Best Original Game Mechanic: Ask some jaded game players (we're pretty sure you know at least a few), and they'll probably tell you that there's really nothing new in video games, and that game companies release the same old stuff in the same old genres every year. But we've noticed that every year, game developers try to push for innovation in gameplay in some way. This award covers the best new addition introduced to gameplay all year, and considering what a fantastic year it was for high-quality games, many of which are brand-new starts to brand-new series and stories, there were quite a few new game mechanics that made the scene in 2007. Did the music-based gameplay elements of Def Jam Icon win? Or did the stylus drawing of Drawn to Life, the light-and-dark gameplay of Eternal Sonata, the card-shuffling of The Eye of Judgment, or the portals of Portal in The Orange Box take the prize?
Most Innovative Game: It's been said that there are only about a dozen stories in the world, all being constantly retold in one way or another. Thus, to be innovative, we must try to come up with new combinations of things or new ways to tell the tale. That was certainly the case in 2007, when we explored the portal shooting mechanic of The Orange Box, the melding of puzzle and fantasy role-playing game in Puzzle Quest, the fully stylus-based control scheme of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, the unusual hybrid gameplay of Crush, or the strategy-meets-team-based-shooter gameplay of World in Conflict.
