sick, Landline, Detroit, etc.). Plus, there are plenty of alleged goodies that I have yet to see (Step, The Little Hours, etc.) and I must concede that most folks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming more than me. Speaking of which, that’s the bad news. If you look at the domestic box office, the weight of the summer box office was carried almost exclusively by the three big superhero movies that kicked off the first three months.
