The Chinese Ministry of Culture has just announced they are forcing NetEase (China's World of Warcraft Publisher) to stop all new registrations and continue to completely shut down all servers. According to the Chinese Ministry this is because NetEase violated a key agreement while the game was still under review. This officially may be the end of WoW in China.
From the report from the Chinese Ministry it was a violation for NetEase to begin charging players for game time. NetEase was only allowed to let players play in the servers for free so they may recover some of the lost data from the wipe they received. But NetEase decided to disregard this agreement and began accepting payments for the game on September 19th.
I for one think this is entirely NetEase's fault. Why oh why would you start charging people when you are not supposed to? Sounds like NetEase got a bit greedy in this scenario or it just maybe they were starting to feel the cash strain since they paid an amazing amount of money for the WoW license. Either way this is an unfortunate loss for Chinese players.
For now though, Chinese players are reporting they are still able to log into servers and play normally. But is this a wise choice for NetEase once again, allowing players to continue to play even though they have been told to shut down servers?
