You might know me from my "reasons to silence the fanboys" thread which the Xbots heavily flamed me for , so I decided i'd do a more structured argument without too much opinion and speculation. In this post i've decided not to include the nintendo Wii as I don't see it as the console that most hardcore gamers would opt for as their first choice it's primarily a family/casual gamers console, maybe i'm mistaken.
I believe that the XBOX 360 has little to no chance of succesfully beating the PS3 this generation maybe even soon this christmas, I predict that by december 08 the PS3 will have succesfully overtaken the XBOX360 possibly by a huge margin . And this is why I believe that you should by a PS3 this christmas.

PS3 GOING TO GET MUCH CHEAPER AS TIME PASSES.
According to my understanding some of the components used in the ps3 are currently used in and will be used in many other electronics in the future TV's,Phones,Camera's,Computers etc , high sales volume brings manufacturing costs down ( why exactly i'm not sure LOL possibly because the methods and technology used to make the components becomes more advance = to faster and cheaper product ...maybe ??) Ofcourse this will also work in favour of the XBOX 360 as all consoles get cheaper. But also keep in mind one of the biggest barriers holding back the PS3 IS IT'S PRICE , every time the PS3 has had a price cut it has witnessed huge % increase in sales(although this is true of many electronics that reduce in price , but considering the PS3 was still seen as overly expensive the price cuts wouldn't have had as significant an impact as it could have.
A cheaper PS3 doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it this christmas I'm saying this so that you know it'll apeal to the mass market = comercial success.
FULLY UTILISING THE XBOX 360 IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE PS3
*HDMI OUTPUT IS NOT INCLUDED IN SKU'S OTHER THAN ELITE
In the UK the PS3 40GB and the XBOX Elite 120GB both cost £299 ( I must admit with so much storage capacity that sounds like good value for money)
-XBOX live 12 montsh subscription £35
-Wifi £60 ( optional but much more convenient for gaming )
-HD-DVD Drive £115 ( For next gen HD-DVD)
(prices based on amazon.co.uk , one of the lowest possible prices for new hardware)
Fully utilised 360 costing between £450-£510 ($900-$1020), this would buy you a 60GB PS3 (£350) with Wi-Fi , Next Gen Blu Ray , Card Readers , HDMI , Full PS2 compatibility and Free PSN ( however this is dispute to wether XBOX live delivers a better quality service or not)
Considering that Sony sell PS3's at a loss you can guarantee that any money spent on a PS3 is money well spent.
XBOX 360 HAS A HIGH RATE OF FALIURE , VERY UNRELIABLE.
*MICROSOFT DENIED HARDWARE FALIURE AT FIRST
*THIS IS WILL ALSO BE MORE COSTLY THAN A PS3 AFTER THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRES.
33% hardware faliure indicates a poorly built console , that's 3.3 in 10 XBOX 360's failing , personaly i'd never buy a piece of hardware that I knew had a high chance of faliure when buying it , it's like getting a kidney transplant that you knew had a 1/3 chance of killing you ( well unless you had no other option you'd do it , but in gaming industry you got 3)
Considering that Microsoft have set $1bill (£500mill) asside for repairs it makes the purchase more reasonable , but with consoles that should have a 5-10 year lifespan we'll witness huge numbers of RROD'd XBOX 360's that don't qualify for the 3 year warranty , what is microsoft going to do then ? issue a 7 year warranty ?
*I BELIEVE THE HARDWARE FALIRE + OTHER FACTORS WILL LEAD TO MICROSFT BRAKING EVEN ON THE XBOX AGAIN LIKE LAST GEN
EVERY EXCLUSIVE ON THE XBOX 360 WILL BE ON THE PC AT SOME POINT
*PS3 BOASTING MANY KILLER EXCLUSIVES
the term XBOX 360 exclusive is innacurate it should be more like Microsoft exclusive considering that it'll be on a PC near your 6-12 months down the line with improved graphics and gameplay. This leads me to the question WHY buy something that will be availible on a open platform only improved(I guess getting microsoft exclusives earlier would be a reason but for £300 ? i'd willingy wait an extra 6 months per title if it saved me hundreds of pounds.
