Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed roster won’t be the same on every platform

Sonic-All-Stars-Racing-Transformed.jpg

Not all versions of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will feature the same characters.

New comments from Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett indicate that there will be 29 characters in total across all of the games. But some versions will offer a roster in the “high 20s” while others will be in the “low 20s”.

Lycett said:

“The thing is, different people think of different things when you say ‘How many characters are in the game’.

“Are we talking about playable choices, drivers, vehicle forms, which platform are we talking about, what?

“Me, I go with actual playable choices on the character select. Over all the different platforms, this totals up to 29 actual playable choices. But that doesn’t mean that there are 29 playable choices in all platforms (in fact no single platform has all 29). Some drop down to the low 20′s, some instead have high 20′s.

“Why is this? Well some platforms have characters that are unique to that platform. I’m not going to say which, that’s part of the fun of the reveals! Some are SEGA characters, some are not. Don’t bother asking :p”

Rumor: PlayStation All-Stars characters, stages leaked

7074781.jpg

A Reddit user claims to have new character and stage details on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and is supporting it with image leaks. (And don’t worry. In case it wasn’t clear that this is a leak, he’s written “leak” all over the images for you.)

PSASBR-Leak_001-600x337.jpg

Characters shown above include:

Raiden (Metal Gear Solid)
Dante (DmC Devil May Cry)
Heihachi (Tekken, already confirmed)
Ratchet (Ratchet & Clank)

Sir Daniel Fortesque (Medievil)
Jak (Jak & Daxter, already confirmed)
Nariko (Heavenly Sword)
Cole MacGrath (inFAMOUS, already confirmed)
Evil Cole McGrath (inFAMOUS)
While I’m not so sure about the characters, considering the artwork doesn’t seem to share the same style, the leaked stages look much more legitimate. The Reddit user posted the following images alongside the bigger one above. Not shown below, but shown in the bigger image (but covered by “leak”) are stages based on Uncharted 3 and Ape Escape.

NHN has opened an official site for Picotto Knights, Gamearts' new free-to-play side scrolling online action title for PlayStation Vita. The site provides first screenshots, which you can see below, and additional details.

The background story involves the player downloading a game called "Picotto Knight" and being transported to Planet Pico, home of a mysterious life form known as Cocoroids. An apprentice knight named Picosuke asks you to help save the planet from the demo king.

You play as a Cocoroid. You can customize your character in various ways, and select from eight weapon types: blade, spear, axe, hammer, claw, chakram, rod and bowgun.

The game can be played in online multiplayer with four players teaming up, or you can play solo, teaming up with CPU-controlled versions of your friends' players. During online play, the game can be made to match you up with like-leveled players, or you can choose to play without level limits.

A first video of Picotto Knight will debut at Famitsu.com either tomorrow or the day after.

Soul Sacrifice Supports Online Multiplayer

While Soul Sacrifice has an AI controlled partner in single player mode, creator and Comcept CEO Keiji Inafune designed it as a multiplayer game.

"I recommend the multiplayer mode where you can play with your friends or girlfriend. Because that’s when the emotions come out and everyone can feel the sacrifice," Inafune said during an interview with Siliconera.

The good news is you can sacrifice for your friends even if you’re a thousand miles away. Soul Sacrifice supports online multiplayer, Famitsu magazine reports.

Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation Preview

120604_7pm_ACL_SC_SP_06_HD_NewOrleans_Stealth.jpg

[spoil]At the same Sony event where we sampled PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, I took a look at Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, the Assassin’s Creed spin-off title for the PS Vita from developer Ubisoft Sofia. And that was all I got, unfortunately: a look. Due to its shaky pre-alpha state, Richard Farrese, the game’s writer, preferred to tell me all about the game as he played through a short demo. I watched and listened.

First, he explained the setting: ”Louisiana, 18th century. The game starts in 1765. The French colony [New Orleans] is being handed over to the Spanish. It’s a really exciting time.”

Then Farrese introduced me to the game’s new main character: “So this is Aveline. She’s our protagonist, the first female assassin … I personally think it was about time for a female hero. When we did research of the time period we found that there were a lot of women that played important roles…. For our game, it was perfect. I think it was the best choice.” We’ll hear a little more about Aveline later.

Farrese went on and started the demo. “This mission takes place during the Louisiana Rebellion in ’68, three years after the Spanish take over. Since the game takes place over 12 years, there’s a lot more going on than what I’m going to show you…. You’re on your way to steal some gunpowder for the Spanish army. You see some citizens who are in trouble and you’re there to help them.”
Assassin s Creed 3 Liberation Screenshots 13389113548100 Assassins Creed III: Liberations head writer walks me through a demo

The French are toast.

