I'll post this because I think it's relevant. If the MOD's disagree, please feel free to do what you like to this post
Star Conflict (also made by Gaijin) used to have a leveling system the same as ours currently in War Thunder.
You would rank up in a certain nation/faction and once you hit said tier, you would unlock all ships within that tier and would be available to fly. Then, in the course of a single day, without prior notice the leveling system was completely overhauled. Now, you not only had to have the ship preceding it to advance the tree line, but also had to grind a certain number of experience to unlock it when you reach a new tier/level.
Well, as you might have guessed, this didn't blow over so well. Many high level players did not buy ships of a lower rank within a certain tree due to many reasons such as: money, uninteresting ships, under powered, etc. Now, all of a sudden, they had to go back down to rank up the ships they've neglected in order to get a certain ship some tiers higher. If there was a warning before this patch, I am sure more people would have bought ships. I know I would have.
This also made premium ships somewhat useless as they did not advance your tree line. Gaijin tried to correct this by allowing a small portion of exp (I believe 10%) to be transferred over to any other ship. You had to use real money to do so.
This, along with many other things such "enhancements" such as capping the squad limit to 3, a new weapon/equipment system that was neither asked or needed, unaddressed issues with MM, imbalance between tiers and ships inequality led many experienced people to leave Star Conflict for good.
I guess the narrative of this is simply:
Gaijin has done this before