Wheras the PS3 has titles that probably will never apear on a computer screen ( MGS4 etc etc, you could bring up the emulator point but that would take a decade to run 100% full speed considering the complexity of the console , the PS2 hasn't even been fully emulated yet). So really the XBOX 360 is just a computer with a subscription to play multiplayer games.
THE XBOX 360 IS FAILING IN JAPAN TERRIBLY
* No AAA RPG's FOR THE 360 IN THE NEAR FUTURE
Yes the PS3 isn't jumping leaps and bounds but it still has so much potential with titles like Final Fantasy , MGS , Kingdom Hearts and the added connectivity it has with the quite succesfull PSP console . Japan plays a huge role in any consoles success and right now the Jap's aren't showing XBOX any love , it would take an absoloute miracl for the XBOX 360 to have any comercial success.
HD DVD likely to loose out Blu-Ray
*HD DVD Drive's bought for XBOX 360 will be useless
*Blu Ray Dye makes production of Blu Ray cheaper
Blu Ray is selling more than double the amount that HD DVD is on a world wide level and will sell more with the price drop of the PS3 the cheapest Blu Ray player ( although there is a $199 HD-DVD player which will definetley be competition for Blu-Ray , but it is limited in features) , with the PS3 being bought for multi reasons asside from it's game playing functionality Sony will still have a huge potential market to sell PS3 games to.
*MICHAEL BAY THREATENED NOT TO DO TRANSFORMERS 2 IF IT WAS GOING TO BE RELEASED ON HD-DVD ONLY , HE OBVIOUSLY SAW HUGE REVENUE POTENTIAL IN THE BLU-RAY.
HD-DVD PIRACY WILL COST MICROSOFT HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS
*DVD INCREDIBLY EASY TO PIRATE AT THE MOMENT
*BLU RAY FAR HARDER AND FAR MORE EXPENSIVE TO PIRATE.( I was reffering to PS3 games)
*IMPOSSIBLE TO RUN BACK-UPS ON THE PS3 @ THE MOMENT
Looking @ a popular torrent site I see that a XBOX 360 game named The Darkness is being downloaded by 60,000 people X $60.00 that they should have paid will = 3.6 Million in losses ( although considering not all of the people downloading the game may have bought or may still buy it , the losses may not be as great) But assuming each piracy will cost microsoft 1mil per game they are looking @ losses of at least 100Mill for every hundred games they release.
PS2 INSTALL BASE OF 120 MILL, RACE FAR FROM OVER
*XBOX 360 BASE MUCH MUCH SMALLER
*IF HISTORY IS ANYTHING TO GO BY DON'T BUY 360!!
Many PS2 owners have owned the PSX ( like myself ) and will probably opt for the PS3 (not because of fanboyism but for the sake of sticking to what you know is good for you) i've enjoyed the PSX,PS2 experience so far so why not buy a PS3 ?. Considering that around only 40 million consoles have been sold so far and there's potentialy around 170-200 million consoels to be sold this generation the race is far from over(this could work in or against sony's favour ofcourse)
DVD IS ARGUED TO BE A FUTILE FORMAT.
Yes you can compress games , and put that on to multiple DVDs but how pratical is it if every game becomes multi disc ( some one who owned 10 multi disk game could have anywhere between 20-60 discs IN THE FUTURE OF COURSE) with more content being put into games it's possible the DVD doesn't pass the test( this is one of the weaker points , but it's still a point.)
XBOX 720 POSSIBILITY
Microsoft are very unpredictable and could already have an XBOX 720 in development , some argue that MS would never betray them like that but then look @ the XBOX elite with HDMI output , imrpoved ventilation and cooling , things which should have been in the original xbox 360.
Although considering the huge R&D cost's an 720 is less likley , but then bill gates doesn't care about costs.
In conclusion i'll say that the PS3 is definetley a console designed for it's generations , good value for money , versatile ( can run linux on it too ) , boasting some pretty good titles ( Eye Of Judgement looking like a very hot title), PSP connectivity , Next Gen Blu Ray , PSN , Home and much more.
