Understanding the System of Playstation Vita

In a rare interview, Sony group SN Systems explains to Develop how it's making PS Vita as easy to as possible to build games for.

Q : How has SN Systems been involved in the creation of the NGP development environment?

A : Bernard James, VP, development: For the NGP development environment we provide the compiler, debugger, target control and performance analysis tools.
They are improved versions of what we provided on PlayStation3 and PSP. At the early stages of working on the development environment we redesigned a lot of the tools based on the feedback we had from the last five years of PS3.

The big message was that people coming into the industry from scratch had learned a lot of their bread and butter programming skills on things like Visual Studio Express, perhaps while they’d been at university, and in that circumstance they get very familiar with working in their IDE. Sometimes they can find the context switch of moving to a new IDE difficult, so it was something we wanted to address as part of the whole, ‘making NGP development as easy as possible’ goal.

That considered, this time we built our debugger into Visual Studio. We’d been asked for it for a long time, and we did take careful consideration over the decision. The previous debuggers were made without Visual Studio, but they provided additional features that Visual Studio didn’t. It was a tough decision when we made it, but the feedback we’re getting from NGP developers today has told us that it was the right decision.

Sony to reveal PS Vita's GPU secrets at Develop Conference 2011

In an announcement made earlier this morning, it was revealed that Sony will discuss the PlayStation Vita at this year’s Develop Conference.

The discussion will take place on July 20, and head of developer services Kish Hirani and Sony’s Neil Brown will give the first public talk since the handheld was revealed as the NGP back in January.

Brown will delve into the technical specifications of the PS Vita, and will discuss how the graphics pipeline in the Sony-made handheld will work, which is said to be vastly different compared to the GPU’s found in current-gen gaming consoles and PCs. Brown will also discuss some of the findings from current PS Vita developers.

The Develop Conference will take place between July 19 and July 21 in Brighton, U.K.

Sony Announces 'PSP Engine' for PSP Remasters

The technology that runs the PSP Remaster series of PSP to PS3 HD remakes now has a name: PSP Engine.

Introduced by Sony's Kentaro Suzuki during a session at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 event in Tokyo (via Famitsu.com), PSP Engine is the base engine for PSP Remaster games. PSP Engine acts as a middle ground between the PlayStation 3 OS and a PSP game and offers the following features:

High res rendering
Control (with Dual Analogue support) through wireless controllers (Dualshock 3/Sixaxis)
3D stereoscopic output
Ad-hoc Party unification
Main memory and graphic memory expansion
Common save data

There aren't really any major surprises in that list given what we know about the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD version.

Famitsu's coverage from the event shows some slides that go more in-depth about a few of these features. The memory expansion feature can is used to swap out high resolution textures and other assets, for instance.

Playstation Vita Beats Out Wii U in Game Critics’ Best of E3 Awards
Sam Winstrom — Sony's new handheld, the Playstation Vita, stole the show this year at E3 according to the Game Critics Awards. Even though it was formally announced in January, the handheld still out shined Nintendo's new home console and current portable in the annual awards.

PlayStation Vita Facial Recognition Tech Demo

Posted on 07.01.2011 at 10:20, by Anoop Gantayat

Sony has some sweet facial recognition software in development for PlayStation Vita. During a presentation at yesterday's Game Tools and Middleware event in Tokyo (this is the same event where PSP Engine and the PlayView update were announced), the company showed a demo of how players could be using their face to interact with the new portable.

The video below shows video chat that uses facial recognition. The Vita picks up on the speaker's facial movements and converts his or her movements into the movements of 3D chat avatars. See for yourself here.

The chat windows are being generated in real time by the Vita.

According to 4Gamer, Sony refers to this technology as "Face Control." They hope that players will be able to use their face to control games and change viewpoint.

There are no plans to convert the above demo into an actual product, Sony's Yoshikatsu Kanemaru said during the presentation.
