It's been many months since we first heard about this PlayStation SDK, which entered closed beta for a chosen few back in November. Now we're told the open beta will arrive in April, allowing any interested developer to create content for the PS Suite, which will ultimately be accessible to all PlayStation-certified Android smartphones and tablets as well as the PS Vita. This beta of the SDK will be free of charge, while the official version will come "later this year" and require a $99 annual subscription in return for allowing devs to make their wares commercially available on Sony's platform. This should herald good times for users too: People still have to go to crazy lengths just to access homebrew on their Sony handheld.

Sony Computer Entertainment to Expand PlayStation®Suite by Further Strengthening Support for Content Development
Open Beta Version of SDK to be Released in April, Official Version to be Released Later This Year
TOKYO, March 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that it will release the open beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK*(1) to content developers in April 2012 and the official version later this year. Through the introduction of these SDKs, SCE will offer a more streamlined content development environment for content developers - from large game development companies to small, independent shops - and further expand the world of PlayStation® to open operating system based portable devices.
In November 2011, SCE released the closed beta version of PlayStation®Suite SDK to limited content developers in Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. The upcoming open beta version incorporates their feedback and will dramatically enhance convenience and efficiency of the content development environment. The phased rollout of the open beta version will start in April 2012 free of charge and expand target countries beyond Japan, United States and the United Kingdom. Developers will also be able to conduct performance verification of their content developed with the open beta version on PlayStation®Vita.
SCE will also release the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK at $99 US annually later this year, allowing content developers to have their content distributed through the PlayStation®Store*(2) on a commercial basis. Through the official version, content developers will also be able to seamlessly continue to develop content which was created with the open beta or the closed beta versions.
Furthermore, SCE will be adding content for PlayStation®Suite in Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Australia. The phased rollout of the update will start later this year. The phased rollout will include improving the PlayStation®Suite presence on PlayStation®Store for users who want to enjoy a variety of content with ease and convenience on their PlayStation™Certified devices. SCE will also deliver content created through the official version of PlayStation®Suite SDK after the necessary procedure is completed.
As of March 7, 2012, the line-up of PlayStation™Certified devices includes Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ acro, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ acro HD, Xperia™ S, Xperia™ ion*(3) from Sony Mobile Communications AB, and "Sony Tablet" S and "Sony Tablet" P from Sony Corporation. SCE will continue to further accelerate the expansion of PlayStation™Certified devices.
Through PlayStation®Suite, SCE will deploy various measures to support content developers in their business, and expand the PlayStation® entertainment experience on an open operating system.
*(1) Software Development Kit is a set of development tools and software libraries. Developers are able to obtain this SDK by signing a license agreement with SCE.
*(2) Users can download vast digital content including games through PlayStation Store for PS3, PSP, PS Vita and PS Certified devices.
*(3) Model name may vary by region.

It’s Game Developers Conference time once again, and while headlines are a bit light, it’s a great place to find game developers (of course). We’ll be bringing you videos, interviews, and conversations over the next several days, as well as a mega GDC Blogcast on Thursday.
The first game we got ahold of here at GDC is upcoming PS Vita musical platformer Sound Shapes. The game is best seen (and heard), so we present here Jason deGroot of Queasy Games. In this video, deGroot takes you on a tour through a never-before-seen level, as well as sharing the in-game tutorial, so you know exactly what you’ll be seeing when you load up Sound Shapes for the first time.
So when do you get to play Sound Shapes on your own personal Vita? The Queasy Games team doesn’t yet have a release date, but they confirmed that a pre-release demo is in the making.
Atlus has released an all-new, minute-and-a-half trailer for Persona 4: The Golden, its upcoming PlayStation Vita update of the PS2 hit RPG.
"It's something completely different that we're crafting," Irrational Games boss Ken Levine tells me as I press him for details on BioShock for the PlayStation Vita. Levine revealed during Sony's media briefing at E3 2011 (pictured) that the new handheld would be home to a unique experience set in the BioShock universe.
"It's not BioShock Infinite ported to the Vita," he reiterates.
Moments earlier, Levine highlighted a point of frustration that comes with making announcements. While happy to discuss BioShock Infinite's October 16 release date, his Twitter feed immediately filled with questions about the "next thing, or the 'Collector's Edition,' or the Vita game." And here I am, falling into the same trap as his Twitter followers -- asking new questions when old ones are answered.
When might we hear more about the portable experience? "Look," he says with an emerging laugh in his voice, "we're working on it. We're trying to figure that [announcement timing] out. I ideally wouldn't have talked about the Vita game when I did. It was understandably important that, you know, Sony wanted us to share that information."
"I think it's important that people know that a lot of big developers are very committed to the Vita and making that successful, but generally I like to go out with something to show." Levine says that he tries not to talk about the Vita game because he prefers to show people something, rather than talk about it. "I'd much rather come out with, 'Hey! Here it is.' Because what I describe is not really meaningful, it's what the experience is and what people perceive [from] the experience."
Levine says his frustrations about those seeking information regarding his company's projects are ultimately ... kind of silly. "That is such a stupid thing to complain about," he says.
"I could have run naked through E3 and nobody would have noticed. Like, 'Who the hell is that guy?'" he jokes, pointing to his years in obscurity before fans took notice of his team's work. "It's very easy to forget to be grateful for that attention and I try to remind myself how lucky I am, how lucky the team is, because people care about what we do."
Acquire is readying a series of download content for its ink-styled PlayStation Vita action title Sumioni. Ten stages will be released in late March and April, all free. The patch includes side scrolling stages, new boss battle stages, and more!
The announcement of the DLC was timed with today's release of the previously announced Ranking Mode and Gallery Mode update patch.
Former Capcom developer Keiji Inafune accidentally revealed at Game Developers Conference earlier today that he's working on a PlayStation Vita game. Sony confirmed that he's working on the platform via a video that was released as part of the PlayStation Vita Game Heaven video series today.
In the video, Inafune describes his new game as an "Inafune-like" game. He also describes it as an "amazing" game, but would not share specifics.
Based off Inafune's comments, it seems that Sony Computer Entertainment will be publishing the game.