As he approached two enemies from a rooftop he did a double air-assassination, a basic Assassin’s Creed move. Afterwards a mob of enemies surrounded him. ”Now I’m going to pause the game. This is a neat little thing called Chain Kill. As you play the game and you kill people, your meter goes up. And this basically tells you how many targets you can select when you use this particular ability. It allows you to pause the game, select targets — and here, this guy, there’s a pistol icon” — Farrese tapped a gun-shaped icon above an enemy’s head on the touchscreen — “this mean I’m going to shoot him. So, basically, you let Aveline do all the work for you.”

Basically, the Chain Kill is a very similar mechanic to the touchscreen controls of Uncharted: Golden Abyss. In that game you swipe the screen on certain platforms to make Nathan Drake traverse the landscape automatically. It takes the control away from the player and turns the game into a more passive experience. I typically want more control, not less. Farrese later told me that you can’t do Chain Kills using the Vita’s traditional face buttons. You gotta use the touchscreen. Hrmm.

Farrese continued: “The cool thing about that, every time you do a Chain Kill, the animation is different. It really feels cinematic. This is pre-alpha stuff, so it lacks polish. You can see glitches between cinematics and gameplay. This [demo] is almost two months old actually.”

“So now you meet your friend. This is one of my favorite characters. His name is Girard. Aveline meets up with an old friend, and an informant for the assassins. He tells you that not only do you have to steal the gunpowder, there’s a group of riders who have been arrested, so you also need to hurry and help them. He’s afraid they’re going to get shot.” From there Farrese continues with the basic Creed free-roaming and climbing. “We’re using the same engine as ACIII. The combat is quite fluid, but also when you navigate this allows us to jump through trees like this, kill a baddie –” as he talked he demonstrated all these moves on the Vita’s bright screen “– Of course anything around the environment, you can pick up. You can use a musket, aim and fire and drop it. It’s everything you’d expect of a real Assassin’s Creed game.”

“If you look at the weapons wheel, you have all these different weapons. They’re all unique to Aveline. She doesn’t use a tomahawk like Connor [in Assassin's Creed III], she has a machete. She has her own unique abilities. With the Vita we have different options.” One of those options is also a flintlock pistol. Aveline even has to reload it after every shot.

Graphics almost rival the PS3 counterpart.

As the demo went on, Aveline ended up commandeering a horse carriage. One that’s set on fire.

“We have to navigate through the street and hurry to the warehouse” — where gunpowder for the mission is held, Farrese explained — “I can navigate using the touchscreen. I can move faster when I tap or I can slow down the pace… I still have to hurry because this is a timed mission. This is not the final quality, but it gives you an idea of the navigation. It’s actually quite fluid.”

Of all the parts of the demo, this one worried me most. Shoehorned vehicle sections normally don’t mesh with the rest of the game and this doesn’t look any different so far. It looked sluggish, and the carriage was comically knocking into the buildings that framed the carriage’s narrow path. I hope they iron this out. Again, this was a pre-alpha build.

The demo then switched to a wine cellar area. Broken bottles leaked a ridiculous amount of alcohol into a knee-deep pool of purple in the middle of the floor. Aveline dispatched a bunch of bad guys and that was the end of the demo. The graphics and combat looked like they’re up to the usual Assassin’s Creed quality.

Farrese went back to the subject of Aveline. “What you need to know about Aveline … She’s a French woman fighting the Spanish, but it’s not — it’s what you see, but it’s really the assassins fighting the Templars.” Of course, Farrese referred to the overarching storyline of the Assassin’s Creed saga.

“Aveline is a child of mixed race. Her father was a French merchant who had a wife, a slave who he liberated and he had a child with. This was sort of an unofficial marriage. It wasn’t a custom but it was something that was quite common at the time. She was born and raised in New Orleans, so she knows that place, she’s an insider, but at the same time she’s sort of an outsider because she doesn’t quite fit in either world. She can’t be an aristocrat because of her African heritage, and she doesn’t fit with the, let’s say, slave population because she’s part-French. It makes her quite interesting.”

And where there’s New Orleans, there’s the bayou. “It’s a completely different feel,” Farrese described. “It’s a swamp. You navigate through trees, there’s alligators and different sorts of challenges there. And a good part of the main story takes place there as well. You go to the bayou at least a few times. We also have a really nice environment in Mexico. You visit there a couple of times. I can’t tell you too much about Mexico, but it’s a nice place. It’s absolutely gorgeous.”
120604 7pm ACL SC SP 07 HD NewOrleans Pursuit 1024x580 Assassins Creed III: Liberations head writer walks me through a demo

Aveline: half-French fence-hopper.

