Nippon Ichi's Special Reporting Division: Busty and Princely Reporters
Here are two members of the staff in Nippon Ichi's PlayStation Vita adventure game, Special Reporting Division:
fullku.jpg
fullst.jpg

The busty one to the left is Chika Murase, an announcer who appears on a variety of programs as the face of the station. Because of her appearance, in particular her chest of much abundance, she's known throughout the nation. She serves as the announcer for your show, Tokuhou.
fullvm.jpg
fullr.jpg

To the right is Akio Sasori, the producer of your show.
fulleog.jpg
fullyl.jpg

Both Chika and Akio are original characters. But Special Reporting Division also has crossover characters from Broccoli's Uta no Prince Sama series.
fullts.jpg

This crossover apparently came about in part because many of the people working on Special Reporting Division also worked on Uta no Prince Sama.

So what exactly do you do in Special Reporting Division? Nippon Ichi shared a few high level gameplay details today. You'll start by conducting your investigative reporting, taking pictures of the scene and also recording comments from related parties. Taking your materials back to the studio, you'll use touch controls to look through the data for important bits.

Eventually, you'll create a plan for the night's broadcast. The broadcast content will change considerably depending on your selections.

Famitsu.com introduces one of your AI party members, the lovely Nimue. She also plays a central part in the game's story.

Soul Sacrifice is a multiplayer action game. So what do you do if you feel like playing by yourself or (more likely) you just don't have any friends?

It turns out the game comes with a collection of AI-driven friends who will adventure with you. When playing the game's single player mode, you can bring two AI-driven party members out with you. They'll support you in battle, and although they move according to AI routines, you'll also have some influence on their actions.

Famitsu also has some magic and stage details. On the magic side are a defensive magic, which makes boulders gather together to form a defensive wall, and close range attack magic, an attack that makes use of giant bones.

The new stage is Andromeda Lake Side.

We previously detailed how the demons and monsters you fight are people who were turned to demon form after using too much magic. The game's stages are also meant to represent the desires of particular people turned to physical form.

Square Enix: “Please Wait for Final Fantasy X HD”
Square Enix’s curious reticence about remaking and remastering the much in demand Final Fantasy series continues, this time with the news that FFX fans will have to wait “a while longer.”
Square Enix’s lineariser-in-chief Toriyama touched upon the remake in a recent interview at the Taipei GDC (most of his other comments concerned Taiwan or his opinion of various events):
Let me take the opportunity to just ask you a few other things – first, how is the progress on the HD version of FFX?
Regarding the HD version, a variety of verification is required, so please wait a while longer.
Those hoping to experience the wonders of cloud saves in FFX will apparently have to wait a while longer.
The actual level of improvement the title will enjoy is still unclear – Toriyama previously said graphics would be “much better,” but it appears strictly to be intended as an HD remaster for the Vita and PS3 rather than anything more ambitious.
Bonus: Làm thì lề mề trong khi lại mở miệng bảo có thể sẽ sớm có cái thứ dở hơi FFXIII-3... Cái Versus bao năm rồi không tập trung vào làm mà đi làm toàn chuyện ruồi bu.

Left 4 Dead running on Vita via PlayStation Mobile is pretty Suite

The wizard digitalarts001 has made it possible to run Left 4 Dead with motion controls on the PS Vita, via remote desktop play and PlayStation Mobile (formerly "Suite"). The above video provides a magical demonstration of L4D on Vita, appearing to run smoothly even when motion controls are activated by the player pressing the left trigger and mumbling an incantation in broken Latin, we assume.

A remote desktop application is just one of the homebrew innovations we can expect from PlayStation Mobile, but it may be one of the most important: When players can make their own games suddenly appear on the Vita, Sony won't have to create any of its own titles. Now you're thinking with Portals, Sony. Speaking of....

Fate/stay night Possibly Announced for PlayStation Vita
Kadokawa Games is developing Fate/stay night Realta Nua for PlayStation Vita, according to leaked reports from the latest issue of New Type. The game features animation from Ufotable and will be released on November 29, priced ¥6,300.

Based off the name, this may be a port of the like-named PlayStation 2 title from 2007. As a bonus item, Kadokawa will include Tobidase! Trouble Hanafuda Douchuuki EX2, presumably a new version of a PSP game that was included with the PS2 version's first print edition.

We're still waiting for further details and confirmation.

