TOKYO--Today at the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix showed off a bevy of trailers for their upcoming titles in their patented "Closed Mega Theater." Included among the cornucopia was an updated, expanded trailer for the eagerly anticipated RPG, Final Fantasy XIII. While concrete information, like a release date, is still up in the air, the trailer at least showed off a good amount of new eye candy for the audience.
If you've happened to see the trailer from this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, not much of substance has changed in the new TGS trailer. The action still revolves around the same nameless woman that was shown causing so much property damage in the earlier trailer. In the previous trailer, though, her enemies were exclusively human; now, she's shown fighting against a number of monsters, as well.
In the first instance, the enemy that appears is a massive demon, looking somewhat like the Balrog from the Lord of the Rings movies, save that it glows blue and swings a massive sword that leaves energy trails behind it. The guards in the large city that's under assault manage to summon their own defenses, as they activate a blue energy field through which leap a few battle wolves, which quickly coalesce from pure energy into solid matter to take on the monster. The woman isn't bereft of tricks of her own, however; immediately preceding the precious few seconds of battle footage (which appear to be identical to the E3 trailer), she drops a grenade on a group of enemies and then slices through it with her sword, causing them all to go flying.
Afterwards, a bit of footage appears in which the woman directly engages another large monster, which somewhat reveals the Ifrit summon from Final Fantasy X, but in a bit of a bluish hue. This didn't appear to be battle footage, though, as everything moved around a bit too much for it to be anything other than a cutscene.
Lastly, the brief trailer is wound down by the appearance of a mechanized, flying manta ray-esque creature, which landed on one of the railway trains that are seen zooming through these trailers, and then ground it to a halt by pressing it against the track. It stayed there for a moment, causing the woman to leap up from the train and see what all the fuss was about. As in the previous trailer, this one ended as she held her sword out toward the beast and posed for the camera.
Although everything is still deliberately cagey--the game is still a long ways away--we're going to go out on a limb to surmise that the game's plot is at least superficially similar to that of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, where a female protagonist attempted to convince a skeptical world that their reliance on technology was the cause of their problems. The juxtaposition of the world's high-technology setting and the apparently startling appearance of demons and monsters make us think that perhaps the advanced technology is for some reason the cause of the monstrous invasion, which perhaps isn't that much of a stretch, considering the classic relationship of nature versus technology in most of the previous Final Fantasy games.
Anyway, that's pure supposition. As more details become available on Final Fantasy XIII, we'll be sure to relay them to you as quickly as possible.
Final Fantasy XIII
The core game in the compilation was shown first, followed by Agito and Versus.
The trailer for FFXIII was essentially a remixed version of the E3 trailer, with added scenes to show off more gameplay. The trailer started off in a speeding train much like the E3 trailer, but quickly shifted to other locations, such as a populated city. The trailer also showed how the heroine is able to move with such accuracy and speed; she uses a special device that allows her to literally levitate when she's not moving, and it also lets her move faster than normal. This might make sense in battles; the game still uses menu-driven combat, and it's possible that while making decisions on what to do, the game will go into slow motion a la The Matrix while it waits for your commands. The trailer ended in the same fashion as the E3 original, with our heroine squaring off against a giant monster. Overall it was a cool trailer, but there wasn't a lot of footage that suggested how the game is going to be played.
The mobile game Agito seems to be a card-based game, judging from the trailer that we saw. The trailer started off by scanning a ruined landscape, and then quickly focusing on one solitary island. The scene shifted towards a building that looked like a school, with dozens of students converging on the building. The students suddenly disappeared, leaving one blond-haired boy in the building. By cutting his finger and then dipping it into a small console, the whole building came alive, and then the boy took out his deck of cards to examine them. Unfortunately for him, the building around him collapsed, leaving him unconscious with his cards fluttering away. His cellphone rang as the trailer faded to black.
Finally, the Versus trailer started with a view of a modern looking city during the evening. Shifting to a view inside one of the buildings with a man sitting on a throne, the trailer went on to explain how one isolated city housing the last crystal, protected by its king, stands alone, resisting the 'heretic order' of the outside world. Then, the man on the throne stands and leaves the building, as the battle for the last crystal begins. Outside the building, the man is met by several dozens of armed soldiers who notice his appearance. As he walks down the stairs, the soldiers start firing on him, but it's futile. Apparently, the power of the 'king' is too much for them, as he seems nearly invulnerable to their attacks. Soon, the force surrounding the man materializes into several swords. The 'king' grabs one as the trailer ends. From the looks of things, Versus is going to be very action-based, but it'll be more about ancient technology (swords, crystals) going up against modern tech (guns). This seems to be the recurring theme in all of the FFXIII games.

The site does not offer a lot of new information just yet, but at least promises a playable version of the game for next week's JUMP Festa 2007. Furthermore, the website confirmed that Toshiyuki Itahana is again serving as the game's character designer. Itahana already worked on the first Crystal Chronicles for GameCube. Recently, he was responsible for the character designs of the PlayStation 2-based action RPG Code Age Commanders and the upcoming DS title Chocobo to Mahou no Ehon.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates has yet to receive an official release date in Japan.
Link : http://rpgfan.com/news/2006/1593.htmlAt a press conference in Tokyo today Square Enix announced first details regarding the newest installment of its flagship series Dragon Quest, titled Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no mamori Hito. Just like Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Quest IX will be developed by Fukukoka-based Level 5, makers of Rogue Galaxy and the upcoming White Knight Story for PlayStation 3. Furthermore, Dragon Quest IX will feature an online component. Players will be able to team up with their friends and create a party of four, similiar to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Battles will be more action-oriented this time around, as series mastermind Yuuji Horii is aiming for an entirely different, new Dragon Quest experience. Composer Kouichi Sugiyama also made an appearance at today's event, saying he will continue to compose music for Dragon Quest until he dies.
Dragon Quest IX will be available in Japan sometime next year.
