I saw this tonight, and I really liked it. A solid 3.5/5.

- Tom Cruise is great as always, but his character took me surprise. He's much different than how the trailers paint him. The trailers paint him as straight up no nonsense action hero, but he's actually

a thief and portrayed as kind of a sleazy guy at first

It was a nice change up for Cruise and one it seemed like he had fun playing. Overall I really liked him as Nick.

- Like the Fraser series, it's definitely more action than horror, but the horror elements are more present (and way, way better) in this one. The mummies/zombies henchmen are cool as hell and a lot of fun. There's a big creepy factor which I really appreciated as a horror fan.

- There's a nod to the Fraser movies. It's not really a "spoiler," but just in case:

they show the book from the first movie. Annabelle Wallis uses it to hit a guy in the head, then the camera cuts to the book on the ground (very quick). It's undeniably the book from the first movie (the one that unlocks with the key). My gut says this is a cute nod/cameo and not an acknowledgement of the Fraser series as canon.

- Sofia Boutella as the Mummy is pretty good. She's really just your standard monster, doing things for power/because she's evil. It was fine by me; I don't need all my villains to be fleshed out. They explain the how/why of her, then she starts causing trouble. She doesn't do much outside of kill redshirts, so she's just a kind of middle of the road villain that doesn't stand out at all.

- I want to see more of Russell Crowe and Prodigium.

When he turns into Hyde, it reminded me of the Green Goblin from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but I wasn't expecting them to have him go full on Hyde in this movie. The fight scene between him and Cruise was cool (especially because it was kind of unexpected in how it came out of nowhere)...

But it's the only part of the movie that suffers from "the payoff to this will be in another movie" that comes with universe building. Jekyll will leave audiences with a lot of questions, and he pretty much is only there as set up for other movies.

This is a really solid, fun flick. It surprised me. The movie doesn't feel like anything special, but for what it was, I had a lot of fun and was entertained the whole time. I felt it was a pretty good start to a cinematic universe, and it left me excited to see what comes next, especially with

3.5/5. Worth checking out if you like Tom Cruise movies, action movies, and action movies with horror elements.