So, Liberation takes advantage of the Vita using the front touchscreen for Chain Kill and navigation of the carriage. The back touch pad, Farrese told me, will be used to pick pocket people. ”You follow a guy and you slide your finger like this,” he demonstrated, rubbing his finger on the back of the Vita. I didn’t get to see any theft in action, but it will be in there.

There will also be a unique multiplayer mode for the Vita, most likely different from the addicting hide-and-seek modes we’ve come to know from Brotherhood and Revelations. It will be a few months until we hear about Liberation‘s multiplayer. I predict some kind of tower defense/strategy mode that would be more fitting to the Vita as a portable platform.

It’s tough to say how well the game’s shaping up without playing it for myself. From what I can tell just by looking, it represents the stealth-action well. Environments and characters are detailed, and the familiar gameplay’s there. As I surmised back at Sony’s E3 conference this is a Vita game worth watching.

The final version of Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation will be out on October 30 of this year.[/spoil]

Picotto Knights Gameplay Details

244nx.jpg

NHN Japan and GungHo made official announcement today of Picotto Knights, the latest PlayStation Vita title from Dokuro and Ragnarok Odyssey developer Gamearts. Joining the announcement were some new screenshots, which you can see below.

4Gamer captured this picture of the game's control scheme at a press demo event that NHN held for the game today:

Square performs a weak attack. Press repeatedly to perform a combo. Triangle performs a strong attack. You can connect from a weak attack for a character specific action. Circle is guard, and X is jump. Character movement is through the analogue pad. L and R pressed with square, triangle, circle or x perform skills.

The game does have some touch controls. Skills can be triggered not just with the L/R triggers, but by tapping a skill icon on the screen. The rear touch pad can be used to rotate your character model in the home menu and, during gameplay, make a marker appear indicating the position of your character.

Producer Masato Dobashi spoke to the press at the event and revealed that GungHo first spoke with NHN about the game about one year ago. The game had already been planned for the Vita at the time.

As detailed yesterday, Picotto Knights is free to play, with revenues generated through item sales. The game has full online support, with four players teaming up for cooperative play. Solo players can draft their friends' characters for their battle party.

We mentioned an August release time frame yesterday, but NHN's announcement today listed the game as date TBA.

Sony: "Killer PS Vita Software Is Coming"

PS%2BVita%2BGames.png

SCE UK boss Fergal Gara has said that the killer unannounced PS Vita games are coming, more details inside........

Speaking MCV, Gara said: “We would love it to be selling more and we intend to make it sell more and help it sell a lot more. The feedback from many consumers who’ve got their hands on it is positive – so that’s a very good start.

“The key thing for the rest of the year is the key software drive for the console so as we look towards September, LittleBigPlanet, that really is taking the concept on another level because of the Vita functionality,” he said. “And of course the other key big third party IPs – Call of Duty, FIFA, Assassin’s Creed – will do tremendous things for the Vita.

“So it’s our job now to take that strength of software and give people more reasons to buy.”

Gara admitted Sony hasn’t quite “hit the spot with the killer software just yet,” but he has “every reason” to think it will happen in the next few months, and Sony will be working alongside the likes of Activision and Ubisoft to ensure there’s a reason the consumer will wish to add Vita to their collection.

Sega Planning Hatsune Miku Project Diva F Launch Event

Sega will send off Hatsune Miku Project Diva F with a pre-launch festival in Yokohama. The Summer's End 39 Festival event will be held on August 29 from 12:00 to 21:00 (the "39" in the name is a play on the word "Miku"). Attendees can look forward to live performances, carnival games, demos, and goods sales. Admission is free.

While the event is open to everyone, Sega will open a special "water stage area" to just 2,000 people. You can put your name down for access at the Miku official site.

In other Miku promotional news, Sony will be releasing a special Hatsune Miku walkman to commemorate the franchise's fifth anniversary. The walkman will be available in blue and black color variations, and in blue with speakers attached. Only 3,939 units of each variation will be produced.

The sequel to the cult hit 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors gets a cryptic website.
With Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward set to release this October, it seems that Aksys Games is finally starting to pull back the curtain on the upcoming visual-novel thriller. The game recently received a website, and despite the bare-bones appearance, it looks like the site will be updated as time goes on.
For those who don’t know, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward is the follow-up to the cult-hit 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, a visual novel/adventure game for the Nintendo DS. The sequel will feature full voice acting, and 3D models as opposed to the 2D sprites featured in its predecessor. With 24 endings to see, there will definitely be an incentive to replay for those who want to fully understand the story.
You can pick up Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward when it launches this October, for both the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.