Pre-Order Bonuses and Release Date for PlayStation All-Stars

7510794928_7b63100a3f_z.jpg

It’s only been a few weeks since E3, and the Internet has been set ablaze with anticipation for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale! We announced new fighters Nathan Drake and Big Daddy, and that PlayStation All-Stars will have a PlayStation Vita release when it launches later this year – so you’ll be able to take the battle with you on the go, or experience cross-platform matches against your friends whether you’re playing on PS3 or PS Vita.
We’ve been thrilled to hear all of the great responses to the news about the game so far, and have been reading all of your questions and comments on the blogs and forums. While we’ll get to answering all of them soon enough, today we’re going to be answering a couple of the more popular ones: “Why pre-order?” and “When is the game coming out?”
Aside from making sure you’ve got a copy on day one, pre-ordering will snag you an exclusive set of costumes for all of the characters in the game! Here are the outfits for the roster so far, but be sure to check back in with us later when we unveil them all.

We’ve revealed eight characters already, but you’ll have to wait until our announcement later today to see who else will be in the ring. We will be unveiling two new characters during our Exhibition Presentation at EVO in Las Vegas this evening at 6:00pm PST. So if you’re in town for the tournament, stop by and check us out or tune in to the PS.Blog for more information.
When the game launches, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to unlock multiple costumes for each character, but these exclusive costumes will only be available if you pre-order. And yes, they’ll be available right when you start playing the game!
I’ll leave you with one last update: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be launching on October 23rd, 2012! We’ll have plenty more details on the game — including pricing for both the PS3 and PS Vita versions — soon enough, but we wanted to give you a date to mark on your calendars. Be sure to head over to a participating retailer to reserve your copy today!

Chalking things up with Dokuro

23zes.jpg

You will believe a member of the undead can feel love in Game Arts and GungHo's inspiring platformer.
Can a representative of the undead ever find love and gain the affection of a radiant human princess in a gothic setting? That's the question Game Arts and GungHo poses in its upcoming 2D puzzle-laden platformer, Dokuro.

You play the title character, a diminutive undead skeleton, who has to lead a princess captured by the Dark Lord to her freedom. Players will need to go through the different sections of the impossibly-large castle, as they tax their brains with all sorts of puzzles.

Luckily, the skeleton has a few tricks of his own to guide the princess from point A to B. You can make the skeleton double-jump to reach high places, and move like the wind to trigger switches. He also has a club he can use to stun and knock enemies away, but doesn't hurt them in the slightest.

Comment on this videoWatch this video in High Def
The puzzles we saw involved moving targets In one stage, we needed to light up a powder keg by using a nearby fire demon. Because it was jumping around, we had to time our swing so that it landed close to the keg.

The skeleton needs more than just a calcium-crafted club for defense; that's where the hero form comes into play. With either a double-tap on the front or rear touchpad, Dokuro transforms into a prince that can not only slash enemies to their deaths, but also carry the princess to bypass small ledges or other manageable obstacles. The potion meter on the right side of the screen displays how long you've got until you revert back to your bony form.

In addition, you have access with chalk powers; by selecting the color type of chalk with the left trigger, you can draw lines on the touch screen to alter the environment. Using a white chalk line connects severed ropes onto heavy objects so that they stay suspended, while using a red chalk lets you light up fuses to blow up powder kegs.

Someday my prince will come…
We played through five stages in our demo, with each stage consisting of ten segments and its own brain teasers. While the first stage was a tutorial about the game's controls and mechanics, we ran into a bit of trouble with some of the puzzles on the third stage and beyond. Some require you to lay out a makeshift bridge of boxes while clearing a path of beasties, while others required us to fly across the area using a blimp while capping off fire traps using crates.

Toro Inoue and Heihachi Mishima confirmed for PlayStation All-Stars

0.jpg

SuperBot Entertainment recently revealed that Toro Inoue and Heihachi Mishima will be in the Playstation All-Stars game.

Heihachi--article_image.jpg

Here's what they had to say about Heihachi Mishima:
"Hailing from the ever-popular Tekken series, the original mastermind behind the Mishima Zaibatsu joins the battle! Making his first appearance on the PSX in 1995, Heihachi is one of only five characters to appear in every iteration of Tekken thereafter, brawling his way through 17 years of King of Iron Fist tournaments. Heihachi fans will feel right at home with this newest interpretation. Familiar moves such as his Electric Wind God Fist and Twin Pistons are intact and as deadly as ever. He excels at close-range combat, overwhelming opponents with quick, powerful strikes. Heihachi’s combo potential ranks among the best in the roster, turning every encounter into a stylish martial arts exhibition. Though the battlefield has changed, Heihachi brings his signature fighting style and brutal attacks to PlayStation All-Stars!"

