Quả là một ngày buồn đối với chúng ta. Nintendo đã thông báo rằng CEO của họ, Satoru Iwata, đã qua đời vào tuổi 55 ngày 11/7 vì khối u ở ống mật. Vị chủ tịch đã được khuyên bỏ qua E3 2014 vì vấn đề sức khỏe và thực hiện một cuộc phẫu thuật để gỡ bỏ khối u vào năm đó, nhưng có lẽ chỉ như vậy vẫn là chưa đủ...

Sự ra đi của ông Satoru Iwata quá đột ngột khi mà chỉ vào ngày trước thôi, ông vẫn chủ trì cuộc họp hội đồng cổ đông của Nintendo và làm việc như bình thường. Một vị tướng đã ra đi ở cái tuổi 55, một cái tuổi còn sung sức. Đây là một mất mát lớn cho Nintendo.

Vào năm 2000, Iwata được bổ nhiệm vào vị trí lãnh đạo bộ phận kế hoạch của Nintendo. Khi Hiroshi Yamauchi, người đứng đầu công ty kể từ năm 1949 và về hưu vào ngày 31/5/2002, thì cũng ngay sau đó Iwata trở thành vị chủ tịch thứ 4 của công ty. Trước đó thì Iwata là nhân viên toàn thời gian cho Hal Laboratory (một trong các phòng nghiên cứu phát triển game của Nintendo). Sự nghiệp của Iwata gắn liền với 117 đầu game khác nhau của Nintendo. Ông cũng là một trong những người tham gia vào việc viết các game như Balloon Fight, EarthBound và Kirby. Pokémon Stadium cũng là một trong những sản phẩm mà Iwata làm ra sau khi ông được đọc những đoạn mã (code) gốc từ Pokémon Red & Green. Ông là một trong số ít những CEO nổi tiếng toàn thế giới có xuất thân từ công việc lập trình viên

Và Nintendo DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U sẽ là những minh chứng hùng hồn nhất cho sự đóng góp to lớn của Satoru Iwata cho nền công nghiệp game thế giới cũng như một cuộc cách mạng cả về giải trí lẫn khoa học kỹ thuật hiện đại mà ông cùng Nintendo là những người đi tiên phong

Talked to one of my co-workers today. Hadn't seen him in a few days, but he knew I was a gamer and mentioned his passing to me today. I acknowledged that I already knew and it was a great loss. Was also nice to see him, despite being a PC gamers, say nice words about him and that the industry lost such a great soul. Think as gamers, everyone kind of knows the ripples he has made within the industry. He also said it left this emptiness inside. It's amazing the lives Iwata-san has touched. I hope he is somewhere smiling, knowing that the world misses him so.

The crazy thing is even on Facebook the other day, Stan Lee posted about Iwata-san's passing. And later about the rainbow over Nintendo in Kyoto. I've seen it pop up in places and from folks I'd never have expected. It warms my heart, but renews my sadness a bit.

These funeral images today are so difficult to see. I think I'm at acceptance, relunctantly. But, I never feel like that hole will be filled. One day, as someone said earlier, I'd like to think we'll all get to meet him.

Here’s A Transcript Of Takeda’s Speech From Satoru Iwata’s Memorial Service

Genyo Takeda, Nintendo’s managing director and current co-representative director, shared a heart warming memorial address for Satoru Iwata at his funeral. Taker’s speech has been translated by Nintendo and the moving eulogy addresses Satoru Iwata’s family and the many employees throughout Nintendo.

“As we gather here today for a joint funeral with Nintendo Co., Ltd. and Mr. Iwata’s family, I would like to share my heartfelt condolences. President Iwata, allow me to call you Iwata-san, just as I always used to.”

“Iwata-san, you left us far too soon. Having just chaired our shareholders’ meeting the other day on June 26, the news of your sudden death has left all the employees overcome with a deep sorrow. The late Yamauchi-san passed the baton to you in naming you the president of Nintendo in 2002, and the two Senior Managing Directors of the company, Shigeru Miyamoto and I, have been assisting and working alongside you. Being rather short-tempered myself, the thing that I am most deeply struck by is that you were a true leader in every sense of the word, overflowing with compassion for people. You always maintained a two-way dialogue, even with the next generation of employees, or with much younger members of the development and marketing teams, or with employees outside of Japan whose different customs and cultures can make communication challenging — sometimes even admitting your own mistakes to them. You demonstrated this through your belief that people could eventually come to understand one another, and your strong conviction that the best way for us to grow is through patient communication, even if it took several times, a dozen times or even seemingly endless discussion.”

“You succeeded in planting the seed in employees’ hearts that, in order to solve an issue, there is a fundamental cycle whereby you make a hypothesis, execute the plan, see the result and then make adjustments, and by which you have caringly nurtured these seeds to sprout and mature into plants.”

“Until now, our successors and the younger generation would take a few first steps and then look back at you for guidance because they could not tell if they had chosen the right path. Today they cannot ask for your guidance anymore.”

“However, I am sure that they have already made the firm determination that they will continue on their own, making the hypothesis, executing the plan, seeing the results and reflecting on the results to improve and adjust by themselves.”

“In the face of your unbelievable passing it will surely take some time before we can emerge from this deep sorrow. Please know, however, that the seeds you have planted, and the plants that have sprouted will put forth small flowers as they bring smiles to the faces of people around the world, blossom into a grand flower bigger than even you, our leader, Iwata-san. Together with Miyamoto and others of our generation, we swear in our hearts that we will continue our efforts so that, someday, we can report and present to you the blossoming of these flowers.
