Closing Comments
Covenant of the Plume could be considered a mature counterpart to Square Enix's Final Fantasy Tactics A2. This is a polished SRPG that stands out from the crowd thanks to some unique battle mechanics. The enemy AI feels a little lazy at times, but the game still provides a nice challenge. The real draws here are the high-minded script and team-up attacks. There are already a bunch of great turn-based strategy games on the DS, but you should make room for another one.
8.5 Presentation
A great translation from the Japanese script results in one of the most mature and intelligent stories we've experienced on the DS.
7.5 Graphics
Covenant of the Plume looks nice, but it's not on the same level as Final Fantasy Tactics A2.
8.0 Sound
Lots of great chatter brings these characters to life. The orchestral score doesn't offend but isn't very memorable.
8.5 Gameplay
Lots of interesting innovations make Covenant stand out in the crowded SRPG genre. Some lazy enemy AI is questionable, though.
7.5 Lasting Appeal
A bit shorter than other games in the genre, but multiple play throughs are encouraged with several possible endings.

But maybe the most intriguing battle mechanic is the titular Plume that players gain early on. It can be used to imbue an ally with god-like powers, making them pretty much invincible for the duration of one battle. When that battle is over, though, the ally is sacrificed, and they're gone for good. Using this ability will affect the ending you receive.
