Xin hỏi:
Dưới 40 tuổi thì dùng U40 (Under).
Trên 40 tuổi thì dùng chữ gì nhỉ? Above?

I'd like to ask : What is the difference between Motion and Movement ?

Some say, Motion is a more scientific term and Movement is more general. Whilst others say, the only difference between these two words is "Popularity", for Motion is less common than Movement.

I was doing an exercise when this came up : At a single ... of his hand, the room fell silent. The choices are Motion and Movement. When I looked the words up in various dictionaries, I found the same sentence as an example for the use of the word Motion : At a single motion of his hand, the room fell silent.

My teacher told me that "motion" - in this case - is understood as "gesture", whilst "movement" is used when you describe something moving at a larger or more general scale. But I think Movement can be used in this sentence, too. It would be "At a single movement of his hand, the room fell silent".

So, am I right or am I wrong ?

Please help !
 
Terminology is always a challenge imo, i think your teacher's explanation about the usage of "motion" in that sentence is quite satisfied bc "movement" does not have the same meaning as "gesture", while "motion" does, clear enough.

For your question,how about stating your explanation of "movement" usage here, the meaning of "moving his hand" is somehow not "gesture"

Even in science, terminology agreement is arguable also, but we have equations and numbers which make it less arguable. The basis of language/meaning is never clear.

It is ''odd'' to say in common: with the single motion of his hand. I prefer ''movement'' in this case. Motion is used primely to describe law of motion, or an action of something unanimately.

But, the thing is, is it OK to use Movement too ? Is the meaning of this word suitable to fill the blank of the sentence "At a single ... of his hand, the room fell silent" ?

"Motion" is better when it comes to describing a "gesture", yes, but that doesn't mean it's the only word that can be used in this sentence. If, in general, Movement and Motion have no differences then what makes Motion the sole solution ? Or is it just my teacher's mistake ?

I don't think the latter is possible, though. But I do believe that "Movement" can be used too.
 
Yea when it comes to daily speaking, who would notice that little difference, movement makes sense too. But it is, as you said, an exercise, so we should follow the answer sheet.

Although i think the 2 words can be used interchangably, i would use "motion" for most of the time cuz the pronunciation is much simpler

Down to the core, there is an English grammar structure: "It is high time + somebody V2/ed something".