Sony and Atlus released a nearly four minute video of Persona 4 The Golden today as part of Sony's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven video series. The video shows producer Katsura Hashino playing the game briefly, and also gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the development studio. Take a look below.
One of Sony's more mysterious PlayStation Vita announcements today was Discovery Project, a collaborative project with Kadokawa Games.
Discovery Project is... well, it's not entirely clear what it is. The project's teaser video seems to suggest that Vita owners will be working together to make Project Discovery. The video also mentions the involvement of animation houses Robot and Ufotable.
View the teaser video below, and access the teaser site here.
The Vita and PS3 versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 HD will share save data via "Trasfarring." But you won't have to swap your save files between the two systems directly.
Konami announced today that the game will support TUS, or "Title User Storage," which basically means sharing save data via the Cloud. If you save your data to the Cloud, you can access it directly on both systems without direct Wi-Fi Trasnfarring.

The Cloud support was part of a series of announcements for the game today. Konami shared a June 28 release date, and also announced how the game will use the systems' touch panel. Among the touch-enabled capabilities are zooming in with your binoculars, swapping weapons, and zooming in on particular areas of the screen during event scenes.
Be sure and visit this story for screens showing the new controls, and this story for a video introduction from the Kojima Productions staff, complete with a few bits of gameplay footage.
Gamearts released one of PlayStation Vita's early fan favorites in Ragnarok Odyssey. But they're not done with the system yet. In addition to patches and download content for Ragnarok, the studio revealed today that it is making at least two additional PlayStation Vita games.
Development team "PonKotz Troops" is developing "Dokuro" for the system. Development team "Team Gajet" is working on an unnamed new project. Both will be published by Gung-Ho.
You can see first teaser footage of the two titles around the 2:40 mark of this clip that Sony released as part of today's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven video series. The rest of the video shows Ragnarok Odyssey's online multipalyer patch.

Sony and Capcom released a four minute clip of Street Fighter x Tekken as part of last night's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven video rush. A first chance to see the Vita version in motion?
That's assistant producer Tomoaki Ayano. According to Ayano, because the game is in development, they can't show the game screen. Instead, he played the game with the back of the system to the camera, demonstrating either how to play the game with motion controls, or how to ensure that you get tazed at the train station.
Did the PlayStation Vita footage of Phantasy Star Online 2 look a bit rough to you? There's good reason for that!
In a blog post at the Phantasy Star official blog, producer Satoshi Sakai, who announced the game in Sony's PlayStation Vita Game Heaven video earlier today, said that the Vita version is only 10% complete. The footage shown in the video was just the development staff trying to put the game on Vita. It lacks Shaders, and has the PC's lowest "level 1" drawing specification. It's also unoptimized, with framerate issues.
Sakai assured that as they continue development and add Shaders and so-forth, the Vita version will approach the PC version's highest drawing level.
While the Vita version is clearly early, the decision to release the game on something other than the PC is not. Sakai said that the staff was thinking about releasing the game in some form on a home platform ("home platform" means consoles or portables) from the moment they decided to make PSO2 on PC. The reasoning behind this is that PSO was itself originally a home console title (PSO on Dreamcast). Also, the PSP Phantasy Star Portable games were popular.
As detailed in the video, the Vita and PC versions will share the same servers. Also, your character can be played on both systems. For this reason, the Vita version will be an online exclusive game, and its play data will be saved on the servers. Sakai noted that this is a great difference from past Phantasy Star Portable games, but remarked that you could say it's something they're able to try out because of the Vita.
The Vita version of Phantasy Star Online 2 will be released in 2013. Sakai assured that the PC version's 2012 release will not be delayed by the Vita version's development. The staff is first putting their full effort on getting the PC version ready to go and will then finalize the Vita version. A separate team is currently working on the Vita version in parallel with the PC version.
You might remember that Sakai had promised surprise news for March. Sakai confirmed that the Vita version of PSO2 was that surprise news. But there are more March surprises too, he teased.
