Vietnamese Metal is, evidently, somewhat like Vietnamese food. It seems OK until you realize it's made out of something profoundly wrong; with the food, it's dog (I am not one of those ignorant people who seems to be under the impression that anywhere east of London is 'that country where they eat dogs', I know this for a fact.), and with this album, it's the fact that the band are playing a completely different sort of music to what they purport to. Claiming to be Melodic Death/ Gothic Metal, Black Infinity first decide to have an album cover that looks like artwork for a Thrash Metal band that plays covers of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, and then actually play some sort of Deathcore with very cheesy and cliched 'Oriental' sounding parts as opposed to anything Gothic or truly Death Metal-inspired. I mean, you guys have heard of Chuck Schuldiner, no? Or you just assumed that Trivium is Death Metal?
While we still have the food analogy, I might also mention that in much the same way, the labels here are in English, but make no sense. Return For Dying? When Her Love On Fire? Since I have heard albums full of beautiful poetry in English from all over the world, Portugal, Taiwan, Japan, and even Halifax in England, we'll chalk that up to a lack of trying on the part of this band. Fair enough, they are writing in their second language, one which uses a different syntax (Vietnamese would just use "I tall" where English uses "I am tall"), but so are many other bands who have taken the trouble to discover those useful little words like 'is', 'are', and so on. It seems like a harsh criticism, but if you are writing in English, it is obvious you are trying for international fame, in which case you will have to make sure you get it at least readable if not original. I would expect the same of myself if I wanted to compose a letter in Vietnamese, or whatever.
After the plonking synths that introduce the opening track, you are introduced to very predictable guitar-slapping chords, with more synths that start to sound like the soundtrack to an old, crap horror movie, and an extremely unoriginal guitar solo. The keyboards on 666 Metal provide a constant, bland slab of ambience behind everything that happens on the album, and if anyone actually made the effort to do anything exciting it might have been ruined because of this. Luckily, no-one seems that bothered.
The vocals remain terrible throughout the album, reminding of the forced-sounding shouts of a Hardcore poser, while the guitars are overproduced and fail to do more than repeat a simple lead throughout the entirety of most of the songs. The Secret redeems things very slightly as the beginning reminds me of Kung Fu Hustle, one of my favourite movies, but once the band themselves get involved it all goes to hell. Paint Yourself All Black is just loud, offensive, Mallcore wank.
There is a seven-minute closer though. So, yeah, might be something to enjoy here, bands are always original with their epics, right? Wrong. It's not the 70s any more, and this sure isn't Child In Time. If you like arbitrary sounding, warbling female vocals, this might be for you, but otherwise it's just yet more of the same crap that has infested the entire album; boring predictable guitar playing, boring triggered drumming, and a shitload of synthesizers.
Asian Metal just seemed to be getting better and better this year, but unfortunately, while scenes in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan are beginning to produce some extremely talented bands worthy of international note, and Japan has long been home to some awesome Heavy Metal groups, Vietnam may take a while to catch up. Black Infinity are being held back by a lack of creativity and effort with their debut album. Not to mention a lack of talent. Should have mentioned that first. Not really worth buying. In fact, that sounds generous; this is the sort of album that will make you cry if you have wasted your money on it, and I wouldn't want to be responsible for that, so definitely don't buy it. Ever.
