Hi all

basic build
*single cc
*2nd scv out makes supply depot
*4th scv makes 1st rax
*6th makes 2nd rax
*7th makes 3rd rax
*8th makes 4th rax
*when 1st rax is done send rine out in either direction for scouting
rally others to a safe location so your rines are better prepared to play defensively in a zealot rush situation
*get another supply and gas
now, here's were you must adapt. 1 of your 2 scouting marines will find the zerg based on how the zerg plays you will do different things
zerg option1: does not choke
takes a little practice to get this down, and honestly im rusty b/c every1 chokes nowadays, but this should be a nice short game
you must tank push their base. get a factory and an academy, ignore the 2nd cc b/c you can win this fast if played right. keep making rines (keep up on your supply depots) and they will auto-rally to your opponent's choke. also get seige tanks out of the fact, when you have the gas get a 2nd
throw a few fbats in to protect from zlings. not alot, just a few and get range on rines
when tanks arrive, move up just outside of his base, your rines wont have range but your tanks will. seige the tanks and hold the rines back (put them on hold so they dont get lured into sunkens) now, your seige tanks will start blasting away at his base and if he tries to attack you to kill the seige tanks, your rines/fbats will handle his zlings/maybe hydras. as your tanks kill off the things in range for them, unseige them and advance the whole army forward. remember to keep making marines and tanks (good idea to get a 2nd fact in case hes heavy on hydras) after you move forward, repeat the process, seige tanks again and put rines on hold to prevent they from getting lured. he will probably attack you at some point, manually have tanks attack his hydras. if hes all zlings, unseige tanks so they dont splash rines/fbats
after pushing for a while, he will run out of base to hold off your tanks, and you will have won
zerg option 2: choke
this is fine, t owns z in late game. when you see hes choked, get a 2nd cc and start on your tech. only get 1 factory though. and get your starport asap and get your rine upgrades asap as well as more barraks. when fact is done keep pumping tanks out of it. when 2nd cc is done, get scanner and scan his base to see what kind of units he is producing. this will tell you which sub-option to prepare for
zerg option 2.1: choke to ground units
your scanning reveals to you that your opponent is making ground units, zlings and hydras. get another 2 facts (you will probably never need more than 4 in tvz) and start in on as many rax as you can get. rally your rax to a central location ideally in the middle of your base. have a marine outside his base as a scout so you know when hes about to attack you and you can prep for it.
keep scanning to make sure he doesnt change his mind. you only have to wait for him to attack you, you are playing defensively for this middle game, let him attack first and then after you hold it you will be able to play late game vs him.
after you have your rax pumping rines and your facts pumping tanks, get 4-8 starports and rally all of them to your main (this way wraiths are already at main in case of a muta bomb)
when he eventually comes to attack you, move all units to choke, seige tanks, wait for him to come and your rines/tanks will be able to handle him easily. then unseige and send entire army to attack him. even if you fail, you will be alive for late game where you can win.
zerg option 2.2: choke to air
your scanning reveals to you that your opponent is making alot of mutas, you know he is either going to muta bomb you or go for guards
keep the 1 fact only and go straight for starports, at least 4. place a marine scout outside his base so you will know if he comes to attack you and can seige tanks/move a few rines up to choke which will hold the minor ground attack, but keep almost all rines at your main b/c of the muta bomb
when starports come in have them rallied to main and start producing wraiths and make sure to research cloak for wraiths
zerg option 2.2.1: choke to muta bomb
you continue scanning and maybe see he is sending mutas at you, maybe you dont, but you know he is going air so you are ready for it regardless. you have a ton of rines at your main as well as the start of your wraith fleet, he comes in with at least 24 mutas and a queen (possibly more)
immediately stim your marines and use wraiths to target the queens (its very important to kill the queen b/c she can take your cc at around 500 hp) now your rines are raping the mutas, b/c rines rape mutas, your wraiths start in on them too, but you still need to be careful not to lose that cc, so grab 12 scvs off 1 side of your mins, right click onto the cc to repair it, and hold shift and assign to minerals, this way they will repair cc and then immediately return to mining mins. do the same thing w/ the other side. ideally thats 24 scvs repairing, but they will get confused and only a few will repair. but you still want to grab the full 12 b/c it saves you time. after youve held his attack, send all marines/tanks at him, keep wraiths on hotkey in reserve but not as a main attacking unit. continue upgrades and get 3 more factories and as many rax as your funding will allow.
zerg option 2.2.2: choke to guardians
your scanning shows hes making guardians with those mutas you saw, you can still keep some rines at your main (eventually you want to start turreting around here so you dont have to be concerned about the muta bomb)
you get started on wratihs immediately, maybe 6 starports, rallied to main as always (it also makes it easier to grab them when youre in a hurry b/c you know where they will be and they will also be clumped together) wait for him to attack, if hes taking a long time and you get your infantry upgrades in as well as a fleet of wraiths, you may wish to attack first. get another 2 factories so you have 3 (eventually you'll want 4) now, when you have wraiths coming in (make sure you have cloak), and lots of rines, and some tanks, just keep your macro up while waiting for attack, get as many barraks as possible, once again, rallied to a central location.