And here's what they said on the Sony cat also known as Toro Inoue:

Toro.jpg

"Toro Inoue, also known as the Sony Cat, has been a faithful mascot to Sony in Japan for over a decade! He has made appearances in numerous video games spanning several different Sony consoles and is a welcome addition to our roster. Though appearing to be simply a cute feline, the warrior within proves to be as formidable as the next. Toro brings a unique stance-based fighting style to PlayStation All-Stars, affording him several different sets of attacks to utilize in combat. He transitions seamlessly from a close-range fighter in his Justice form, to a ranged specialist in his Torobi form, to an effective wide-area controller in his Oni form. All the while, Toro’s fun-loving charm comes through in every action he performs. Be sure to check him out!"

Vita already has 4GB of Flash Memory Built-in

At the tail end of last year Sony released their PlayStation Vita, and it was duly torn down by iFixit and others. In due course we took it apart too, though we didn’t post it on our teardown blog.

New-Picture-300x186.png

Inside we found the usual set of wireless chips, motion sensors, and memory, but the key to the increased performance of the PS Vita is the Sony CXD5315GG processor, a quad- core ARM Cortex-A9 device with an embedded Imagination SGX543MP4+ quad-core GPU.
Above I said that we found memory, but actually the only discrete memory that we found on the motherboard was 4 GB of Toshiba flash; and Sony’s specification states that there is 512 MB (4 Gb) regular RAM, plus 128 MB (1 Gb) VRAM (video RAM). In a phone that would tell me that there is memory in a package-on-package (PoP) configuration, mobile SDRAM in the top part and the processor in the bottom part.
However, when we took the part off the board and did a set of x-rays, the side view proved me wrong – it’s a stack, and the close-up shows that there appear to be five dies in there, a thick die at the base, a thinner one immediately on top and three smaller die on top of that. The second die down could be a spacer, since there don’t seem to bond wires going to it.

New-Picture-1-300x123.png

This immediately led us to speculate – if the second die up is the VRAM, is it wide I/O DRAM, and is it using through-silicon vias (TSVs)? Time for a real cross-section to check that out, and almost predictably we were disappointed:

New-Picture-2-300x157.png

This type of face-to-face connection showed up back in 2006 in the original Sony PSP, and Toshiba had dubbed it “semi-embedded DRAM”, now they are calling it “Stacked Chip SoC”. The ball pitch is an impressive ~45 µm, almost as tight as TI’s copper pillars, but they are staggered to achieve 40-µm pitch.
So what are the five chips that are in the stack? At the base we have the processor chip; face to face with it is a Samsung 1-Gb wide I/O SDRAM; and the top three dies comprise two Samsung 2-Gb mobile DDR2 SDRAMs, separated by a spacer die, and conventionally wire-bonded. The base die is ~250 µm thick, and the others ~100 – 120 µm.
When we look at the die photos of the processor and the 1-Gb memory, we can see that they are purposely laid out for the stacked-chip configuration, since in the centres of both is an array of matching bond pads.

New-Picture-3-300x178.png

wide I/O SDRAM with bond pad arrays annotated

Close examination reveals that there are 1080 pads in two blocks of 540 (2 sub-blocks of 45 rows of 6 pads), so likely 2 x 512 bit I/O operation, possibly sub-divided into 4 x 128.

New-Picture-4-300x261.png

Last year at ISSCC Samsung described a similar wide I/O DRAM using TSVs [1], claiming a data bandwidth of 12.8 Gb/s, four times the bandwidth of an equivalent LPDDR2 part. I doubt that the authors expected their design to be in a volume consumer device before the end of the year, but that seems to be what happened!

New-Picture-3-300x183.jpg

This uses similar I/Os, but not the same as, the JEDEC wide I/O standard issued earlier this year (which calls for 50 rows of 6 pads in each block), and of course it predates it by about a year.

By combining the processor with the different memories in the same package in the Vita, Sony and Toshiba have produced one of the few true system-in-package (SiP) parts that we have seen. And I would call it 3D, even though industry convention is now restricting that term to TSV-based parts – so it’s not 3D, in our current argot.

In a way this device highlights the commercial barriers to introducing TSVs into the SiP world, since not only do the corresponding parts have to be designed to suit the I/Os, but at least for a two-stack the technology is already there; so the performance cost/benefit has to be critical enough to require TSVs for that third and more die. Admittedly the demands on mobile devices are increasing at an astounding pace, but it still seems a while before we’ll see TSVs in commercial devices. Time will tell!
