The streets of Azeroth are going to be paved with gold in time for the next patch. In an effort to combat the rising number of gold farmers plaguing their servers as well as **** every last penny from their loyal subscribers, Blizzard will soon be offering gold and high powered epic items for direct sale in game. Items purchased will then be billed directly to the player’s credit card on file.
The first news of this was leaked in a blue posting on a topic that was quickly deleted, likely because of the sensitive nature of the information. Subsequent leaks from several Gms and other Blizzard employees have confirmed that the blue post was true, but that the poster wasn’t authorized to give out that information. Disciplinary action has reportedly taken place, upsetting several Blizzard employees who were then willing to come forward and discuss the new patch at length.
DGN was able to obtain this screencap of the original forum post before it was deleted. Blizzard is reportedly holding off on an "official" announcement until the system is added to the patch notes. (Image has been cropped down a bit to fit in the article properly.)
Additionally, new goblin NPCs have shown up in several goblin cities. Also, “Item Cards,” similar to subscription cards and presumably geared towards players who don’t pay for the game with their credit card, have accidentally been put on the shelf at several retailers around the country. In all instances the cards were soon pulled when the retailers realized the mistake.
Gamers have already proven that they’re willing to pay a little extra money to get an edge in their game of choice. Paying for maps that would soon be free to download in Halo 2, buying flashy items in Oblivion, or getting an edge in Everquest, gamers have shown time and again that if you market it, they will buy. Blizzard is hoping this new system in Warcraft will continue the time-honored tradition of bleeding gamers repeatedly for a product they’ve already purchased.
In addition to billing customer’s cards directly, Blizzard will also be launching its own credit card company geared specifically towards Warcraft gamers. The only requirement for a Blizzard credit card will be a pulse and the minimum age limit of 18, and will be offered to players regardless of credit history, circumventing problems Blizzard has had in the past with players who maxed out their credit cards in order to spend more time in the game and were unable to get approved for a new one due to poor credit.
Analysts are hailing this as a brilliant move on Blizzard’s part. Direct sale of gold will allow them to undercut all other gold farming operations on the market. Traditional goldfarmers were able to operate because of the low overhead that foreign labor provided, but will likely be unable to compete with Blizzard, who will simply create the money out of thin air as it is purchased.
The direct sale of items is also expected to finally quiet down casual gamers, otherwise known as “people who have a life.” The casual market has long felt left out when they get to end-game content because they’re too busy working regular jobs and having meaningful relationships outside of Elwynn forest to spend 20-40 hours a week raiding for high end items. The new system will allow them to spend money earned on the job for items that are comparable to what they would get from raiding.
Neutral merchants will be added to all of the goblin towns and capital cities in an effort to provide easy access for everyone. The item levels will range from 10 at the lowest to whatever the high end dungeon sets are currently at. The goblin merchant interface will work much like the auction house, with players able to filter out items by level, quality, and stats to find the item perfect for their character and their price range.
Blizzard assured players that the prices for the items would be reasonable for the quality, and also said that they would be raising the prices of all NPC-purchased items in the game by 40% in anticipation of the rampant inflation expected once the gold buying system goes live. Blizzard has also promised that other direct-purchase items such as faster mounts and new class abilities would become available if the system proves popular.