he will eventually come with some ground (maybe alot of ground) and guards. maybe some mutas if hes dumb. you seige all tanks and let marines do attacks and absorb hits while tanks/rines start decimating his hydras/zlings. but be careful, if you let his guards go unchecked, he will kill your rines and then you will have a hard time dealing w/ the attack. rines are key. more rines are always better. so you bring your fleet of wraiths up, their ONLY goal is to kill the guards, and maybe ovies if it aids in keeping the detectors from allowing the hydras to kill them. so you attack all wraiths to the first guardian, then use shift to attack the next, and use shift to tell them to attack every guard you can. this will cause them to automatically target 1 guard then the next then the next till all are gone. be careful though, if he brings in ovies your wraiths are on the front lines and will die very fast leaving your ground open to attacks.
during this time, fill up all barraks with marines (fill up the que) and keep making wraiths and tanks. the 2 most important units are marines and wraiths though.
after youve held his attack, you can counter all units at him and hold wraiths back till you see he has guards, then send them in to attack the guards and withdraw again.
late game tvz
marines marines marines. i have dubbed marines "universal badasses" because they ******* own, they take up hardly any ground space, they have fast rate of fire (low cooldown) they cost only 50 mins, they build fast, you can que up 5 of them in a barraks. marines are the best unit in the game starcraft, and you should use them heavily.
if you find at some point that you have a shitload of minerals (like 10k) then that means you have too many scvs, which is bad b/c it detracts from supply available for your army. so grab like 12 off of there and send to his mineral patch or gas they will go out and die, you will be able to replace them with marines or tanks or wraiths
late game is fairly easy, just follow some of these basic guidelines
keep your eye out for muta bombs (muta bomb in late game can be very bad for a z though if they lose some 50+supply while you have an entire army bearing in on their base, that can win you the game right there, even if they are successful) you'll want to start turreting up your base in case he does attempt this technique
keep your eye out for drops (build some shit in adjacent bases, maybe a turret or an ebay and lift it or w/e u like, just have good recon so you dont get taken by suprise)
prevent him from expoing (good recon will do this)
know when to pull back to your base (if your army gets decimated, pull back and regroup at your base where you have the advantage)
always have wraiths ready to aid you if he brings in guardians (same technique i told you b4, target 1 at a time, pull back when he brings in detectors/hydras, move forward again after tanks kill hydras)
keep as many of your barraks conatantly filled with marines as possible, and as many of your starports filled with wraiths as possible, facts too, but not as important.
have full upgrades (obviously)
when you attack, seige tanks as they come into contact w/ front of opponent's army, then as his army comes down, your rines/tanks will own him
its basically a matter of keeping unit production up (keeping ques filled on buildings) and forcing his ground vs your ground, and his air vs your air. since wraiths own guards, thats a m/u you will try to force. since rines/tanks own all other zerg units, you will try to force that m/u also
if he brings in defilers for swarming, mix a few fbats in there and remember, seige tank splash works inside of a swarm, so respect the power of the swarm, but dont fear it too much. your tanks will do you good and the fbats will come in and own the swarm
if im forgeting anything else post it and ill add
some other ideas
nukes. if your opponent is 3 or 9, get nukes with eye range (cloak doesnt hurt either, place them in base above your opponent (1 or 11) and then nuke down across the barrier. it will splash all drones working and will kill any low hp buildings like sunks/spores
fbat drop. your opponent may be feeling secure behind his choke, and thus not prepare for a fast attack (ppl dont expect drops much from terran) so fill up 8 fbats into a dropship, (your constant scanning will reveal to you if he has heavy d back there or not) send the dropship across his main, as its moving, press the "u" button and click on the dropship again. this will cause it to go into "unload mode" where it automatically unloads firebats while moving, allowing you to grab them, stim them, and target his drones
recon. its important to have good recon, units will work, but they take away supply from your attacking army, so build some inexpensive buldings like turrets or ebays all over the map. this will be nice b/c you will be able to see alot of the map, know if hes building somewhere, or if hes sending a drop or a muta bomb @ you, basically just let you know whats going on around the map so you can plan for it accordingly. turrets are good b/c theyre cheap, and they attack air units like mutas, causing them to be damaged b4 they arrive @ your base. but ebays are also nice b/c theyre cheap, you can build them anywhere and then liftoff and fly to various places around the map, meaning it takes less effort, no scv logistics involved
macro macro macro. ALWAYS have your barraks and other buildings (but esp your barraks) filled up with marines, you may be 200/200 but if you have 20 barraks with 5 marines in each, then thats 100 more supply, as soon as your current army gets killed, your new army will already be there waiting to be sent again, your attacks will be relentless, 1 after the other after the other, and if your army dies and he attempts to counter, suprpise, hes met by a full nother army in your base
wraith bomb. yes, terran has a less effective equivalent to the muta bomb. the wraith bomb can be effective because while terran can completely repair their cc, the zerg's main hive can only slowly regenerate, meaning if you keep at it, you can eventually kill it off by doing a little bit of damage over a series of attacks. this can be effective becaues it will drastically reduce zerg gas, and their mins can run out quite easily in a hardcore late game. scan all over their base, see where they have low anti-air defenses, cloak wraiths and send them in on a suicide run at the main. be careful though, if the counter has heavy guardians you will need wraiths, if you just sacrificed all of them on the wraith bomb it could be the end for you. so use it wisely.
