The continued success of the EA and Square ventures in the US and Japan (I'm going back to the PSone here) and the capital infusion from Sony was more than enough to get Square back on track after the film (look it up if you don't believe me, they were back in the black by FY2002).
Suzuki is completely right, the merger was an asinine idea headed up and orchestrated by completely incompetent idiots, notably Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum at Enix, Fukushima and Honda, and of course, Wada.
Enix desperately wanted to piggy back Square for US penetration, Wada was an absolute idiot who despised Sakaguchi and was terrified of the backlash from the film, and together they instituted horrendous development reforms and linear focused brand reliances that were so laughably short sighted it amazes me these men have jobs.

Tetsuya Nomura: It’s been 21 years since he joined the company.
Because of the severe winter, he’s been taking care not to catch a cold. He’s looking forward for Spring to come since it’s warmer.

Japan’s Square Enix, a major video game publisher that just published a reboot of Tomb Raider, announced a big restructuring today. And GamesBeat has learned that the company has sold off its portfolio of free-to-play games to Sleepy Giant Entertainment, a startup with a considerable amount of funding.
Sleepy Giant raised $100 million from TPG Capital, the private equity firm run by financiers David Bonderman and James Coulter, and Evolution Media Capital. It’s not clear what titles Square Enix has sold, but it evidently has lost its appetite for launching the free-to-play titles on its own. Square Enix is a major publisher of hardcore games such as the Final Fantasy series.
The companies have not announced any deal yet. We’ve queried Sleepy Giant for a comment. A spokesman for Square Enix said, “We don’t comment on any details for external development deals.” But multiple sources familiar with the matter confirmed that Sleepy Giant has picked up four unannounced Square Enix games.
Meanwhile, Square Enix formally announced on Monday evening (U.S. time) that its digital entertainment business will fall substantially below revenue expectations due to slow sales of major console games in North America and Europe. The company said it is “also experiencing sluggish performance of its arcade machine business.”
Wow, chỉ trong 1 tháng thôi mà