after you have your 1 armor upgrade on rines, dont fear his choke. after you have your tanks, and alot of rax pumping rines, dont fear his ground, assault his choke, take him on, your agressiveness will tear a chunk out of him and your next army will be right there ready to go tear another chunk out of him
things to watch out for
these situations you can decide how to handle, ill offer some ideas though
mass drops - send rines to intercept, seige tanks around drop zone so units die as soon as they hit the ground, send wraiths to attack the ovies, turret up your base so they take hits as they move to the dropzone
muta bombs - already explained anti-muta bomb tactics. if you get muta bombed in late game and they manage to kill off your cc, COUNTER IMMEDIATELY because they will be very low in supply for their army
guardians - already explained anti-guardian tactics
plague - havent had anyone plague my wraiths yet, but its a viable option that gets overlooked. maybe target defilers 1st or bring in some sci vsls to irradiate guards/defilers
dark swarm - mix in fbats and more tanks
ensnare - if they ensnare your wraiths, just play alot more reserved, pull out earlier if you see hydras and ovies, dont attack as long, keep closer to your ground army
ultras - never seen it, i imagine rines would own them
mass mutas - just go mass rines. rines own the shit out of mutas, and bring in wraiths to help
mass zlings - setup a point to engage them and just let them filter into your rines/tanks. if hes consistently mass zlings, mix some fbats into the army
mass hydras - dont change anything, rines w/ some tanks own hydras
flanking - if you have good recon you'll be able to avoid this. dont be afraid to fall back
parasite - only had this done to me once, but it foiled my drop (had 4 dropships with 12 rines in each, but he was ready and so i had to go find a less effective location 4 the drop)
well, i think that about covers it, i'll upload some recent tvzs ive had from this league to show what i mean
might be a good idea to turn off vis of opponent so you can see when i scan, where i scan, and what decisions i make with the information available to me
rep1: scd6 g76 tvz brooklyn w.rep
shows harrassing his choke with rines, poor example of a tank push, an fbat drop, preventing a muta bomb, wraith bomb, holding my base, wraith micro vs guards, getting flanked, getting countered while attacking
rep2: scd6 g42 tvz clutch w.rep
shows harrassment of choke, fbat drop, proper tvz build (in case he doesnt choke you need to be fast), rine scouting where mutas would fly over while on way to bomb me, getting flanked, holding the counter, holding a delayed muta bomb, using wraith bomb, sending scvs out after having too much mins, knowing when to pull wraiths back and when to use them to attack
rep3: scd6 g37 tvz entity w.rep
proper build, poor example of choke harrassing, poor fbat drop, proper hold of tvz ground attack, good recon for stopping his expos, good wraith bomb,
rep4: scd6 g26 tvz bishop- w.rep
hardest tvz ive had all season (cept maybe the 3rd from when i played terje and he came up w/ new shit i hadnt seen b4) anyway, massively **** up the tank push (dont tank push like this, i did it poorly b/c i havent had to do it in forever since every1 chokes now) and then he gets the upper hand and takes over the entire map, drawing gas from 3 bases and going huge amts of guards. i get his main tho, and slowly over an hour and ten minutes we go back and forth and terran eventually proves to be better than z (suprise)
EDIT:
2 new z strats to add after playing terje tvz challenge
fast zlings - they get speeded zlings very fast, can be devastating if youre preparing for lategame. i won vs it b/c i was getting fbats for my fbat drop. fbats sort of own zlings
mutas/guards - only mutas, only guards, when facing a mixed army you may have 12-24 wraiths... not going to cut it vs z who is maxed on mutas and guards. your rines cant attack b/c guards own them, your wraiths cant attack b/c mutas own them. obviously i lost to this strat (see tvz challenge for the rep) however, after considering it longer, ive decided you must use vessels with irradiate. that or hold out till youve maxed your ownself on wraiths (a few tanks wouldnt hurt in case of counter. anyway, ima re him tomorrow, we'll see what it yields.
Thx all
